Being newly divorced I’m realizing my grocery shopping habits are at times disjointed.

Are you a list follower? Or do you wing it?

List in my head so I always forget something. Or wife will text me a list of stuff to grab so I keep having to check it to make sure I don't forget a key item.

List for basic items. Otherwise grab things that look good.

I have a list. I buy the items off the list, and then I leave. I do not buy anything else.

The only exception to this is if I have one of my kids along to help out. In that case, they're allowed to pick out one item they want as payment for their help.

I goto the same grocery every time and I have a mental list . I take the same path through the store and rarely forget anything.

I buy the same things every week, I do make a list of non grocery items that I don't buy weekly like trash bags, zip locks, soaps, etc.

I do the same, but I forget stuff.

Both. I have a list of essentials I need for meals. But then I like to browse, if they have some fresh breads I might grab them. Or a case of sodas or whatever Im in the mood for. Only tip is don't go to the store hungry.... I always come home with shit food, 20 bags of chips, pizza rolls, microwave burritos, sandwich meat, 20 bags of candy. Then I eat and go fuck.... I really don't want any of that.

By sections

I have a good idea in each section but if I see something interesting it goes in the cart

Check the ads for deals , then cherry pick . Plus the wife always knows which stores have the best normal day prices on items .
We shop , HyVee , Jewel , Fairway , Target , Super wallyworld , Fresh Thyme and Sams .

Buy on Walmart app. Do a car pick up and leave. Avoid spending money on random shit that catches me and my gfs eye and we don’t deal with the retards in there.

I didn’t vote because I do both.
I’ll go with a list and be awesome,  and… I’ll go and shop for the menu I’m making up as I go along.

I grocery shop with my wife each week.  We have a path, and a mental list.  Well, she does.  I lift things, and I get to push the cart. :)
I think I could probably hit a 90 percent accuracy rate by now if I had to go by myself.  When I was single I would wander around and find things that I would eat in the next 15 minutes, and maybe something for tomorrow's breakfast.  Not ideal.

I make a list on the fridge as the week goes on and I use the last of certain ingredients (or get close to running out). Either take a photo of it or just put it in my reminders in my phone before going to the store, that way I can eliminate items as I pick them up.

List is also in order by what is where in the store, so I'm not traipsing all over that shithole for an extra 30-40 minutes looking for everything... unless I'm just bored.

I don't need a list, never have. I keep a list of what I need in my head and stick to it. I'm in and out in 20 minutes.

I make a note in my phone. I add things as I run out or think about them. Go up and down the aisles in the most efficient pattern and then make a pass for all the cold stuff on the way out

List. Something not a available, substitute. See something that looks good, get it.

The list is just a framework.

List....but keep my eyes open to whatever grabs my attention. I like to cook, and sometimes ill invent a recipe as i shop. Ive planned entire multi-course meals wandering the produce section.

Both.  I do a big grocery shopping trip about every 4 weeks where I just grab things.  The small trips to the store in between the big trips are all based on what I have written down on a list I keep in the kitchen.

I go in knowing what I need, stroll down the appropriate isles, and grab the items, often without breaking stride.  It is when the store moves items and I cannot find what I need that frustrate the fuck out of me.  I've resorted to shopping at the local "general store"/gas station convenience store as this establishment does not move the location of items. The selection is not as good as a full sized grocery store in the "city", but it has a bit of everything, from cow ear tags, horseshoes, a kitchen sink, plumbing parts, motor oil, antifreeze, people food, dog food, cat food, horse food, cd movie rentals, ammo (not a great selection), etc.  For a building that is maybe 75 ft. by 75 ft., there is a lot of stuff in it.

ETA:  As to the poster above me who states that he is in-and-out in about 20 minutes, I was timed on a few occasions at the local store.  I had my stuff, and to the register in under one minute.  It usually, however, takes about two to three minutes to get to the register.  We have a very similar shopping strategy.

List. Get the sale items & the coupon items......

Not that hard.  People are lazy & wonder how they spend so much $$ in food.

I do all the grocery shopping and cooking for the family. I have a white board on the fridge for things I'm getting low on, and make up a menu for the coming week so I know what I need. I also sometimes just write fruit or veggies and get what looks good at the time, instead of a certain item.

A physical list? No. I generally grab stuff from a mental list, and stock up on some stuff depending on sale prices.

Usually just go around the outer edge of the store.  Meat, dairy, fruits and veggies.

I plan my meals and make a list with the ingredients I need. Occasionally grab some random things along the way but that’s pretty uncommon.

I have to have a list, and things get crossed off when they go into the cart; but I also will pickup a couple items not on the list.
Went shopping today, had to have oven cleaner on the list, almost never buy it because I rarely need it, but time to clean the oven. Same for the 13 gallon tall kitchen trash bags, I always get the big 80 count box so I am only buying a box once every 18 months. Just don't remember the rarely purchased items if they aren't on the list.

Most of "list" is in my head, as staples, but I buy a lot of "just thought of it" stuff.

My wife asks what I want from the store. I tell her like 3 things and she orders it to be delivered. I honestly don't remember the last time I was in a grocery store. Seriously might be two years.

I've never made a list. In and out in thirty minutes. I usually forget one or two things.

Wife always makes a list. Takes her over an hour. She usually forgets one or two things.

We often go with a list and buy five to ten times more than we need of that particular item.
Link Posted: 4/7/2022 10:41:53 PM EDT

I buy everything online and have it delivered so I don't waste anymore of my life in a store.

We'll make a list if there's stuff we need for a specific occasion, otherwise I just scroll down my list of frequently purchased items and add them as I see fit.

What ever is on sale is my list for the week.  Why buy anything over priced?

In my younger years it was roam and grab, but now at my age - always a list.
