While I realize there’s much debate on the 5.7’s defensive capability (and revolvers are not ideally suited to the caliber), question still is:
- how many rounds in, say, a J-frame? |
|
7.8mm at the base, about .30". I'd guess 6, but I don't know how much meat that cartridge needs between the chambers. Mind the gap, lol!
|
|
... same number as it takes monkeys to kick the dill seeds out of a pickle
|
|
Maybe 8, depends how big the cylinder and revolver is. But I think 8 is very doable. Of course the next question is why?

Better question is how thicc does the topstrap need to be. 50,000 psi is gonna flame-cut the shit out of it. I imagine the forcing cone is gonna get eaten pretty quick, too.

If Ruger chambered an SP101 with say 6 rounds of 5.7, I'd buy it for my wife tomorrow.

Yeah, and the X-frame's topstrap is a damn sight thicker than a J-frame's. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

For the same reason no one other than FN (until recently) has built regular 5.7 handguns.....manufactures don't think they can make money off of them. I'd love a revo in 5.7....but it would just be a range toy. |

I was talking with one of the reps at the S&W booth one year at NRAAM. I'd just picked up a 500 magnum so we started talking about it. He told me the reason they'd made the cylinder of the X frame 2 1/4" long was to be able to handle the cartridge length of the 5.56 cartridge. Now THAT would be a fun revolver. How many rounds? 8? Too bad they never made it.

As a general rule, round guns and bottleneck cartridges don't get along.

Quoted: The amount of energy generated by the 500/460 are stratospheres above the 5.7 and require a more rigid frame. The 5.7 may have higher chamber pressure, but it's less powerful than a 9mm. The frame won't need to be even close to the x-frame. Why hasn't someone developed a 5.7 revolver? Taurus teased a 223 revolver in their raging bull frame one year at SHOT. Extraction is difficult with bottlenecks in revolvers. 22 jet might be about it. The bfr pulls it off but mostly with lower pressure rounds in bottlenecks, and a single action is a different animal.
Replaceable inserts to guard against flame cutting might make it workable. Look at the way scandium frames like the 325/27/29 do. |

Are you counting the rounds you can drop in the barrel? If so then 2,4,6 or longer barrel?
|

when I first read about a ruger 5.7 was hoping for a single action revolver.

Quoted: The 1st World War. Ordnance had standardized on the .45 ACP for handguns, but there weren't enough 1911s to arm the AEF. So they contracted w/ S&W & Colt to build the M1917 revolver that used half-moon clips. S&W updated their model after the 2nd WW, and it's still sold as the Model 625 in stainless steel. View Quote |

I want to see a longer-barrelled LCR in it. I'm guessing 7 rounds in a j-frame size frame.
