Here is a live cam on the ESB that is working:
Link Looks like most of the affected area is off camera to the west side, though. ***EDIT***: The camera view just shifted westward in two different views, which I've never seen before, so maybe it's been moved to view the blacked out area. |

Power outages hit parts of Manhattan sending subway stations, stores into darkness
Gen X/Y/Z/millennial? author "A manhole fire caused extensive power outages across Manhattan’s west side early Saturday evening, plunging subway stations, Broadway theaters and department stores in the heart of the Big Apple into darkness on the 42nd anniversary — nearly to the hour–of the 1977 blackout..." Wait. What? |
|
It's times like these that I'm glad I live on the outskirts of a very small town. Power goes out and I'm not worried about people trying to fucking rob me or potentially murder me.

I was in NY for the 2003 blackout. We were in town for a wedding, landed at JFK right as the power went off.
People were pretty well behaved, most treated it like a giant party. Hotel we were staying in turned into a giant tailgate party, everybody hanging out in/around their cars drinking. ETA: I wouldn't want to experience a days long outage there, I am sure things would have gotten sporty. |

At least it's Manhattan any other borough and it would be chaos , looting and well I would be in fear.
Edit. I just read it's on the west side. That's the extremely affluent side. Nothing to worry about there. |

I just heard they had to cancel Hamilton tonight! This is awful!

I love the media coverage...
“It’s pandemonium! Look at this video!” *cuts to video of people milling around peacefully* “As we said, people are in a panic!” “Look! An ambulance!” *show video of ambulance in no hurry* |

Fixed. But seriously, power goes out everywhere now and then. It's not a big deal in the country unless it lasts a long time, but I guess the cities descend into chaos within hours. View Quote You know there are a million kids standing in front of open refrigerator doors right now trying to decide what they want out of there.... |

When the power goes out where I live it rarely...if ever... makes the local news
yet we gotta here about it for a 30 minute segment on national news whenever power goes out in NYC or Commifornia. I really don't care that much! |

A witness on the borough's Upper West Side reported hearing an explosion at about 7pm and the lights going out after that.
A New York City Fire Department spokesman said the cause of the outage, which has left 42,000 Con Edison customers without power, was being investigated. There are unconfirmed reports the cause is a transformer fire at 12th Ave. around W. 54th St. 'FDNY is operating at numerous stuck elevators throughout the West Side and subways,' the spokesman said. The outage comes on the anniversary of the 1977 New York City outage that left most of the city without power. More |

... was working in Manhattan during the big Northeast blackout of 2003. Luckily, it was a Friday and we got off work "on time" for once. Made it all the way up (26 floors) to my room just as it blacked out. My rudimentary survivalist skills saved the day for a young woman and her two small kids. She was near panic with no food whatsoever - so I robbed the maids goody stash for stocking rooms with that option. She would have kissed me. Many of the folks that hosted me had to walk miles home that night, many camped out in the office https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/eb/Map_of_North_America%2C_blackout_2003.svg/800px-Map_of_North_America%2C_blackout_2003.svg.png View Quote Mi map is wrong. |

I predict murder, rape, robbery, B&E and more rape.
For those that get their news from Fox let us all be thankful that this did happen when Shepard Smith aka Trump Hater was in the building. News says the blackout is from a fire, but somehow the media will tell us that it Trumps fault. |

Shit has to be bad for someone in AZ to tell us that Manhattan has no power. View Quote We are having monsoon storms here in AZ. We have no problem when the power goes out, usually walk out and say high to the neighbors, see if anyone needs anything. Then grilling for dinner or back inside for some fun card games with a our emergency/camping lanterns and candles. |
