Had one for a couple years, ended up selling it and getting the full length M1a.
They’re fun. Front sight is thick so shooting small things close is challenging. I’d recommend a red dot setup. Don’t make the thing what it’s not. You can get some good accurate loads, lighter bullets (110-125gr) tend to shoot better than mid (150gr) or heavy. (168gr+) Blasting 308 is expensive and the SOCOM 16 is a blasting rifle. |

I don't have one, but my son does. It's a great shooter. I've never shot it for groups, but it seems reasonably accurate to me. He has an Aimpoint on his.

I picked-up both of these (SOCOM & Scout) for $950 each a few years ago. I actually prefer the SOCOM.

Had one for years, it was a fun shooter. Sold it when I sold my place in the mountains in PA.
Bought another one when they were on sale at PSA a few months back. Haven't gotten it to the range yet. |

Not exactly the same, but I have been hankering for a .308 Garand Tanker. Something about a slick rifle with no magazine sticking out the bottom seems appealing.

You get a lot of stuff coming out of that ejection port. It's fun suppressed but it also beats the gun up a lot more. I don't run it that much suppressed. It's just fun to shoot unsuppressed and I have no problem with the RDS setup hitting steel plates out to 300 yards where I shoot. It's really a nice little 308 to have so to speak. And if you shop around you can still find magazines for around 25 bucks a piece new |

I have the SOCOM and the standard M1A. Love them both. Really love the SOCOM. 308 in that short package is very handy. Mine is in a GI fiberglass stock.

I owned the VLTOR version for a month. Sold it after the first range trip.
it was expensive to shoot, loud, hurt my teeth, and heavy as hell. Felt like most of the powder was going off as a flashbang instead of propellant. I came out even so it was worth it, but no hurry to ever do it again. |

My brother has one. He likes it. I shot an almost sub Moa group with it the day he was getting it sighted in.
I prefer my Tavor 7. |

Had this SOCOM16
 Attached FileTraded it in for the SIG716G2 Patrol (below) because I love my SIG716I (bottom) so much and wanted mag compatibility.  Attached FileHere is the 716I  Attached FileBoth are way more accurate without needing upgrades or modifications and constant maintenance to keep them accurate and I can swap mags, drums, lower receivers and most small parts between the two. I would never buy a M1A again as a Battle Rifle even though it is up to the task. It is an antiquated design IMO and though functional there are several better options. I always found it odd nobody ever really mentions just how hot that scout rail and barrel get during the rapid firing of a drum or a few mags.... I do plan on getting a nice wood stock M1A Standard to refinish and set up next to my Old Guard wall when once I get my office back. ETA... If you have the money and just want to fuck off with something different then fuck yes do it. it was a fun gun just not practical but can be modernized for the right coin. |

Nothing wrong with the M14 in semi. The criteria set by the mil made it try to do too many things. It was set up failure and at a critical time between weapon designs and doctrine. Historically, it was vanilla. Fixed the Garands limitations but not innovative enough post Vietnam. |
