I often liked his posts. Well-written and he was very knowledgeable, especially in certain areas, and sometimes was even insightful. His problem, IMO, is his temper. Took very little to set him off, and it's what got him banned/suspended more than once. Heck, he put me on ignore for a few months because I disagreed with him on some sort of political topic. But his posts remained very informative. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Quoted: Yeah, well he spent a couple pages and a few IMs one time arguing with me about a classified program which was my daily job for 3 years, and of which he clearly had no clue. It’s impossible to prove him wrong without violating your NDA. He knew a shit ton about military history and the whole "he just quoted Wikipedia" and "posted wall of text" is just laziness for those who didn't want more than a bumper sticker to validate their talking points His problem, IMO, is his temper. Took very little to set him off, and it's what got him banned/suspended more than once. Heck, he put me on ignore for a few months because I disagreed with him on some sort of political topic. Sometimes you just have to have a thick skin, laugh at some the nonsense that goes on around here and learn what you can from those that are worth listening to. Sylvan is one of those guys worth reading. |

I miss steinhab and pre-2016 Sylvan. From the primaries onward he wasn't the same sort of poster. dport and Lwilde were cool to have around. I would say I miss paris-dakar most of all. Great poster. Not sure why he stopped coming around. I seriously doubt that he was banned. Fatbert was decent, too. Not sure if he was banned or stopped posting. Retired USN officer IIRC. Not sure what happened to him. Posts rate reduced to a trickle and then he just stopped posting. |

Quoted: I think the quality of his posts on politics dropped shortly after Trump entered the primaries. Regarding the voting thing, I recall him saying he didn't really care about State and local politics and therefore didn't bother to vote in them; he only cared about politics at the Federal level. I try not to get attached to things anymore.
If people have a meltdown and nuke themselves, well, what can you do? I wish the obvious trolls were moderated a little more firmly but whatever. It doesn’t matter. Someday, the Left will get their AR-15 ban. Then this site will be the home of the formerly legal to own black rifle and the membership can talk about what they liked most about the AR-15s they used to own, but posting pictures will get a thread locked and the poster banned. Posting you still own one will result in a ban. Advocating they be used for the 2nd’s intended purpose will catch you a ban. ...but you can bet there will be a batch of gleeful little gremlin Lefties trolling GD and rubbing it in everyone’s face and they’ll probably be allowed to do that, but the member who stands up and says “you all destroyed this country and as enemies of liberty your rightful place is in the cold earth fading into the margins of history as fast as the worms can eat you,” that poster would get a warning and maybe a lock or ban depending on how many times he/she have squeaked. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just feeling tired tonight. Arf is great. I came for the guns and stayed for the crazy. Going to sleep now. |

Yea, after Steinhab was banned there immediately was a thread talking about it. The thread was literally full of people he argued with into submission who came out of the wood work to talk ill about him. I know that's usual GD pomp and circumstance but it was different with Steinhab because for the most part he actually did debate topics on their merit. Quoted: Sylvan would put considerably more effort into a response than "lol no", and could probably do it in fewer words and still make his point. View Quote Someone else on this page of this thread already paraphrased Sylvan's response to not voting in his state's recent primary as he wasn't interested in local or state politics. I think its pretty self evident, that a person who isn't interested in local or state politics, cant really claim expertise as a political commentator - especially in this day and age - when state and Federal politics are so intertwined (i.e. the Governor of AZ appointed the replacement to McCain's seat). |
