The engine. It makes for a shorter truck because you don’t have the nose sticking out in front

Makes sense to me. In the last two years I've bought 3 older pickups for personal use because I have come to the conclusion that I'd rather put some money into an older vehicle I think is cool then spend a years salary on a new one with good options package.

I think a lot of people are realizing they'd rather spend 15-20k on an older truck that's been gone over well mechanically with a good interior and "everything works" than 50k on a new one.

I'm sure small businesses, one man trade/service companies are coming to the same conclusion.

A lot of guys are pulling old trucks out of fields and fixing them to go on the road again because if a truck is a certain age, you don't have to have electronic logs.

Kewl....

Why did they fall out of favor?

Sitting on top of an engine with a short wheel base seems like a recipe for a bad back.....oh.....and collisions seem extra bad.

Also, don't forget to tie everything down inside the cab first when you have to work on the engine.

Different rules eventually allowed for longer trucks....and this ain't Europe.

Not a trucker....loved trucks.  Still research them.

Length restrictions were relaxed, which were (and still are) the primary reason for the existence of cabovers.

Fun fact, Biagi Bros ran 57’ dry vans using Pete 320 tractors, which was allowed under the 65’ overall max rule in California.

P.S. Companies got rid of them because of workers comp.

In the winter, or if you miss a step.......its a long way down!

Also in a collision, nothing out there between the driver and St. Peter except God's love.

Try it in a 1971 Mack cab over with a camelback leaf spring suspension, you'll piss blood at the end of the day.

I guess I was lucky, a new '88 Mack cabover with air suspension.  Still sucked.

I want a Ford COE so bad.

My dad drove trucks when I was like 5 and he would pick me up and take me back to the shop in this bad ass cab over. Never forget those days.

There's one that's always pulling grain that has a Detroit 2 stroke.

lol a 15-20 year old truck in the rust belt has already returned to the earth or too far along in the process to easily save.

I need to get a place in the south.

Wrong.

There are approved NYC surface street truck routes for 53 footers.  You just have to know where to get the NYC DOT (NOT NY State DOT) map that shows those routes.  Been into every borough of the city in a Freightliner condo dragging a 53 footer more than I care to remember using a map like this:

Try bobtailing one from  Scranton, PA to Gary, IN.  I needed to go to Gary to pick up a new truck and that old International needed to go be retired because Haliburton was buying every cabover they could lay hands on to send to Iraq for contractor convoy work.

I got to Gary in the evening and could not pick up m new truck until the following morning.  But the next morning when I went to the garage that old cabover had been cleaned, all company markings removed, the ECU reflashed to factory specs and it was parked ready for the driveaway company to stack with 3 other cabovers to take to the port.

I heard interesting stories about Haliburton drivers fighting to see who got to drive those old Schneider and JB Hunt cabovers when they showed up in Kuwait.  US-spec trucks with cold AC, air ride suspension, air-ride cabs and air ride seats versus spring-ride seat and suspension Volvos, Manns and DAFs with Euro AC systems must have been a big improvement.

And I heard the Hadjis couldn't wait to try out an RPG on the first condo cabovers they saw.  Supposedly the warhead would go through both cab walls and explode after passing through the opposite side of the cab.  Flimsy fiberglass and sheet aluminum cabs couldn't even offer enough resistance to set off the warheads.
