I'm friends with one of the pilots of the TWA Connie. He got hired by TWA at age 21 and was assigned the Connie FO position since he was TOO YOUNG to hold an FE ticket. Bastard! Awesome guy who knows more about aviation than the entire Purdue Faculty--seriously. The guy's a genius.

TC

P.S.--My picks would be the F-4 for fun and the G650 for profit.

Now that's a perfect example of being in the right place at the right time!  Definitely an aircraft that separates the pilots from the Aviators.  Must have been awesome to fly that thing.

The F-4 will always have a special place in my heart.  Watched a demo of one at the Battle Creek airshow a few years ago and those J79s shook the Earth.  A testament to how aircraft designers use to solve their problems by adding more thrust.

I'm not sure there is a pilot who's that "right".  Actually, it isn't so much who the pilot is, as where I'm sitting. I don't hate flying nearly so much if I can see out of the windshield.

I'd rather be in the right seat, or at least in the cockpit, with a pilot I didn't know from Adam's housecat, than in the back of a commercial airliner with Jesus Christ himself at the controls.

Agreed!

Several years ago I got a bad case of vertigo in the back of an MD80. Flying has never been the same since for me. I don't like being locked in the spam can with ZERO control over the situation. Have been jonesing to go up in my friend's King Air (right seat) just so I can learn to love flying again. I still love aircraft with all of my heart. But I don't like being locked in a cattle car any more.

Interesting. Never been around one of the TBMs. They sure look fast though.

Pretty sure the P-51D is in DCS, (some flight sim) alongside the A-10C. Too complicated for me, though, which is why I always preferred the MiG-21.

I know we're getting the F-14 in a few months.

I initially said B-58 or F-111.  Then I remembered seeing A-6s flying low over the cascades in the '80s and early '90s .  However, this is my final answer:

I've been watching a professional pilot's MIG-21 DCS videos on YouTube, and they really set the hook. The AK-47 of the skies..

My father flew S2s (last carrier radial), so it would be fun to fly one of those.

That's actually achievable, some flying in private hands, dozens fighting fires upgraded to turbo props.  More than 100 in bone yards.   Just need to win the lottery I guess.

If I could fly anything it'd probably be a P-40 Warhawk with the shark's mouth paint scheme. I'd get a proper leather flight jacket, leather headset thingamajig, white silk scarf, cigar to chew on, rubber ducky, and a Colt 1911. Then I'd just fuckin cruise around with the canopy rolled back. Periodically I'd find a grass runway to buzz, full throttle on the deck. As I fly by I'd be yeehawin' at the top of my lungs and shootin my 45 off in the air. I would only get gas at night at roadside gas stations. I'd for sure fly through the Grand Canyon below the rim just to piss off the libs. Nobody in their right mind would approach me. They know what would happen...

That's a tough one.

I'm tempted for an A-6 or F-14 since I've worked on both but a F4U Corsair is one of my favorites.

Done it. About thirty seconds after taking off, I look over and see the elliptical wing and the green fields and hedges going by underneath me, with the Merlin engine roaring away. Stunning experience.

F6F Helcat. My father built them at Grumman.

Grumman Albatross a close 2nd. Because I have my seaplane rating but have never flown anything bigger than a Cub on floats. And it's a Grumman!

I was just a little kid, maybe 10 years old.  My dad bought tickets for my us to ride in a tri-motor. $5 a ticket if I remember right, this would have been about 1970. I had ridden in an airliner and remember thinking how bare bones the tri-motor was. Cool experience though.
