View Quote I remember that. I was a senior in college and me and my roommates and a bunch of other people huddled around the TV to see this. Sometimes people played MTV in the background at parties but we usually did what we always did, blasted the stereo. MTV might have been in another room. |

Quoted: Had 4 TV channels via antenna while in the country when I was in High School. Went to Iowa for my Grandpa's funeral around that time. Stayed in a hotel. Turned on the TV and saw 4 Aussies jumping up and down in the dessert, dragging a stuffed koala on a rope. I thought...what the hell is this? Funny stuff. Later I asked my Dad what a vegemite sandwich was, and if Mom could make them for us. I still remember his face looking at me, wondering what the hell I was talking about. Didn't see MTV again until about 3 or 4 years later when in college. View Quote |

Quoted: This was mind blowing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHhD4PD75zY This was such a huge deal. In an age before the internet, you had to wait for it to come on to see it. It would be advertised and you would plan your evening around this video coming on. Think about this, Thriller is still *probably* the best selling album of all time. And the population was about half what it is today. Kids today dont really understand this level of "sensational" and how truly big it was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA And stuff like this....it fueled us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwrg0db_zY View Quote How could I forget Thriller!?!? After tech school was stationed overseas. Of course, this was prior to MTV being a global phenomena, but the European answer to this was video jukeboxes, and the stuff that was popularized over there. They also used to show videos at some of the clubs on big screens in between band sets, or when they didn't have a band. The Europ scene was somewhat different than things were back in the world. It left an impression. We ran for our lives once we got back to the states. |

Today is my daughter's 37th birthday and earlier we were talking about MTV and she remembers it being on all day at our house. This was her favorite video when it came out in 1988. It's also the ringtone for her. She would run to the tv and sway back and forth through the whole song. Getting nostalgic in here.

It was August of 1982 when MTV became available by our local cable provider. We didn’t have cable (couldn’t justify the cost) by my girfriend’s family had it. She called me up in the afternoon after I got home from band camp and said; “come over, you have got to see this!”. I road my bicycle 5 miles in the Florida heat & humidity to her house. We ended-up staying-up all night long watching the same videos over and over again. Her Mom was slightly annoyed I was still there at 2am but my girlfriend convinced her it was OK. We sat on the couch, ate a pizza and drank Coca-Cola all night. We would sneak a kiss now and then but we weren’t having sex (14 & 15). Besides, her Mom would pop into the living room every once in a while just to make sure the night stayed G-rated.
I didn’t know it at the time but that night would become one of the most treasured memories of my entire life. |

As posted above this one spawned a Miami Vice episode. Seems like there was an 18-month period there where every other song had some tie to the show. either it was used in the show or was a parody of some type.
Also, remember the pushback by the religious right when it first came on the air. It will lead our children straight to hell! Glenn Frey - Smuggler's Blues |

View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Definitely a Gen X'er. There was another music video show, where the VJ quipped, "See? See what you can do with a Xerox machine?" That was the FIRST thing that came to mind when I watched Silent Hill and saw all the naughty nurses. The younger audience members probably had no idea why I was chuckling. |
