So I picked up the barreled action and stock this afternoon, and did a little preliminary fitting.
First I made new boards for my wood vice out of some nice soft cedar and set up the stock in it. Added a support piece under the forend to hold that heavy, long barrel. Attached File Attached File Next I started trying to see how far into the stock I could get it to go. Turns out the trigger housing pocket was too tight, after relieving it a little, I was able to tap the tang in with a plastic hammer. Attached File So we had a starting point, I taped the barrel and started adding finger paint to see where it hit. Attached File |

Slow process, paint, tap into stock, remove, scrape, wash, rinse, repeat.
Can’t see it in the photo, but there is a guide screw in the recoil lug, making sure the action goes down in the right place. Attached File Attached File |

Made some blocks to hold the action when it’s on the bench tonight.
Attached File Attached File Trigger box is very tight, been relieving it bit by bit, pretty sure it’s pushing the whole action. Attached File Barrel is pushed to the right side of the channel. Attached File |

Game of patience, finding contact points and relieving them bit by bit, keeping everything tight.

Getting close on the inletting, working it down little by little. Barrel is very close , the recoil lug is starting to touch, have to do more on the action.

Attached File This^ photo of the gap shows how much more the action needs to drop down. Action screw turns in by finger, so alignment is looking good. We’re going to bed it in epoxy on pillars , pillars are here, waiting for the Devon Still a lot of inletting to do before bedding. |

Few week hiatus for scheduled hand surgery.
Attached File Very close to being ready to bed it, just needs a little more sanding. Have an issue with the stock manufacturing that will have to be felt with, more on that when I get time to take more photos. |

Time to update; Hand has healed enough to resume on the rifle build, so back to work I went.
As I worked the action in to the inletting, I was frustrated that the barrel kept moving away from one side of the channel. Finally I started taking some measurements and we figured out that the inletting ran at an angle within the stock. The stock maker doesn’t offer this stock inletting for this action, it’s a one off done as a favor. Obviously they didn’t get it jigged up perfectly, so a lot of wood had to be taken off one side to even things up, and I ended up with a much larger barrel channel than I wanted. But it are what it are. It’s what we have to work with. I finally got the action where I wanted it, so it’s time to get the shaping done before bedding it. Started by mounting the scope to figure out eye relief, comb height and adjustments. Attached File Plenty of room on the comb, and a lot of wood to remove to get the bolt function and be able to remove it. Attached File The base and rings seem about right, comb height works well, and we have good clearance. Attached File |
|
Had to relieve some wood for the magazine, clicks in and functioning now.

Now to do something about getting the bolt some room.
Can’t be scared! Attached File So my friend had spent a day with the rifle and scope trying it in different positions, and marked the comb with tape where we could not go changing the comb heights. So off to work with the saw to remove the bulk, die grinder to shape , then sandpaper. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Does the bolt come out now or do you have to remove the action from the stock first?

Quoted: Does the bolt come out now or do you have to remove the action from the stock first? View Quote Comes out. If you look at the photo with my fingers holding the cocking ring, you can see the bolt is tilting up and the lugs are clearing the action. We discussed doing that, but he determined he had enough eye relief and setback to cut the stock back enough to clear the bolt. |
|
Going to be an awesome rifle when done!!
Wish I had the skillset/tooling to do this. What mount are you using for the scope? Looking into mounting a scope on mine since my eyes are garbage for open sights. |
|
I thought you might cut a channel for the ring, but your way is probably more "correct".
|
|
Discussed cutting a channel , but my friend felt like since we had the room, he would rather just cut back the comb.
We may adjust the contours once he has a chance to play around with it. I’m going to encourage him to shoot it after bedding, prior to finishing, so we can make any changes to things that don’t work. |
|
Never really thought about that. That is an interesting idea we should consider..
Kind of late now, where were you a month ago? |
|
So there were some things about the stock I really didn’t like. Aside from the issue of being inletted off center, there was a pocket inletted for the bottom metal. It really showed there how off center everything is.
Attached File Attached File Just didn’t like it. So I talked my friend into letting me get rid of it. Attached File Attached File Attached File |
|
But now I don’t like the flat bottom contour. Time for some reshaping.
Attached File Just doesn’t look right. Attached File So I’m going to try to make the lines flow straight, and have the pistol grip flow out of the flat forend with a more rounded , contoured look. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Oh that's much, much better. My right hand was cramping looking at that original contour. Yours looks much more comfortable to grasp.

Attached File I think we’re almost there! I’m going to do some cleaning, probably give it to the owner tomorrow or Friday so he can clean it , mount the scope and install the trigger, and shoot it on Monday! Do some testing and barrel break in, if all is the way he wants and he’s happy, disassemble and make it pretty for final assembly. |
|
On the range for barrel break in!
Attached File Rifle go BOOM! Break in is tedious, and we’re only at 50 yards, but results are promising. |
