My best friend shot his ramrod downrange one sleep deprived morning trying to zero his muzzloader the day before the season.

Shit happens…

Tonight’s episode; Barrel re-polishing..

Picked up some scratches and dings during the barreling of the action and stock fitting.

Sadly, it’s too long to fit in the lathe now.

So hand finishing.

Went down to 240 to get the marks out, back up to 1500, then the buffer.

Just hunting tiny defects now, once I’m satisfied, I’ll move up to a lighter grit, then a final polish.

Shiny!

Meanwhile, my buddy is almost done clear coating the stock.

Once the last coat has hardened, it will get buffed with a polishing compound as well!

That's quite the custom showpiece.

That rifle's gonna be too pretty to shoot once you're finished. Nice job, very nice job.

I don't shoot XTC or F-Class and honestly I would suck if I did; I just don't have the mental discipline.  We only do shortened COF stuff around here.  I just see enough damage from cleaning barrels that I'm a believer in not doing it except when absolutely needed.  So sure, run a bore snake down the barrel of your field gun when you get done hunting to keep rust out but otherwise just let a gun's barrel foul in and shoot the thing.  We see plenty of guys chasing a wandering zero after they clean a barrel and it has to re-foul, also.  For some of these guns that are going to have a 1000-1500 round barrel life (belted magnum stuff) I can't imagine wasting 2/3 of those just trying to re-zero after a cleaning.

Maybe other guys have had completely different experience but that's mine.

A half-dozen patches and Hoppe's #9 every couple hundred rounds ain't gonna hurt anything, especially a medium capacity .30 cal.

Id like to shoot one without having to buy it first. I knew one or two people with them before I moved but not now.

Have to ask the owner , he’s got a grease for the trigger, don’t know if he does anything else.

Assembled tonight for some shooting this week, probably come apart one more time to deal with some spots in the clear coat he’s unhappy with..
