I think that its one among many, only because the Pakis and Arabs viewed the battle in Afghanistan in those greater terms (because of their own national narratives) and the Pakis and Arabs chose their local champions on Islamic grounds.

When you start with an assumption that "Islam" is the problem, and then try to do away with a cultural and religous identity that is rooted that deeply and associated with all that is good, holy, and righteos among a population, you don't get very far.  The Soviets started that way, repeating the disastrous experiences of teh Russian Empire.  They then got smart, quick.  Before long, it was Jihad vs. Jihad and the Soviets presented themselves as defenders of true Islam in propaganda.  Was it genuine?  Hell no.  Was it often brutal?  Hell yes.

I'd fundamentally agree. More than the "graveyard of Empires" meme, which is taken as an article of faith more completely than Transubstaniation among Catholics, Afghanistan is the football field where regional and international powers play. I think that's the central theory of Barnett's work on Afghanistan. Afghanistan is the distilled reflection of the international community and how it operates, viciously and dysfunctionally.

Was it effective?  I would trust the home grown vetting processes, internal security controls, and reliability of the Uzbek security forces over anything we half-ass have done in Afghanistan - and I rarely met one that was not a proud, self identified Muslim.

I think we consistently fail to understand what being Iraqi, Afghan or fill-in-the-blank-here means to people from these places, because the vast majority of people within the .gov/.mil just don't have any analog to concepts like clan, family, ethnicity in places where that identity is the only reason for being, because its the only thing that keeps you alive.

Divide and conquer is an old adage for a reason.  It works.  You don't divide a culture by attacking the only identity label they all share in common.

Not without a significant investment in time, resources and treasure. Much easier to do it the smart way via co-option of elites, and other mechanisms.

I thought 9/11 was the wake up call. ended up just being the nap that got us into this mess. The Generals and other officers tell the president and congress what needs to be done but the manhood ends at that. I believe a nuke in a major US city by the extremists would be the only thing loud enough to wake the American people up, a slap in the face i.e 9/11 didn't !!!

Not when half of the political class believes that America is what is wrong in the international community.

To paraphrase H.L. Menken "American Isolationism is the theory that the world knows it wants America out of its affairs, and then the world will get what it deserves, good and hard."

Our goal was never, and isn't to fix Afghanistan. Making a place much more difficult to stage global terror attacks and "fixing" it are two different things.

Under the Bama plan, the Taliban retrogrades into Pakistan, and returns in two years...which is what happened when we indeed when SOF heavy from 2001-2004.

The Biden strategy is what you're describing, except replace "B-52s" with "Predators."

It's not like we did not know where they were at and what they were doing.

I must be confused because I'm pretty sure that is what they have been doing all along. Come to Afgan to fignt for a bit flow back into Paki for some R&R, rearm and then come back and fight some more.

You are giving it two years? That place will be back in Taliban control in three months or less. You can bet your ass anyone in the Afgan .govt that could line their pockets has done so, the French/Swiss accounts are ready and their exit plan is in place.
View Quote

What are we going to bomb? We Tomahawk'ed the "terrorist training camps" in 1998, to negligable effect. There is no Taliban infrastructure to bomb, nuke, napalm or strafe to any effect. The station marked "Effects Based Operations" was 100 miles ago. We cannot bomb our way to any victory in the area.

You're going to kill the guys that the SF teams can get into contact with, but you're talking several hundred guys spread out over terrain the size and relief of Wyoming. Its whack a mole, and you're going to end up controlling historical NA territory, and not much else. That's if you're lucky, and mobilize more support to the Taliban than already exists among the Pashtuns.

So, the only thing we can do slowly get the Pakistanis to close their side of the border. Frankly, they weren't going to do it until they felt existentially threatened, and that occured in 2008. Once Swat showed what the Taliban in Pakistan was about, the Paks got moving against them. Of course, that was the time we had a change in leadership, and that change had "withdrawal" written all over it.

There is no doubt we made mistakes in Afghanistan, but we chose the operational level model we did for the reasons that it was the only one that would create any exploitable conditions, versus having a bunch of a SF guys rolling around in Gators.

OP thanks for your service, I am truly grateful for men and women like you who unselfishly serve. I too am fearful of what has to happen for this country to turn around. When our own gov. is persecuting Christians and repressing our constitutional rights something is very wrong. The media and the BHO admin. always go out of their way to accommodate muslims at the expense of Christians.

There will come a day when it will turn ugly and I fear that day will be sooner than a lot of people are willing to admit. Look what happened with GZ and the race mongers. We are nearing a tipping point of no return and I fear for the future my children will inherit. May God bless America again. We sure need it now.

Ah, that makes sense. Prior to mid 2010, besides the PRT and ADT, the only unit stationed in Afghanistan was a RSTA CAV troop, our troop was reinforcd by my unit, a platoon of MPs from the BSTB. Four platoons, one of which lived at the COP by the damn at Bande Sarde, that left effectively three maneuver platoons, not much for an entire province.

We were pulled out in May 2010 leaving no maneuver units, just the Polish PRT and the ADT, a brigade from the 101st came in around July or August I think.

I applaud your efforts, good sir, to inform the reading comprehension-impaired of the error of their ways, but I fear it is in vain.
