Is it even feasible to try and do this? Would like to get some optics on my standard 20" AR with a carry handle.
vmax84 Also, if you have a scope mounted on your carry handle AR, can u post a pic? Thanks again. |

It can be done and used to be done all the time. It puts the scope way high though. This is what you need.

It was a serious question.......I just wondered if it could be done since the carry would make the scope sit so high.

The movie Assault on Precinct 13 (1978) features a scoped A2.

Is there a particular scope mount you can recommend that gives the lowest "scope heighth"........not sure how to word that.
I realize the scope is going to sit a bit higher than normal, but is there a particular mount that keeps it as low as possible? vmax84 |
|
That's how we did it before the flat top was invented.
Takes a little getting used to but after a little practice it becomes second nature. Back in the day there were many makers of carry handle mounts. When one did not fit the carry handle well we would "glass bed" it in the handle. |

My 13 year old daughter wants to go deer hunting with me, and was just curious if this setup would work for her.

I've actually been issued a rifle like that in the 1980s. At the time they seemed to be cool, but even then they were hard to get a good site picture through. I did take a cheap BSA red dot one time and mounted it directly in front of the carry handle. All my AR15s are A2 and earlier in design. I never really felt the personal need to scope an AR15 or an M16 that way as it seemed to try to make this weapon system something it was not intended to be. |

Do you ever read the tech forums? You know. The ones we have here about AR15's and stuff.

I'm kinda starting to feel that way as well. It really isn't a deer rifle, but since I already have the rifle, it doesn't have any "kick" to speak of, thought I might see if I could make it into a deer rifle for her. Need to think about this a bit more. vmax84 |

Quick google images search: http://www.precisionscopesandoptics.com/files/3568848/uploaded/Carry%20Handle%20Weaver%20Base3.jpg I have this one. You absolutely NEED to the cheek comb pictured in some of the photos above, as anything remotely resembling a proper cheek weld is impossible without it. I would seriously consider just moving to a flat-top upper if what you need is a good optic-based AR platform. A stripped upper is cheap. |

It's been possible since the late 1950s. The carry handle was designed as a combination carrying handle/scope mount. |

You're going to want the extra tall rings so that you can rest your head on a tactical pillow taped to the stock.

Thanks. That's a great pic. vmax84 |

Not everybody is up to date on all the different AR15 configurations and accessories thereof. A question like this may seem 'trivial' to somebody experienced with the Ar15 platform, but to those that aren't its a completely valid question. IBNCAYSF.... (In Before Norcal and you seem familiar) ETA I think that's probably one of the best looking AR15's I've seen, simple and effective! |

damn youngins' LOL back when dinosaurs roamed the earth there was a thing called a cherokee cheekpeice ( yes I am aware they still exist ) Colt Delta Elite bitches http://i54.tinypic.com/2ppf1vb.jpg I will trade you a 5.45 VEPR k for it. Always wanted one of those. |

Why not just have her use the irons, no one really needs a scope to take a deer under 200 yards.
-it's simple -they're cheaper -no ergonomic fit issues |

If I had a scanner, I'd scan in a photo from 1998, had a scope on my M16A2 in Croatia/Kosovo. Used a bandage/field dressing, 100mph taped to the stock, to fix the cheek/chin weld issues.

Pretty sure ACOGs are designed to screw directly into the top a carry handle FWIW.

fxntime - my first AR was set up exactly the same way with the Tasco rubber armored 3 x 9 scope with integral rings and Colt marked cheekpiece.
