I’m halfway through and I like it ok, but DeNiro and Pacino would have been better used in other roles in this movie. It’s time to get a second string in if we’re going to have good mafia movies in the future.

Supporting this movie is the same thing as supporting DeNiro. I think DeNiro might be a transgender. He looks like a man but acts like he has a pussy? View Quote They both adamantly hate conservatives and most of what this board stands for. Fuck Robert Redford and Fuck Robert Deniro and anything and everything they. I'd rather give a $1 to a Seattle homless person. |

I finished it. It's ... odd. The de-aging is very distracting when slapped on an old man's body. DiNero walks, eats, poses, and talks like an old man, very stiff with a hunch, tight shoulders and small steps - then they try to put a face of a 30 year younger man on his face. I hope this de-aging CGI stays in 2019. Whomever decided to recolor everyone's eyes needed to be slapped senseless - I know Sheeran had blue eyes, not sapphire platinum. Looked like a character from the Avengers, not a mob movie. What was up with executing Germans in the Italian theatre of war? Was that a thing? Should have just been left as, "I did my fighting, I did my killing, that was my business, now I'm used to it..." sorta thing. Al Pacino did a great Hoffa. Pesci did some great acting and dialogue, you forget you were watching Pesci. It's a more mature role for him. It's just Goodfellas that's stretched out with bits and blaps of Godfather II. For being 3.5 hours, it sure doesn't dive deep into any subject matter other than Hoffa half way through. Only thing they put in about Kennedy was some campaigning and assassination news on T.V.? Bay of pigs with some truck driving and background news reports? Marty broke the cardinal rule - show, don't tell. 5/10. Watch it in two parts. View Quote |

I just saw it come up on Netflix
Probably end up watching it Off topic but another f Irish movie was “Black Mass” Johnny Depp played Whitey Bulger. That was an excellent movie |
|
I watched it and thought it was good. Moved fast for such a long movie
But the scene where he “beats” the grocery guy is just painful to watch. He’s old and fragile now. |

Goodfellas nostalgia made it interesting at first, but The CGI youthification gave me that uncanny valley feeling, and the movie could have easily lost an hour in editing.

Didn't much care for it... it was like a bunch of nursing home residents trying to recreate Goodfella's

I have no interest in wasting money on any Robert "Dementia" De Niro movie, but I might have made an exception if it got good reviews. Until I heard that it is another Martin Scorsese film. If you've seen one Scorsese film, you've seen them all. I've seen Good Fellas, Casino, and The Green Dragons (I believe Scorsese was Executive Producer) and all of these films have his stamp on them. They're unbelievable, loaded with ridiculously stupid acts of violence (like Green Dragons where the gang walks out of the courthouse into the alley in broad daylight and murders one of their members, seemingly oblivious/unconcerned about any witnesses or bystanders or police officers walking around and outside the court house). And Casino and Good Fellas seemed like the same movie because of all of the same actors playing the same characters over and over again. Like Joe Pesci playing a mad dog, psycho, out of control murderer in Casino. Then there's Joe Pesci playing a mad dog, psycho, out of control murderer in Good Fellas.

Is worth the 3+ hr sit. A great addition to America's Gangster film catalogue. Yes DeNiro sucks blah blah blah, most of them do these days. But the story is well told and thought provoking. View Quote J- |

Scorsese is a master at cinematic story telling and The Irishman is no exception. The movie does an excellent job of connecting the dots to the rise and fall of some of the most powerful political and mob figures of the 60s and 70s.
Pesci hits a freggin grand slam ! |

The digital makeup, as they called it, was pretty good, maybe less so early on. The glass cockpit in the plane was something they could have digitally replaced pretty easily. Also, Jonathan Morris from Fox News was the Priest at the end! Cool!

I liked it, though watching deniro move around like an old man while being young while beating up people was cringe worthy, it made me laugh. I liked it over all though... it was on the long side.

The movie was boring. Even had it been edited down to 2 hours, there really wasn't much of a story there. Also, the effects to make them look younger were awful. It was really distracting.
I personally don't care, at all, about Jimmy Hoffa, and his "fame" was so long ago, that this movie is just largely irrelevant and not compelling. Having said that, Pacino turned a great performance. Even at his age, he's still an electrifying actor. DeNiro was boring, like he's been for decades. Pesci was good playing against type. Scorsese can still make great movies, and The Wolf of Wall Street is one of the greats, but he missed the mark on this one. |
|
It was good not great... I’m big mob movie guy. It was not goodfellas or casino. Then again I just watched Lillehammer On Netflix so that probably made this seem better.
|
|
I would like to see it because Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors of his era. I would also like to see Pesci and Pacino in one more mobster film.

Finished it. If you like gangster movies with "classic" gangster movie actors, you'll like it. Was it Casino or Goodfellas? No. But still worth a watch, and for me on a topic I really didn't know much about.
If you hate actors based on their politics, don't watch movies or tv shows. |

Pesci and Pacino were awesome. DeNiro may have been ok but my hate for him can’t let his talent come through. I enjoyed the movie.

Tried watching it. Way too damn long and after the first hour I really didn’t give a damn about the characters. Frankly it got boring.

We watched it tonight. Boring as hell. Goodfellas it ain't. All these actors need to retire yesterday.

Just watched it. If you're a fan of those films… Godfather, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, Departed, Black Mass, etc, etc, it's "a must see." Just don't go into it thinking it's going to be a next level Scorscese film. He toned down the classic Scorscese cinematographic effects- slow panning shots, birds eye view, fast editing and so forth. It's a bit slow moving and subdued. But in classic Scorscese style it's total immersion. It puts you right there in the 50's, 60's, and 70's and visually leaves no stone unturned. It's just a bit slower paced and I dare say long.
The aging effects were of course obvious but I'll venture to say that it was landmark. AFAIK this is the first film to rely so much on this technique. This is the future of films and it will be all but perfected in maybe 5 years. Soon enough you'll barely know they're doing it. |
|
Just watched, my take:
- interesting story, I never knew much about Hoffa - too long and the end really dragged out - got a little lost sometimes because the characters were so similar in some cases - a little sad seeing how old the main actors look. Makes me feel old Anyways, not great not terrible. A decent way to spend the evening, likely won’t watch again. Edit: it was truly visually stunning if you want to relive your youth. |

“Who Framed Rodger Rabbit” had cartoon scenes that looked more believable than Bobby D beating up that grocer.
