The next time you decide to floor it and blow down the New Jersey Turnpike, beware of a new fleet of "ghost cars" lurking in traffic and waiting to stick you with a ticket.
The State Police today unveiled a newly designed black Chevy Caprice with a frosted image of the division's logo that will be out on the streets just in time for the unofficial start of summer. While the cars are technically marked, they won't stand out in traffic. "The only new thing here is the graphics," State Police Capt. Stephen Jones said. "We've had unmarked cars for years, and it is an effective way to catch that segment of idiot drivers who behave dangerously on the roads until they see a marked car." Jones said these new cars will blend in, just like unmarked cars. View Quote http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2015/05/bad_drivers_beware_new_ghosts_patrolling_the_nj_tu.html Surprised it took them this long. We and other departments went down this path years ago. |

Between Virginia and Maryland I have seen everything from a moped to a garbage truck used this way.

Pickup trucks are not uncommon around here. Generally they are used for DOT inspections but they also do regular traffic enforcement at times.

Indiana SP has a DOT-marked F150 working the construction zones and interstate around Indy. So, if you're driving a white F150 and are stuck behind a 911 fastidiously adhering to the posted limit, you now know why.

I am not a fan of unmarked traffic squads.
I don't like these either. The whole purpose is to have visibility so people obey traffic laws without having to stop them. The idea of using unmarked or "low profile" cars to enforce traffic is just counter productive. But that's my opinion and I'm not the decider. But I won't drive one. |

My old boss on the criminal warrant team drove an old beater minivan. We could roll up damn near anywhere and grab fools. Nobody ever gave it a second look.

Cars doing traffic stops should at the very least have a full size light bar on the roof.
|
|
|
Are "Ghost Cars" like "Ghost Guns"? Build 'em yourself with no VIN? I don't know what the equivalent of a "30 magazine clip" would be on a 'ghost car.'
|
|
Does this skirt some kind of legislation? Like something about unmarked cars not being able to do traffic enforcement or something?

The shame of being pulled over by a Prius trumps any fine you could levy. |

Unmarked or odd vehicles have their place, don't get me wrong, but traffic enforcement isn't ( or shouldn't ) be one. |

People will drive like idiots until they see a cop... then go back to driving like them once they're out of sight. We get plenty of "aggressive driver" complaints for that reason. |

Cars doing traffic stops should at the very least have a full size light bar on the roof. Not worth the cost anymore. A light bar on the roof lets people know without question that the car behind them is actually a police car. Inside headliner bars are not suitable substitutes. Furthermore I question the total cost of ownership since a roof mounted lightbar can be put on a new body style with a couple of cheap brackets while headliner bars are much more specific to a body style limiting their ability to be reused. |
