I’m at the point where I start playing music and podcast and stuff in target language as background noise to get myself in the habit of catching familiar words and expressions and starting to fill in context. I’m at the point where I start playing music and podcast and stuff in target language as background noise to get myself in the habit of catching familiar words and expressions and starting to fill in context. That's pretty cool I haven’t completely forgotten my DLI training. The methods they use are very, very good for rapid target language acquisition. Part of that is immersion, where pretty much everything around you is in target language. That starts within a couple weeks of starting a course. I can’t exactly do that, but I can approximate it by recreational listening and reading in target language and speaking phrases first in French, then in English to my family. That annoys the bejeezus out of the imp, but Duckski understands what I’m doing. |

I'm not holding it against you. Just flipping you shit. Besides, it's smart to use tools like that if you're learning the language. I wish I had these tools available when I was learning Russian. |

Quoted: Down at the farm? How's it going down there? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: That's another thing I need. I have a range that goes to 1000 yds (no qual needed). I just don't have a gun that'll go that far. Down at the farm? How's it going down there? Missouri. Just a fair bit further down the road. Well, I'll be heading down there this afternoon. My brother just texted me that his flight in from CO got cancelled by Untied due to expected weather. If he can't make it in it will be disappointing. He's also supposed to be a pallbearer. |

Quoted: At least you didn't spend that money on crack. View Quote There are homeless people everywhere... This homeless guy asked me for money the other day I was about to give it to him and then I thought he's just going to waste it on drugs or alcohol And then I thought: "That's what I'm going to waste it on!" "Why am I judging this poor bastard?" People love to judge homeless guys Like if you give him the money he's just going to waste it. He's going to waste the money Well, he lives in a box, what do you want him to do? Save it up and buy a wall unit? Take a little run to the store for a throw rug and a CD rack? He's homeless! I was walking behind this guy the other day. A homeless guy asked him for money He looks right at the homeless guy and goes: "Why don't you go get a job, ya bum?" People always say that to homeless guys, "Get a job", like it is always that easy This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants I'm guessing his resume ain't all up to date I'm predicting some problems during the interview process I'm pretty sure even McDonald's has a "Underwear Go Inside The Pants" policy Not that they enforce it really strictly, but technically, I'm sure it is on the books.. |

Duolingo is a pretty decent app as long as you stick with it and supplement with extra materials. Compass is doing Spanish on Duolingo now I like the way they incorporate grammar into the lessons rather than separating it out as an independent concept. Gotta add extra materials, though. Buying books in target language, listening to podcasts, music, TV, etc. Hey, you can start watching telenovelas together! |
