We received an official email from a .gov agency (sorry, I can't say which) that informed us our group buy forum in the EE would need to be shut down and all group buys cancelled, due to the fact that they are facilitating the avoidance of state sales taxes on the purchases. If your state or the state you are buying from collect sales tax, it has to be accounted for and so the site can't be a part of helping you with that sale.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Kindly tell them to fuck off. How does this have anything to do with sales tax? Group buys can be coordinated through the manufacturer or retailer.

If this is just a sales tax issue why does the government agency making the complaint need to be kept secret? Also since sales taxes are state taxes why are the Feds the ones complaining about?

This is yet another reason why I believe that all content on this site should be behind a login wall. EE Group Buys are visible and searchable without any form of login or site membership.

If you are not a registered user and logged in, this site should reveal nothing but its name and a login screen.

I’m amazed a federal agency has any interest at all in acting on behalf of individual states to collect state sales tax. I would have figured it was on each state to complain and work it out.

I'm further surprised on the sales tax part. If it's a vendor collecting the money if a large enough buy is put together then sales tax is being collected. If a dude is buying it re-shipping then he is paying sales tax for his purchase.
