This makes absolutely no sense considering that sales tax is now collected on almost all online orders. How many people are buying an item has nothing to do with the sales tax. You could collect sales tax from each buyer as they pay and still offer a group buy discount for a preorder of a given number of units.

1. I don’t believe for one second a federal agency emailed this forum to complain about lost revenue for state governments
2. I don’t believe that even if they did care, the group buys on this site were significant enough to make their radar
3. I believe Brownells didn’t like the fact that they were standing to/have lost a lot of money due to group buys and effectively cutting them (the middle man) out
4. I believe just like the uk machete thread it’s easier to blame a gov then explain the real reason

Why and who told you that you weren't allowed to state what agency this is from?

I'm not sure if this is a Nigerian prince type scam, a dumb story to get rid of an unused forum, or a legit sales tax thing. At this point, all are equally as believable.
