Ya, so after watching the NOVA on the Ulfberht blade, there is no way the Earl has that blacksmith killed over something petty like that...or any master craftsman like a shipbuilder for that matter.

I don't know much about viking combat, but I'm digging all the small axe/tomahawk fighting. I've always thought it makes for great fight choreography. Ragnar was parrying a lot with his axe since he was without a shield in the fight scene this episode. Would a wooden handle prevent a sword from biting into it, or sliding down the shaft and taking off their hand? I'd think you'd be missing fingers if you did that long enough. From what I have read, the axe was a preferred weapon for many Vikings in the early Viking period. Especially in the ninth century. The axe brings a lot of energy to the point of contact. It can shatter a wooden shield easier than a sword and also break bones a lot easier. They also required less metal to make. Swords were expensive and required a lot of iron to make. Analysis done on some recovered Viking swords from the early period actually revealed that a lot of them were made with poor quality iron. One has to remember that they lived on the edge of the known world during the "Dark Ages" and things got to them last. It wasn't until the introduction of the Ulfberht sword the it became a weapon of choice for the Vikings. This happened in the middle Viking period. This was a huge leap forward in both metallurgy and design. There was a great NOVA episode called "Secrets of the Viking Sword"that details this pretty good. Just watched the Ulfberht sword video. That was cool as hell. Thanks for sharing that. that was intersting That is REALLY interesting because I had heard that one of the advantages the vikings had was that there Iron ore had high silicates, which made much better steel. This turns that on its head..... Now to do some advanced reading on the subject... |

Quoted: Video of the cast, check out Ragnar's wife Katheryn Winnick.......... Also Ragnar tells the priest that "the offer is still on the table, will you join us please" in the interview !! @4 :25 She is smokin' hot in that dress. If I were the priest, I would have accepted...loudly. |

He eventually become king of 2 of the 3 Nordic countries, sacks Paris, and dies in England. His sonS avenge him. All this in the late 800s I believe. “Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people, Back to the beginning! Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, In the halls of Valhalla! Where the brave may live forever!” |

Doubtful the average blacksmith of that era worked with anything except nursed up pig iron. Keep in mind every settlement had blacksmiths, making nails and fixtures probably consumed most of their time. The Ulfberht or anything even approaching it was probably only made by artisans who had access to ports with wide ranging trade routes. |

Damn, that was unexpected. Six episodes in and the antagonist bites it? I figured they'd save that for the end of the season. Maybe they have better fish to fry? (the brother)
Sounds like Ivar's on his way to wreak some havoc as well. I liked the snake pit scene, a foreshadowing of how Ragnar dies. |

Yes England did or does. I recall some battle hastings or something where a soldier raised his sword to kill a asp and it kicked off the battle. |

Hail Earl Ragnar! Sounds like the name of somebody that would live around here. |

Two thoughts:
1. Anyone else find Toady getting chest-axed immensely satisfying? 2. Earl's wife shanking her son-in-law seemed a questionable decision at best. I mean, a) that dude at the time (i.e. pre-wannabe earl Rollo's proposal) probably represented her's and her daughter's best shot at surviving the immediate future, and b) if Baldy's relatives come complaining, if I were in Ragnar's shoes, I wouldn't think twice about handing her over to them. Solves two problems at once. |

I like the old guy's speech
"Yes...I am old, but I have been a warrior all my life. Many years I sailed with Lord Haraldsson and fought battles against the eastlanders and I watched all the companions of my youth die, and though I fought with them in the shieldwall, never once was I touched by a blade. All the friends and companions of my youth are dead and feasting and drinking with the Aesir in the halls of the gods! While I, I am forsaken! Bereft! Which is why I beg you, Lord, gift me the chance to die with honor in battle and join my friends in Valhalla..." I am glad the little troll got the ax by Rollo and was shocked Siggy killed the Swede so fast. |

Yes, and even if they were venomous, it would've taken a lot longer for him to expire. And no, I didn't pick up on Ragnar's foreshadowed death. Then again I was pretty damn tired. Pretty bummed to see the Earl getting killed off but I was stoked to see his plump little sidekick take an ax to the chest; he probably deserved it more than anyone. Rollo is swine. |

That Ram commercial was pretty awesome. More viking info I was not aware of. What they didn't note is that the Vikings hadn't expected a fight that day and the Anglo-Saxons won and it cost the Vikings 2/3rds of their force before they retreated. Then the Anglo-Saxons had to run south and fight the Battle of Hastings a few days later where the outcome was different. |
