Can anyone school me on the Gatlinburg/ Pigeon Forge area?

I wanted to do another trip out west for our 30th next year, but the wife is looking east. So now we're looking at going east.

Also planning a second trip with the kids to SC. Kids have never seen the ocean. Likely our last family trip as soon the kids will be so busy doing their own thing they won't have time for mom and dad.

We're thinking this is just work stress compounded with the stress of my condition.

I'm at work because the stupid hospital wouldn't let me stay last night and visiting hours aren't until 9AM.

I am still upright, breathing, and maintaining a steady pulse.

We were there for 2 weeks in 2018, rented a "cabin" (Was a 4 story house with 2 hot tubs on the side of a hill.). It was in Sevierville, close to both of those towns. I loved that area. Buds Gun Shop and Smoky Mountain Knife Works are right next to each other, with a Coleman outlet store in between.

Touristy area, until you get outside of the "strip", took some back roads up in the mountains for a hoot. They were fun, narrow, twisty, etc.

It's the area I'd like to move to eventually.

Was not a fan of the Pigeon Forge area, what sounded like a cool small town ended up being a tacky crowded Dollywood

Smoky mountains were cool, also crowded.

Did not spend a lot of time there and this was some years ago so ymmv.

They shut the mill down for maintenance and we threw a bunch of camp gear in my 01 Cherokee and drove South with no real plan.

Those are the best trips. Last year XJ, too. Nice.

We did something similar for 2 trips to Vermont. Knew that we were gonna spend a night or two at her aunt and uncle's place, but that was about it. We knew general areas we wanted to hit, but made no plans.

Some day I'd like to get back up to Maine, last time I was there, I think I was 17.

Smokey Mountains are beautiful. Pigeon Forge is very kitschy and touristy. Still fun in a corny sort of way. You want to stay at Little Valley Mountain Resort.
