North Korea will collapse, whether it is next week or fifty years from now. Stop feeding them, get the inevitable over with now while we're this strong rather than wait for us to weaken further.

European Union to Send Food Aid to North Korea

... and former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway traveled to North Korea in April and issued grave warnings about the food situation there. (All four are members of the Elders, an independent group of world leaders established by Nelson Mandela.)

Brundtland a world leader? Really? That fat socialist bitch needs to hang up the phone right now! Bought herself a seat within the UN with our taxmoney and opened up our country to any scum from all over the planet!

Quoted:
Mr. Carter was particularly concerned about the refusal of the United States and South Korea to send humanitarian assistance to the North, saying their deliberate withholding of food aid amounted to “a human rights violation.”
...

Why don't you tell that to China, Jimmy? Oh, yeah thats right, they don't care about human rights.

Edit: less profanity

Fuck Jimmy Carter.  Let him move to North Korea and see what real human rights violations are.

I do not believe that the US and S, Korea ever signed a "peace" treaty with N Korea. That means we are technically still at war, albeit a cold war. Giving the N Koreans a small amount of food aid to keep their finger off the trigger is a worthwhile aim. The government's sole purpose is the continuation of their rule and they have absolutely no concern for their people except to use them as pawns in a dangerous game of brinksmanship. This scenario will continue to play out regardless of whether Jimmy Carter or the EU steps in today, next week, or next year. The people of N Korea are so obviously beaten down by their government that they have neither the means nor the motivation to urge a change. The small number of citizens who do complain end up silenced. It is a sad commentary that almost 60 years have passed and this despotic leadership is still in power.

Carter is the kind of idiot who would blame the US if war started in Korea because we refused to feed the norks.

Hey!

Don't be talking about your Elders that way!

If Nelson Mandela put her on his E-list, it means that she's extra-wise and smart and stuff...

Who are you to criticize someone who is extra-wise and smart and stuff?

Are YOU an Elder? (Yeh, I figured not!)

How many of those people doubt their government's propaganda? 60 years of continuous lies and total control has got to leave a mark.

There is a woman here who escaped as a child.  I would love to hear her thoughts about this, but I can't remember her user name.  Fem-something or other.

That's Femgungirl. I haven't seen her post in a while.  I wish she was still posting, because  I too would  love to hear what she has to say about stuff like this.

The NK issue is a lot easier to address by occasionally throwing some food over the fence and otherwise ignoring it. A collapsed North Korea is something that the international community doesn't want to deal with.

So we have to pay for their food while at the same time paying to defend our interests that our paying for thier food has enabled them to spend their money threatening?

It's cheaper to throw just enough food at them when they saber rattle than to allow the DMZ and Seoul to suffer an artillery barrage.

They won't defund their military endeavors. Hell, I'd even argue that it is irrational for them to disarm themselves.

They're too highly urbanized to grow a sustainable amount of food.

China doesn't want unrest in the area either - China does support them from time to time.

Because it is our responsibility to protect South Korea in a conflict. The easiest way to win that conflict with the fewest amount of American casualities and loss of American interests is food aid.

No, seriously, I'll do it.  Its YOUR responsibility to prevent me from getting my ass kicked by the guy next door.  So send me money.
