I need a new watch and I like the look of the g-shock.  Anybody have one?  Are they quality built and can they take the wear and tear of an arfcommer?

My first one I had in the mid 90s worked well except for the band pins broke.  Finally lost it after helocasting (jumping out of a helo stans chute into the water at 30 knots/30 feet), as I climbed into the zodiac rubber boat, pin broke again and watch went over the side.  Never had any issues with the functionally of the watch and it worked down to 130 feet.  (I've broken those pins on every watch I've owned)

Got a second and current G shock in Afghanistan 2 yrs ago.  No problems with the pins breaking on this one but no longer diving or jumping like I did 20 yrs ago.  Functions are not too  hard to use even for when I don't have my reading glasses on (sucks getting older)  But I would recommend them as a durable, accurate time keeper and servicable watch.

Solar/Atomic G

I wear this one at work in a steam plant 5 days a week. I don't take it off no matter what I'm working on. I've had it a couple of years now and minus a couple of small scrapes it works like brand new.

+1 for solar/atomic. I have a different model, but the same opinion.

Yes, and during marathons, parachuting, helocasting, diving, skiing (x country/downhill), two way rifle ranges, hunting, etc

The watch is awesome but the band is the weak part. When it goes it's an odd size and hard to find a decent replacement. This may have changed in recent years and I'm just not aware. Anybody know?

I had one about 15 years ago... had altimeter and barometer features.  Great watch, but it crapped out after about four years.  I didn't abuse it, either.   My $40 Timex has suffered far worse abuse and still works fine.

I really like this one. GW-2500BD. Metal band was a requirement, also has solar power and atomic time.

My favorite watch. The watch band usually give out before the watch ever dies.

I wear mine every day, working as a rigger, offshore fishing, handling barges and ropes. I beat and bang the crap out of it and the only thing I've managed to damage on one is the glass from getting welding bb marks, and I wore out the band tail keeper strap on it (literally wore it down till it finally let go).

Well worth the money in my opinion. I like the atomic solar version that automatically turns on the light when you put your wrist up to check the time.

I've had my solar atomic(GW-330A) for 4 years now. No problems and never needed to change the battery.

The only thing I don't like and it's a minor thing is the one I have doesn't have a continous on back light.

I have one of the nicer stainless ones,  it doesn't look as good with a suit as my fossil or Movado, but it does the trick and I don't feel bad about letting it live in my car.

Ok let me lay some back ground for you. I shoe horses for a living. This in and of it's self means most of my EDS (every day shit) get the fuck beat out of it. I would go through two Timex Expedition a year. For my birthday three years ago My GF bought me a G-Shock 1500A. This is a atomic solar analog faced with a shit ton of other features that I don't know how (or care to learn how) to use.  I can not kill this watch.. And the most bad ass part is, I NEVER HAVE TO SET IT!! Change time zones? it resets it's self. Time change? It resets it's self.  Buy one I promise you will not regret it

+1 for the Solar Atomic - Mine is the GW-M5600 - basic and rugged.  Friend at work clued me onto them.  Great watch.

Hard to beat the g-shock in the durability department. I'd own one but I don't like the bulk of them, always preferred smaller watches.

I like the Pathfinder PAW5000-1. But it's not a G-shock.

The analog dial and second hand is what sells me.

I don't know if it would be as durable as a G-shock, but there is no G-shock that looks like or does quite what the PAW5000-1 will.

I've been wearing the old school DW-5600 style series at work since the '80s when they first came out. Not as bulky as the newer style G-Shocks. Tougher than an anvil. Banged the shit out of them in industrial settings. First one lasted >15 yrs. Second one, I lost last February at work. I guess the strap came undone/broke, it fell off and I didn't notice.
I found a like new, DW-5600E Chinese made version on ebay and bought it. It has the back held on with 4 screws. The original Japanese versions had screw on, threaded backs. I'm thinking this one should hold up fine.

Same here. It was about half that price when I got mine though.

Solid fucking watch. Doesn't even show any wear, and I'm pretty rough on it and pretty much never take it off. Haven't even had to set it out to charge since I got it two and a half years ago.

I went through two o the in th service, the first one broke exiting a plane whil in flight and he second died in panama.  They aren't bad watches but if your gonna jump out planes or trek through the jungles of central America I'd find something else

I'm on my third one in the last 35 years or so.

My first two bit the dust after breaking the face on various hard surfaces. Unbeatable beater watch.

LOL....that reminds me of a story.......

Awhile back we were sitting around jawing.  A fellow police officer was bragging about an expensive watch that he had gotten for a gift from his latest GF.  "Omega," something or other.

My other friend with a cheapie G-shock took his watch off of his wrist and said, "But, can it withstand this?"  He then threw it acroos the room hitting a cabinet and it ended up crashing to the floor.  When he picked it up and showed it to us, it was still working fine.  And, it wasn't even a Timex (if you remember the commercials).  Needless to say, we were impressed.  BTW.....back then, we were only reimbursed $50 for any watch that was damaged "on the job."

Personally, I've used a Timex Ironman for about 30 years and have no complaints (only the battery needs changing once in awhile).

Aloha, Mark

I just replaced my Timex Ironman that wasn't water resistant anymore with an all black G-Shock Solar/Atomic (GW2310FB-1) a week ago and I love it.

The silver looking part is actually a smooth black surface. Its a very easy to use watch.

It's what I have now, but they are not as good as they used to be..  See, they used to be made by the Japanese craftsmen.  Now they are made by little children in Chinese sweatshops.

The one on my wrist right now has survived a half-decade of basement dwelling adventuring.

Seriously, I've beaten the shit out of this thing and it doesn't even hiccup.

I really wish all electronics were this reliable
