Our boy is at that age where he can be pacified by watching TV.
Do you eventually tune out the children's shows, or does it eventually drive you mad? |
|
A bit of both
I blocked some of the more annoying ones, the rest aren’t so bad and I tune them out. He will also wear headphones pretty readily and a lot of newer TVs will do their audio over Bluetooth so that may be an option too. |
|
You get used to it but the best thing to do is shut it off after a while and kick them outside. Between the Nintendo Switch, TV and tablets they should only be able to use so much of that. I know its tough during the winter.

Depends what it is. The japanese anima/pokemon stuff annoys me more than traditional cartoons or disney movies if I'm using the TV as a pacifier
|
|
Just wait until you wake up in the middle of the night to piss and realize you're humming the theme song.
|
|
You'll be singing along with disney princesses before you know it

A little of both. Yes, you can tune it out. Tuning things out is a very important skill. You can learn to tune out TV, noisy toys being played with, arguing, kids yakking their heads off over anything, interrupting when you are having an adult conversation, etc.
You can also tell them that there is a time for noise and a time for quiet. Don't ever feel bad for enforcing some peace and quiet. Kids need to learn to play quietly, ride in the car without being constantly entertained, not interrupting adults, how to wait, how to sit still, etc. |

When they were younger I would tell my kids we were going to Grandmas in terms of Dora the Explorer--
Ok Kids, today we have to follow the Looooonnnnnnggg River, then Over the Biiiiiiiiiiggggg Mountains, and finally across the Drrrrryyyyyy Desert---Then we'll get to Grandmas! For some reason it really helped cause they wouldnt ask me if we were there yet. FYI that Translates to - We have to follow the Columbia until we cross the Blue Mountains, and into the Boisie area and down into Utah. Before anyone says the Blues are not big, remember I'm talking to kids here. |
|
Some shows you're just going to have to "no, can't find that one" as they are too annoying. It's funny once they get locked into a movie they like, as they will watch the same movie every day for a month if you let them. Make sure you like it too. :)

Only child OP?
We have three. With that much going on you learn to tune a lot out. Between the oldest (7) watching tv, or playing video games, the middle (2) trying to talk your ear off about anything and everything, and the youngest (1), needing the attention a 1 year old requires, I don’t even notice whatever annoying stuff is in the background. We do have to limit things. Otherwise my oldest would littler stare at a screen for 12 hours. Eventually you will start singing the intro songs to their favorite shows |

Kids need to play outside way more. Ours are way happier when they do. |

My youngest is 14. My youngest nieces/nephews are around 5.
I can still ignore that shit. Easily. |
|
You never get used to it. Some are ok, some make your skin crawl, and you hate it right up until they are gone. Then it brings back the memories from when they were little.

Barney was bad, but Teletubbies was downright disturbing!
However, from what I hear from my friends with younger kids, the shows that are out to day are pretty terrible.... |

View Quote Children's shows never bothered me w/ one exception. I f'ing hate the purple pedophile. (Barney.) It's not anything on the show that bothers me if my son watched it. It just drove me nuts if I had to watch it. Something about the music just grated on my nerves. I banned the purple pedophile from my house but let him watch it at my Mom's when she watched him. |

I still sing Barney theme and blues clues every now and then and that was almost 25 years ago
|

Know what you never get used to OP?
Stepping on legos. Can't tune that shit out! |
|
One day you will.miss it, because you kids are all grown up.

In before real parents don't own a TV and spend time memorizing the Constitution and classical liberal ideals of the nation-state and social contract with their offspring
|
|
Not really.
Shits aggravating as fuck. Not as bad a communist propaganda in Spanish which is the only other thing that’s ever on TV. |
|
It got to the point I was singing "Wiggles" songs in my head on long runs...

I love you,
you love me, We're a happy family, Barney - I Love You (SONG with LYRICS) |

Make way! Make way! Moana it’s time you knew, the people of......
Sorry, what was the question? |
|
Lol.
I don't watch much tv. But last night I was watching America's Got Talent. The only thing I've ever seen Howie Mandel in is Bobby's World and I only knew Sophia Bergara ? in was the Smurfs Movie. Same with Ricky Gervais. N song from Sesame Street. So wait. 10years from now you'll understand. |
|
Mine is almost 3, she only gets a max of 30 minutes of screen time per day.
|
|
Depends. Some is easy to drown out. Others just have voices or songs that drive you mad.
My brain ends up shutting down. I could be wide awake, but put Sophia the First or something on and make me watch it and I’m out within 10 minutes. Good news is I heard Caillou got cancelled. Just hope the never dies reruns. |

We had most episodes of several PBS shows damn near memorized. Even now, 10 years later.

The wheels on the bus go round and round
I love you You love me We're a dysfunctional family |
|
I've made the observation before, and I'll state it again here. Once kids shows had to be mostly educational, the quality went way downhill and they got more annoying in the process.

“Octonauts......to your stations!!”
The Octonauts - Theme Song How could I forget.... SING-A-LONG | Dinosaur Train - Theme Song | PBS KIDS Thankfully, I got my son interested in Johnny Quest early..... |
