Poor kid. Lost one of his legs below the knee.
Apparently, he was snorkeling and following a sea turtle with a GoPro camera when the attack occurred. There's a thread on The Hull Truth discussing it, but a lot of the responses are from locals saying they've never seen this many sharks and are a bit peeved by the special conservation status sharks seem to enjoy. Over June & July, I logged about 30 dives in the Upper and Middle Keys. It was rare NOT to see a shark. Didn't matter if we were diving on a reef or snorkeling in the mangroves, chances are you'll see a shark. Granted, nearly all of them are (usually) harmless nurse sharks, but every once in a while... Only one that gives me the heebie jeebies is when I was spearfishing with my kids on Flagler's Barge. Viz was about 20 feet, and at one point a very large shark cruised by just at the point where you could tell it was a shark but couldn't be sure what kind. It was moving with a purpose but I'm still not sure if it was a huge nurse shark or a medium-sized bull. the Hull Truth discussion of the attack Miami Herald Link A 10-year-old boy on vacation with his family in the Florida Keys was attacked by a shark over the weekend while snorkeling at Looe Key, state wildlife police confirmed Monday. Jameson Reeder Jr. on Saturday was airlifted by helicopter to a Miami-Dade hospital, where doctors amputated his leg just below the knee “to save his life as it was not operable from the damage the shark had caused,” his uncle Joshua Reeder posted on Facebook. “They said the shark made the decision for him,” Reeder posted on his Facebook page on Sunday. “But his life was spared. Thank you, Yeshua/Jesus!!” The family believes an eight-foot bull shark bit the boy’s leg. As he screamed for help, Jameson clung to a pool noodle and his father drove the boat over to rescue him, the post said. View Quote |

I see them while diving, and they are unpredictable, meaning Bull sharks.

It has been seemingly an unusually sharky year here in Florida.

Lots of lemon sharks down there too. Last time we snorkeled there, there were 3 lemons cruising around. But, it’s not too far from Niles channel, and they do catch a lot of bulls there.

They have had bull sharks swim up the Mississippi River as fas as Memphis. They are nasty bastards.

i've eaten blacktip and hammerhead...never had a bull....is it tasty?

Caught 7 foot bull off the beach not more than three months ago. Couldn’t have lobbed the bait more than 50 feet. They are a lot closer than people imagine.

I know a world renowned shark researcher. He told me that he watches his back with the great whites but when diving with bull sharks he worries because they’re completely unpredictable.

First time I was in the Florida it took me about 5 minutes in the water to see a Tiger shark cruising the reef channels.
Had a GF that liked to cage dive with Whites (crazy). Seen lots of sharks in the open ocean, Tiger, Mako, Sand Tiger, Black tip, Grand Hammer Head, Bonnet Hammer Head. None of these concerned me much. But I am afraid of Bull sharks. I know they are there, and I know we have been in the same rivers. But I have never seen one. They seem to be invisible until they go after you. |

there are tons of sharks in the NW panhandle, see big sharks coming around the boat regularly when I'm out fishing. Ive been playing with the idea of taking up some light spearfishing but the shark population is really the reason I haven't done it yet.

I grew up in Miami and spent a lot of time in my youth snorkeling and diving in Miami and Keys area.
We used to see a lot sharks but nurse sharks were most common and harmless but there were more than few bull and lemon sharks too. Of all the sharks in the ocean I fear the bull and tiger sharks the most as they are unpredictable and frequently aggressive. |

Yikes. Dived Looe Key more than a few times. Probably be back there again this winter. Usually just see Nurse and Blacktips. More than a few Great Whites show up on online trackers but they usually don't get into the shallow reef.

I guess, all things considered, losing a leg below the knee is one of the more desirable outcomes of a shark attack. Hope the boy recovers without any other complications.

More sharks in the water, plus more people in the water, equals more shark attacks!

I take my boat out of Sebastian Inlet and Fish the Waters out to about 3 miles. Probably 50/60 feet of water. Two trips ago I was in 40 feet of water and I had what had to be a great white come within 5 feet of my boat. I only saw him on the way down but the only thing I can describe that shark as was barrel chested. Probably about 8 foot long it was either a small Great White or a big bull. My 17 foot boat has never felt smaller.

So what's the best place to shoot a bull shark, and what round to use? |

While I spent a total of 45 days in the keys snorkeling, sailing, scuba diving, including night dives/swims, have spent a few weeks in the bahamas doing same... I've only seen sharks in the wild on the end of a fishing line.
And other than the two local spots known as the "folks from out of town wanna see an alligator, go here" places and the Silver Springs tours, I've only seen one gator in the wild and he was walking across the road a few miles from my fishing spot near cedar key. |

There are less than 100 unprovoked bites worldwide yearly, of which about 10%-20% result in death. It's not known, but most shark bites are believed to be "exploratory" as the shark does not pursue when it does not find the human to be food. This is despite oceanic swimming being the world's most universal recreational activity. Farm animals kill about 50-60 people per year in this country. Sharks kill about 10 worldwide, maybe half at best in this country. Are farm animals ten times deadlier than sharks? Most animals want to be left alone. Sharks are highly efficient killing machines, and if they at all wanted to kill humans in the water it would be trivial. They just don't. |
