Trying to decide if the article title is click bait or an intentional Hunt for Red October reference.

But did you have an Atomic Burger at Pickle's Place?  If you run the numbers painted on the cliffs above through a decoder it says "We missed Montana by 'this much' ".

Those are the NATO designations, not Soviet/Russian ones.

It's doubtful our sonar would even pick it up. And if it did, it'd sound like...whales humping or some kind of seismic anomaly. Anything but a submarine.

I thought that new one they launched last year, Belgorod, was even bigger?

Sometimes the Russian and NATO names don't match.

The Belgrood is bigger, it even states that in the article, so I’m not sure where the “worlds largest” comes intro play.

I wonder if the swimming pool/sauna in the thing was used to the end, or they repurposed them sometime during their career.

Not exactly lost - they know where it is and it has not accidentally go out of service.

I saw that headline. They didn't "lose" it. That implies that it was lost at sea to either military action or an accident. Alternately, it means that they forgot where they put it. (Have you checked all your other ports?)

They are decommissioning it. Which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do to an ancient cold war relic. It certainly beats the standard Russian Navy plan letting it get so far behind in maintenance it breaks down and has to be towed back to port... where it will then sit and fall apart due to rust and neglect.

Yep. You are correct. These kind of titles are misleading. Nothing was lost. The US decommissions ships all the time. The Russians replaced it with an even bigger sub. Dumb ass article.

Weird way of measuring them.  I'd thought Project 941 Typhoons displaced 35,000 tons, but if you go to the wiki on them, it mentions two separate displacement figures:  23-ish thousand tons surfaced; 48 thousand submerged.

How does the US measure displacement for subs?  Anyway, still a big bitch, however you measure it.

The same way everybody does, surfaced and submerged.
