A Russian Engineer Is Set to Spill Secrets to the U.S. About the 'White Swan' Bomber
A man claiming to be a former employee of the famous Tupolev aircraft company is seeking asylum in the U.S. The man claims he used to work on the Tu-160 strategic bomber. The Tu-160 is Russia's most advanced bomber, designed to launch nuclear-tipped cruise missiles at the U.S. The new Cold War between the United States and Russia has apparently played out in an unlikely place: the U.S.-Mexico border. A man claiming to be a former employee of a major Russian defense contractor showed up at the border, offering Russia's military secrets in return for political asylum. The man claims to have worked on the Tu-160 bomber, Russia's dual-capable, semi-stealthy, cruise missile flinging bomber. The man, according to Yahoo! News, drove up to the border with his family in an armored SUV asking for political asylum. The man identified himself as a former civil engineer who worked at the Kazan Aviation Plant. The man claimed to have worked on an "attack jet," but was worried that his past support for Russian political dissident Alexei Navalny would get him in trouble. The man reportedly told officials he worked at Tupolev from 2018 to 2021, and referred to the Tu-160 as the "White Swan," a Russian nickname for the Tu-160, known to NATO by the code name "Blackjack" due to its white paint and graceful, swan-like appearance. |

Why would he need to "spill" secrets? Based on your pic, the Air Force already has one.

They have what, a dozen of them? How many took fragments at Engels?

He was working on the updated Tu-160. Claims that Tu-160 production is about to commence for the new variant. Upgraded with new doo dads. Might be useful intel.

He's gonna spill secrets about the cutting edge design of a now 50 year old plane ?

Why did he need to spill secrets? All he had to do was get a nice tan, dress like a Mexican and ask the nearest Border Patrol officer to arrange a bus ride for him to wherever he wanted to go. We're just letting motherfuckers in for free now, there's no need to be spilling anything.

Russian government officials revealed very little. The cockpit was refurbished to modern standards and all on-board electronic equipment is said to have been replaced with new, more capable ones.
One of the new features acquired by the Tu-160M is the adoption of a tail radar that scans the rear hemisphere of the aircraft to detect approaching hostile aircraft or missiles. Another of the innovative capabilities acquired, associated with the aforementioned, is that it will be able to carry a reverse-launch air-to-air missile. The Tu-160M bomber’s tail radar will detect approaching threats from the rear hemisphere, be they anti-aircraft missiles or approaching fighters, and shoot them down using its own air-to-air missiles. This could well be considered the first means of active self-defense system fitted to a warplane, something that only warships, and more recently some battle tanks and armored vehicles, had previously been able to rely on. Last but not least, the Tu-160Ms, both new and modernized, incorporate new NK-32-02 engines, which introduce improvements in a significant number of parts and components resulting in an appreciable reduction in fuel consumption, which in practice means that the White Swan will have even greater range. I would like to know more - carry a reverse-launch air-to-air missile. Tu-160 has a really cool interior, almost like an old airliner.

Give him a job at Boeing, a Russian may actually improve things.

View Quote In Iraq, if we came across MIGs, we’d shoot them up, or toss a grenade in the cockpit, we’d get calls about those and buried French Mirages, from the local, citizenry, but never a Topolev…but here’s my question: we’d laugh at what we thought were obsolete controls and use of vacuum tubes, but other guys would say there was a good reason they still built them that way. Were those guys right? |

View Quote We were looking at a ‘reverse launch’ system for B-52’s in the mid to late ‘80’s. I flew several test flights to validate the radar portion of the system and the ‘IR handoff’ to the missile seeker head. Pretty cool system, but it never left the test phase. |

Don't be surprise We had civil engineers working on AC structures, major load bearing structural components, and ground support equipment large tooling, and other support structure in the hanger. In the SSTO program, both MDD and LM have civil engineers working on the launch and landing pad, due to rocket thrust erosion. Takes all kind of different engineers to get an A/C from paper concept to operational. |

Russian double-agent planted by Boeing to get more defense dollars. By the time this guy is debriefed the redesigned TU-160M will be capable of low earth orbit flight, launch missiles from orbit and destroy F35s by the hundreds in minutes. Boeing will race to the DOD for trillions of dollars.

Were those guys right? Some old tech is surprisingly resilient. I doubt there was a conscious decision to use tubes over semiconductors for that reason though. It was more likely manufacturing and supply constraints. |

There's a bit more than two dozen of these 1980s bombers flying about.
The weapon systems it launches are more interesting than the old aircraft. |
