The original is still one of my favorite TV series with Richard Chamberlain.
But this looks pretty good, I have to say: Shogun - Official Trailer | Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai | FX |
|
Female samurai?
It's been a minute since I saw the last one but I don't remember that. |

Looks pretty damn good! Will definitely check it out. Was a huge fan of the original series and book.

|
I'll give it a watch.
What I'd really like is a high production value Tai-Pan. |

I saw the trailer and can’t decide if the girl power in the trailer is for Marketing or if the whole story has been revised.
I am guessing that it’s going to be a wokefest. White guy, Anjin-San, the ships pilot is on screen for MAYBE 3 seconds. |

Anjin-san to be played by Will Smith.
The title will be changes to Shonuff. |
|
Ujio from the Last Samurai. He was a great character in that.

This looks like shit.
Mariko was not a fucking Ninja, she was samurai. From the clip they are portraying her as some kind of Disney-esque strong powerful woman in an overt way. That is not who she was. The book was more about how quietly strong Mariko was, using her wits and guile to make things happen. This 10 pounds of shit in a 10 ounce bag is going to shit all over the original, and the book. |

Quoted: Female samurai? It's been a minute since I saw the last one but I don't remember that. View Quote Women were samurai. If your parents were samurai, you were samurai. Some women were more war like, but most samurai women had rudimentary weapons training. They all carried knives in their obi for emergencies, like having to kill themselves to avoid capture, etc. Samurai women were taught to cut their own throats. A prime example of a samurai woman using weapons in Shogun was Fujiko using Anjin-SAN’s pistols to protect him against Buntaro, who was threatening her Master and their house. She also had a sword ready at one time as well to back him up. |

Please Please someone tell me where I can stream the original Shogun

That chick pulls two flint lock pistols and basically holds a Mexican stand off for her master, gets busy with the main character in a threesome and carries his swords for him and uses them a few times. The book is fantastic. |

I have no way of watching it but I still have a collector’s box set on VHS.

Funnily enough I just saw the old Shogun for the first time this summer. Someone told me about it and I tracked down the Blu-ray and watched it through over three nights. It was fucking awesome.
I bet you this version though won't have Anjin-san exclaiming, "What do you take me for, some kind of God-cursed Sodomite?!" |
|
Didn’t Chamberlin come out as a God cursed Sodomite IRL?
Optimistic this stays true to the book, but we shall see. |

Quoted: Female samurai? It's been a minute since I saw the last one but I don't remember that. View Quote Women were samurai. They didn't train with swords, though, but sometimes with spears for household defense. Per the book, anyway. At least one had to pick up a sword and didn't fare too well. |

Quoted: Female samurai? It's been a minute since I saw the last one but I don't remember that. View Quote For fuck’s sake, Mariko-sama is the 2nd “largest” character in the book. On top of that, there is a ninja scene in the book. There are scenes in the book where Mariko and hangers on are caught in the castle and fight their enemy. At one point, she stalks toward opposing samurai who are ready to kill her and her entourage. Hell, before that, her entire entourage ritually challenges their opponents in single combat until they’re all (or almost all) dead). At first glance, it certainly looks like it’s true to the book from what little I saw. |

I’ll be watching that but the greater question is Mariko or Fujiko?

As far as the woke screwing it up? I don’t think it will be any worse that Tom Cruise’s samurai movie.

I will be watching. I will be interested to see this generation’s interpretation of the book.
I generally reread the novel yearly as James Clavell is my favorite author. |

Swords are symbolic code in their premodern society. As well as weapons. It is blatant messaging. A warning and a threat. ETA: The two swords. |

View Quote I am by no means an expert on the book, but I have read it well over 20 times. 7 times back to back because I was in a desert for months and had no other book… The part where she moved toward the samurai was after her guards were killed and she was the last one left. She picked up a sword so she could be killed rather than taken prisoner. She then said she could not live with the shame and attempted seppuko. After she didn’t complete the act they secured her and others in a wing of the castle, and that night the ninja came. By no means was she good with a sword, but she tried. |

So there seems to be a bad ass sword master female who at one point faces off 5 plus soldiers alone.
I don’t remember that from the one I watched before. Don’t recognise the lead guy actually as he’s only in the trailer a few seconds he might be 4th lead in his own show |
