38 Super has been illegal in MX for about 50 years.

All guns are basically illegal.

Tell your Mexican customers to buy a 1911 in 45 like the real Mexicans.

Timely post, as I was thinking about digging out my Colt Government super to shoot this week.  The horsey is definitely what you want if you can find one.  I’m starting to think about what to do with it, as I’m down to about 700 rounds of ammo and I’m not seeing the $8/box Aguila these days.  I’m probably going to have a 9mm barrel fitted.

Highly polished colts with the Virgin Mary on the grips will sell quickly . Gold and silver inlays are gtg . The more bling the better . Mexican flag is gtg . Think shiny , flashy , over the top style stuff . And make it very expensive ! Some of them will look like beggars but will pull out a wad of cash that would choke a burro . And get up to date on texican slang . Don’t overly insult them , but if you can get their friends to fuck with them about being “pinche” , you will make more profit !

I'll make more profit if they come back.

Also a high probability they won’t come back because of other reasons too . Check what your competitors are pricing fancy 1911’s at . Guarantee you the ones coming in with matching ostrich belt and boots will not give a fuck what it costs . And if you have a tooled leather expensive holster with matching mag holders they’ll buy that too . Just my opinion .

I work a show in NOVA that has a large hispanic attendance, and each show I will have a couple of guys ask if I have a 38 super, and yes, they are Mexican

besides a Colt,   RIA makes a great 1911 in 38 super,

owned one myself (got an excellent deal) and only sold it because I found a  70 series Colt

I just set the settings to "In Stock" so I never see it.

Maybe Sports South is listing dozens of em every day in emails, I'm not going to spend my time digging through all that.

Sunday night, I set up carts at each of my distributors w/ everything they have that I could possibly sell, compare prices on what they have in stock, and order from the 1 or 2 cheapest for next weekend.  Lately, Lipsey's & PSA have been killing it, but Chattanooga, and Sports South get some in too.

As ODA_564 pointed out earlier, .38 Super 1911s have always been popular in Mexico (and Mexicans in the U.S.) for whatever reason.  It was a thing when I was growing up in CA in the 70s & 80s.

I’m pretty sure my Colt Series 70 .45 caliber pistola automatica ended up in Mexico after it was stolen out of my car in NM, so I don’t think they’ll refuse a Colt in that caliber either.

They're popular with me too.

I have a Colt Series 70 LT WT Commander with a .38 Super top group (and .45:ACP top group) and a RIA 1911 in .38 Super.

I love the caliber.  Corbin DPX copper hollow points in .38 Super are awesome (Sportsman's Guide sale in the 1990s!).  But it's the only caliber I come back from the range with negative cases (always).

The skeptic in me says...

They want .38 Supers, which are not popular in the USA but are popular in Mexico.

Are they taking them back to Mexico?

Is that legal?  Does it matter?

Clearly you are not familiar w/ the Hispanic handgun market.  .38 Super has not been legal in Mexico for decades.  It's a very popular round among American Hispanics for historical & cultural reasons, not practical ones.

No, they're not taking them back to Mexico, they can't get ammo for them there.  If there were taking guns back to Mexico, it would be .38 Specials & .380s for legal carry, or 9x19 & 5.56 for cartel use.

People can get all sorts of shit in Mexico. I've seen security guards, for example with PM-63s and CZ23 SMGs, probably both sourced from Cuba. Do those pistols bought in America go to Mexico? I'm sure of it for at least a small portion, just like I'm sure shit from Central America, Cuba and China gets into Mexico, too.

The number of non-government people "legally carrying" in a nation with one legal gun store is likely fractionally less than 1%.

IIRC, the late Skeeter Skelton used to speak highly of the .38 Super in his articles in Shooting Times (or was it Guns & Ammo Magazine?) in the late 70s and early 80s.

The caliber is popular enough for manufacturers to continue to offer 1911s in it, which is surprising to me (but not wrong) and speaks well of its performance.

IIRC you can swap a 38 super barrel into a .40 or 10mm slide and it will work fine. With appropriate magazines of course.

.38 Super got added to the list of cartridges reserved for the military at least two decades ago.  But that is indeed what caused its popularity.  Americans who were able to get permits to carry in Mexico back when that was actually feasible used to bring guns in that cartridge.

There was also a higher level of carry permit that permitted ownership and carry of handguns in cartridges on the reserved list; my uncle had one for a long time, but they stopped readily issuing them years ago AFAIK.

Despite all of this, the .38 Super remains popular, even on the black market.

Some of the handguns I've seen seized from cartels have been .38 Super 1911s.  Also in other cartridges, but the .38 Super still has a following there among those who DGAF about the gun laws.  I do agree that decades of it being a legal cartridge before it was added to the list turned it into a cultural thing.

Love my Colt LW Commander two-tone. Sadly, they no longer make the OD green slide they used to.

Sig makes/made their P-220 in .38Super.

Majority of the options will be a 1911 pattern gun, IMO.

The caliber is soft shooting & has better specs than a similar loaded 9mm, i.e. speaking of similar things like +P, range loads, etc.

The older "race gun" guys of IPSC used to use .38Super caliber before .40 came along to make major with.

Seems like there were several articles from the "old" gun rags like Guns & Ammo, etc. Writers like Skeeter Skelton, Bill Jordan, etc. wrote about the .38Super caliber & performance. Great reading in the day on what was (to me) a mostly unknown caliber.
