Fun fact: It was invented by a guy named Don Gill, hence the term.

My Dad is permanently crippled from failed back surgeries.  He's on regular doses of Norco just so he can live without pain.

So far there's no problem getting prescriptions from his doctor.  But, i'm worried that one day his doctor won't be allowed to write him scripts anymore for Loratab.

From what i've been reading, people with legitimate needs for opioid pain killers are turning to illegally purchased loratab or heroin to take the pain away.

The problem is the government always throws the baby out with the bath water.

Sorry for your dad and fuck cancer.

I had to beg to get 10 Tylenol 3 with codeine after my hand surgery this year. When I got them, I was afraid to take them when I was in pain because I knew I wouldn’t get anymore. Fucking stupid rules.

I burned 1/3rd of my arm a few years back, got it debbeved and shaved, boy that was fun, they basically gave me Tylenol with codene and when I realized I would run out before my follow up appointment I basically had to get pissed off and they prescribed me the 2 pills I needed to get me through the weekend.

My POS sister in law however literally has a Walmart sack full of pain killers for her fibermialga (sp).

It’s literally bullshit.

build a wall
deport them all
reboot Ellis Island
put our troops on the border
run counter insurgency ops into Mexico against the cartels and their corrupt government

that should put a dent in the real "opioid crisis"

Sucks watching a loved one suffer. Took the wife to a dentist yesterday as she has a terrible tooth ache, well she cracked her tooth and has an appt on Sat to fix it. U think the dentist could give her some pain meds to help..nope. I thought she had the rxs in her purse and asked about stopping at the pharmacy. The wife is crying almost and said she does not write pain kilers anymore.

OH fuk no, spun the car around and I went right in and told the dr to fuk her self, got my $1k back and ended up sourcing the meds on my own for her.

We are screwed in FL

The stupidity has gone Tarded, Retarded, and then drooling moronic.

The State in it's ultimate wisdom, limited by southeastern corner, fucktard socialist majority, and Citiot/Burbtard thinking  as representative,  decided to shackle Veterinarians, with an ass ton of conflicting regulations concerning documentation, and prescriptions.

The elected dipshits, created a legal trap for any Veterinarian, that dares fill a script for any opiod....because the filthy scum in the city's, openly and willingly abuse themselves, out of pathetic weakness.
Now, Veterinarians have a huge legal liability, and scripts have to be filled at Pharmacy cost, at the local pharmacy.

If your pooch tears an ACL, you pay for Surgery, and the only thing the Vet can offer is akin to Aspirin.
The option to pay out the nose for pain meds for the pooch is still there, you will just have to pay 6-7 times as much, at the local pharmacy.

The reason?
The sick fucks addicted to the shit, were injuring their Dogs, Cat's, and other pets on purpose....just to get the lower cost scripts, so fuck anyone's pets or live stock, lets drive up the cost; and line the pockets of mega pharma. The usual Govt. maggot answer.

Legalize the shit.
Ban Narcan.
Let Darwin do his thing and be done with the trash.

People suck.

Yes, people do suck. And my family are part of the problem. Patients are living with constant pain so hood rats and trailer scum can't OD themselves. These people are a constant drain on society. Their families are subjected to non-stop turmoil. They need to be dead. That's where they're headed anyway. Legalize everything. Either we're free or not.

At one of our hospitals some patient with a pic line went down to the lobby to meet his buddy. His buddy injected heroin into his pic line. DRT instantly. The shit hit the fan. Intense training for the nurses. Our nurses are training to be baby-sitters.

We're living 1930 all over again except the drug gang leaders are getting rich instead of Al Capone. The do-gooders say we can't legalize it because "for the children" bullshit.

I think culture makes a huge difference.  Americans love their drugs.  I do wonder if all that stuff was available over the counter if it would cause a temporary surge in drug abuse and then it would drop back down and reach a steady state.  Near prohibition doesn’t seem to be working.

Medical and non-medical MJ is illegal, although the cops I know will just confiscate it and let you go instead of arresting for misdemeanor possession.  The DA of the county I live in no longer will bring misdemeanor possession cases to trial because they would be slammed with cases and unable to prosecute felonies.

Cannabid oil is legal now, though, as long as it has no more than 3% THC.  I have a cousin that sells it now and swears by it for relief of her pain.  My wife has had nerve pain and muscle pain for the past 10 years since she had a mastectomy in 2009.  She's looking into it as a way to relieve the muscle and nerve pain.

I’ve seen both sides of it. My uncle had back surgery, got hooked on the pills. Cost him his job. When my grandfather died, said uncle managed to steal all the pain meds in the house. It was a mess.

My wife has been using a pain med long term for knee and back. For years her doctor would send the prescriptions to our mail order pharmacy. A couple of years ago TN declared that docs could no longer send that stuff via escript. Even ambien. And the doc stopped writing prescriptions for a year. Six months at best.

When my wife was having gall bladder problems, three trips to the same ER in two weeks. Nurses and doctors thought she was just looking for drugs, a suspicion I had confirmed by a nurse friend. Same for me when I went to the ER for an intestinal blockage. Took six hours to get anything for the pain.

I’m in the ‘opioid belt’ and have seen addiction destroy families. It isn’t pretty. Over 10 years ago, I know how easy it was to get a prescription for oxy. Docs would throw pills at every problem. I once threw an oxy prescription in the trash in front of a doctor. I just wanted to work, not get high.

Well I am a true southern boy raised in GA and AL, it really bothers me that my beloved states are still holding out on legalization when every other State is going full steam into it as well as our neighbors CAN and MEX.

Luckily here in S FL the dispensaries are really starting to pop up, of course on the news last night my town, is still being butt hurt about it and not giving CO's to the MM dispensaries. So I have to drive my wife to the next place which is 45 min south.

CBD needs to be used with the 93% THC products to really do its magic. We were in line at PUBLIX a while back, checking out, and 3 of the major magazines all had full cover weed leaf on them ..hell even our Pharmacies have big weed leafs now in the windows for CBD. Times are a changing

Over 34 years in healthcare here and I have seen the "rules" change 4 times at least.  Swings from "opioids cause addiction so don't prescribe them" to ""we undertreat pain so opioids are OK. Use them"
The current epidemic has been caused by a handful of knuckleheads overprescribing to line their pockets,
The overprescribing has lead to a number of deaths around the country.

So now we over react and cast all prescribers into the same "guilty" pool.  Sound familiar?

We now have a current generation of prescribers who are both afraid to prescribe opioids responsibably, and are sanctioned by medical boards if they do, and who actually don't know how to prescribe them.
Stupid is as stupid does.  I probably won't live long enough to see the next swing, but it will come.

My wife is a pharmacist, and she wishes all the opiod scripts would be handled by pain clinics, because she is constantly having to deal with addicts trying to score more pills off of her.  Every excuse known to man why they used up their supply in like 3 days.   Frankly, I wish most of them would just go and OD themselves and do all of us a favor and just die.

To a large extent yes. My first Oncologist had no problems writing a prescription for anything related to my treatment, then he retired. You are full of shit, sir!  Federal law prevents any doctor from phoning in schedule II drug prescriptions to the pharmacy.  You have to physically obtain a written prescription from the doctor's office and take it to a pharmacy to be filled.  You didn't have a script for Oxycotin waiting for you at a pharmacy, as you said.  Why lie about it??
Electronic scripts are a thing. But you know it all so stay ignorant.
I have stage IV cancer.  I'm on a time release (XXX) and (YYY) for the push through pain. Both are schedule II.

I have yet to get a paper prescription.  My Onco does it all electronically.  He can only prescribe 30 days at a time though.

I have worked in heavy construction my entire life and at this point all of my joints are arthritic. I can barely get out of bed in the morning but I have to to take my morning meds.

About two hours later I can move well enough to get out of bed and do the morning clean up needed.

About six months ago, my bone doctor showed me a report from the CDC about the "Opioid Epidemic" and told me that she will be lowering my meds to a much safer level.

As of now I am taking less than half of what I have been prescribed for the last six years and my quality of life is almost unbearable.

During the last six months I haven't been able to do much more than daily chores and duties. I won't go fishing or traipsing around like I used to because I know I won't be able to move for three or four days after. I can't even drive easily.

I am not proud to tell the people I deal with that I take opioids on a daily basis because of all the news coverage of the "Opioid Epidemic" People look at me like I am some kind stoner wanting only to get high.

I get tired. I have tried PT and all of the conventional methods of pain reduction without meds and it's not working. In fact, it makes life worse for me.

At this point, what should I do?

Like I said, I am tired and I am not happy with my life. Oh well, it's for the children I guess.

OP and others, I am sorry that people have to be uncomfortable in the stage of life they are at. I would happily give up my meds if it would make your loved ones more comfortable.

The opioid crisis hurts patients more than curtails junkies.  We legislate to the lowest common brain cell and with junkies that's pretty low.  Seriously, look into hospice, they have a different view on pain control.

This is an example of what we were doing with opiates 5+ Years ago. Physicians were prescribing them to anyone with a pain complaint. Now lots of people with chronic musculoskeletal pain (joints, back pain, fibromyalgia etc) are dependent on opioids when the drugs never should have been prescribed to begin with. Then it gets hard to tease out what is pain vs withdrawal/dependence. Long term we need better non-opioid pain drugs. Short term solutions are less clear. Certainly admitting that what we were doing as a profession was wrong and trying to get opioid users whether medical or otherwise into treatment seems like the best than can be done currently. Suboxone or Methadone programs seem like the best options at present.

I work for an anesthesia and pain group and about 1/3 of my patients are on some treatment for chronic pain.

Many patients need opioids, but many don't as well. People expect to live with zero pain, and it just isn't possible in all circumstances. A multimodal therapy helps, but many people arn't willing to lose weight, exercise, go to PT, stretch, etc and just want the quick fix that also happens to give a euphoria. It doesn't help that the analgesia of opioids steadily declines with use, and an increasing dose is needed to correct that. The increased dose also increases the troublesome side effects, that often need other medications to solve.

Officials, lawyers, and insurance/medicaid have forced providers to steer away from prescribing opioids. The patients are often a "pain" to the provider, and pose an ever-increasing risk as they need more and more medications. Following patients requires more and more vigilance due to legal requirements, and payments for following these patients continues to decrease. It dissuades providers from taking pain cases, and especially ones that require opioids. To highlight the "pressure from above" placed on those who administer/prescribe opioids, here is something that should alert you: facilities are now being required to provide their policy for ELIMINATING the use of opioids in the Operating Room....yes, as you are being cut open, they would like for the anesthesia provider to not use opioids!

I don't have an answer for it, but IMO anytime the .fed decides to tell medical providers what they can and can't prescribe, there will be issues for both provider and patient. Providers have to have some sort of accountability, but those requesting opioids should share the majority of this accountability. They should document usage, alternative measures attempted to relieve pain, etc. We need to know what works and was does not, and where the pills go/how many are used. It's a quandary that is currently negatively affecting both parties.
