General Order No. 3 was issued on June 19th, 1865, by Gen. Gordon Granger, general in charge of the District of Texas after the war, to the enslaved persons of Galveston, Texas, informing them off their freedom, given two years earlier on the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Galveston on June 19th, 1866. Which makes sense, it being celebrated where it happened. Historically, the holiday didn't spread out from Texas until the Great Migration of the last century. The holiday at least makes more sense than Columbus Day, when the guy never landed on what is the mainland United States, but what do I know? Dis thicc dicc
