Man, I hated that movie as a kid. Shit was dark. Disney wouldn't dare make that one these days.
|

Always thought Maximilian was the cooler looking robot. Vincent was the creepy looking one with those dead cartoon eyes.
|
|
Loved that movie as a kid. I got a Maximilian toy & he would always kick Darth Vaders ass.

Never heard of it.
"The Black Hole" - sounds like some porno I wouldn't click on... |

Saw that with my dad in the theater. I thought Maximillian was the coolest robot ever, Captain S.T.A.R. came in a close second. I always felt bad for Old Bob.
I had all the action figures as well |

Maximilian, full power! We are going through!
There was a rumor about a remake awhile back |

View Quote The only reason Disney made it was because Walt was dead; it would never have been greenlit while he was alive. It was REALLY dark for a Disney movie, even today it's probably the darkest they've done under the Disney banner (and not one of their subsidiaries) |

The one piece of dialogue I remember from that film is, "The bigger they are, the harder they fawwwwwl."
And yes, that robot scared the crap out of me. |

bought it on Prime for 3.99 last week. Showed my 12YO, and she loved it, all except the ending. She was trying to figure out how the Dr ended up inside Maximillian

I couldn't believe how people hated that movie when it came out. Sure, it's not your typical family friendly Disney for that era, but it's an underrated flick in my book. I thought the cutesy robots were dumb and unnecessary. They detracted from the seriousness of the rest of the film. Other than that, though, I think the movie definitely deserves a viewing. Watch it with an open mind and don't sit there going, "This is DISNEY?"

I liked how the young astronaut tasked with guarding the Palomino didn't think that was an important job, and wanted to come with the boarding team.
It was literally the most important job. |

the disney answer to Star Wars.....great movie, and its aged pretty well too

Saw that in the theater as a kid. Yup, Maximillian was nearly as scary as Darth Vader! I liked Old Bob. I thought the Ship was cool how it was all lit up. The People/Robot assembly line was disturbing.
I haven't seen it since I was a kid. Might have to give it a watch. (Maybe I'm learning with stuff from my childhood that it hasn't aged well, and I'm usually better off keeping my memories intact. ) |

While I'm not sure the two items are related, Disney created Touchstone pictures as a format to handle tougher/ darker/ non-Walt D approved content.
Black Hole was 1979 (!) Touchstone was created in 1984 I'll rewatch it, the dorky robot was annoying, but everyone liked Max |

Anybody remember this?

Not many Disney flicks have an allegory of Hell for Dr Frankenstein and his creations... Great soundtrack. For early 80s, the FX were amazing. |

In that era, G-rated movies were losing at the box office. It was thought that the market for safe, family friendly movies was dying, and the G-rating was sort of like the "mark of death." That was the reason for Disney suddenly making PG-rated films. We can argue whether the analysis was right or wrong, but that was the main reason for it.

Thanks for the heads-up.
I watched it this evening. Haven't seen it in decades. |

The Black Hole - Maximilian Kills Durant |
|
Maximilian is one of the most badass, underrated robots in movie history. He does what he wants. The scene where he shreds Norman Bates with his blades was seriously damaging to a lot of kids (me included).

You guys have me intrigued talking about how dark it is. I do like a happy ending most of the time though.

View Quote Absolutely! There was even a brief book series with a few episodes after they went through. I have this on DVD because it was a fun watch as a kid. Still is. The opening credits and when they first spot the swirling hole are particularly cool. Double barreled laser guns! |

Well that was... Interesting, a movie I've been wanting to see for a long time.
Not every day you see a movie where the villian falls facefirst into hell. |
