An Athens man arrested Friday faces drug and counterfeit money charges after he came to the sheriff’s office to try to get his vape pen back that was confiscated Thursday, when it tested positive for THC (marijuana).
Lance Thornton, 24, is charged with possession of a forged instrument 1st degree (3 counts) and illegal possession of marijuana 2nd degree. He was released from the Limestone County Jail on $16,000 bond. On Thursday evening, a deputy observed Thornton, who was apparently intoxicated, at Lowes in Athens after an employee asked him to keep an eye on Thornton. The deputy followed Thornton until he went into Wal-Mart, then confronted and detained him when he came back out for public intoxication. Deputies found three counterfeit $100 bills on his person. Thornton told the deputy he wanted to cooperate with investigators in locating additional counterfeit. However, when investigators arrived to assist, Thornton was incoherent and unable to provide information due to his level of intoxication. Investigators placed Thornton under arrest for public intoxication so that he could provide information once he was sober. Investigators found a vape pen in Thornton’s vehicle and tested it for THC (marijuana). The test was positive, so they confiscated it and informed Thornton he could not have it since it contained THC. On Friday, Thornton came to the sheriff’s office after bonding out of jail and demanded the return of his vape pen. Investigators told Thornton he could not get it back because of the marijuana it contained, and he continued to insist. Investigators warned Thornton that he was about to be arrested on the counterfeit and drug charges if he did not leave. He continued to argue and was arrested on the listed charges. |
