Quoted: wow what a deal. I'd have paid 2-3x that for that Columbian. OP: there is lots of good advice in this thread. I also recommend checking out Estatesales.net, Craigslist, Offerup, and go see what you can find with a reasonable price. There is a lot of good information as well here. If you end up buying a Craftsman or Columbian with a 506-##### product code, it is going to be a U.S. made. Japanese foundries also made good vises, and their PN's begin with a 3. Quoted: A Wilton Bullet vise is a beautiful piece of American Craftsmanship. A used pre-war example can be found for $100-200 but their still made and cost new $500. You'll have to search because collectors will snatch them up. A sold a couple of my late FIL had. I'm sure they were his fathers. View Quote How much is this worth? You'd have trouble finding AR stuff that would give any kind of a bench vice trouble.
Just pick one. |

I got all this for 5 bucks at an Estate Sale. The vise is an old Columbian. The axe is a Keen Kutter just FYI.

Quoted: Since the Wilton tradesman is made in Taiwan now, save your money and get a Capri forged steel vise. View Quote Capri is Taiwan as well. Looks to be welded together and the proportions are all wrong, way too thin. The way the movable jaw is literally shaped like a (T) is less than desirable. Clamping a part in the middle part of the jaw would be fine but if you clamp down hard at the end of the jaw, the (T), will flex. Not good. Hard pass. |

I have 2 dumb questions:
Where do I find a vise with wheels for adjustment instead of the stupid bar that moves back and forth? What is the optimal sized vise for working on ARs? |

Which is to say, "not India." I would trust China to make a decent bench vise, at least (provided you pay for it, of course). They aren't that complicated or demanding. India, however, can't even make an anvil right. |

Ridgid F-60.

Eventually, you're going to put something in there that has the odd leg sticking out, and the only way to tighten the vise is to slide the handle down and out of the way as you rotate. Trust me. |

I bought the cheapest 8" Yost off of amazon that I could find. It isn't tier one, but it does what I need it to do.
|
|
I have a 3" Wilton bullet vise with swivel base and a 3" Yost (when they were still US made) fixed base vise.
In the process of hopefully acquiring a massive Prentiss vise. Get something old and American made if you can. Otherwise the forged steel vises are OK for home use. Their jaws don't have replaceable inserts though so that is a big drawback. The Bessey vise another person posted a picture of is what I'm referring to. |

Found a US made Craftsman 506-51801 for $65.
