I use a Neti every morning now. You're right, it's great stuff if you've got sinus/hayfever issues.

They took the packing out but there is disolvable packing in the right cheek and upper sinus. There are splints that will come out on the 2nd.

the plastic splints that I had in cut into my nose I cut the bottoms off before they were taken out. So watch if that happens if they start cutting into your nose reshape the ends. But you could kinda see mine sticking out yours might be farther up.

Final update tonight

Took a percoset at 630pm - didn't really need it but I didn't want everything to wear off later and really hurt. I can breathe through both nostrils which is a huge improvement. I have a little bit of bleeding from the right nostril but they gave me a thing that connects to each ear that holds a folded gauze pad under my nose so I am not wiping it or sticking tissue or gauze up my nose. They gave me afrin to use to stop any runaway bleeding. I haven't had much bleeding down the back of the throat that I can tell. No nausea or puking...

I am headed to bed and hope to have a restful night.

Thanks for all the well wishes and scary stories - I will see what tomorrow brings.

Did not sleep worth a damn. Got a wedge pillow to sleep on the first couple of days but I am a side sleeper. Swelling has made it so I am having to mouth breathe. I got maybe 2 hours. I read most of the night.

Left nostril stopped draining last night. Right nostril still draining out the front. Not having any drainage down the throat that I can tell.

Pain is maybe 2.

I had balloon sinuplasty, fixed deviated septum, turbinate reduction and bone spur removal. Could not have been any less pain-free. The worst part was when I passed the little rolled up chunks of bacon (well at least they LOOKED that way) that had shoved up my nose for packing. Didn't hurt but was supremely gross. The only thing that gave me any pain was the healing from the deviated septum. Nose was pretty sensitive to bumps and whatnot for a few months after surgery. Needed zero pain meds after I came out of sedation. Two years later and it has changed my life! No more sinus infections every other month and I have SOOO much more energy. I know it has helped with sleep too.

Now my vasectomy was another story. I'd never do that again. Still have pain from time to time.

Yeah my vasectomy was another story as well - over a year and I am not clear - not a full load but enough remnants that he can't call it a success. I did not ask enough questions before going in.

Not bad at all. It is actually a great feeling your nose will be at its most open it is ever going to be. You just may start bleeding a lot if it knocks a clot loose.

I must've had a deviated septum since birth. I can remember as a 5 year old having a stuffed up nose. Was just horrible. I was always using nasal sprays so I could breath through my nose.

Had the repair surgery done when I was 18 (about 30 years ago). For probably 3-4 months afterward, there wasn't much difference. Then, gradually, my sinuses started to clear. I didn't use any nasal spray during this time. One thing it did, however, was allowed me to become allergic to a couple tree pollens after about 3-4 years. The doctor told me it was more-than-likely a result of everything being opened up. Never had an issue before that. So now I suffer for a couple weeks every spring, but it was worth it.

ETA: I had packing and splints in my nose. When they said "splints", I imagined something maybe 1/2 - 3/4"long, 1/8" wide ... when the doctor pulled them out, it was a freaking tongue depressor. I swear that damn thing was about 3" long (or more) and about an inch wide.

You would be surprised at how something so big can just disappear into areas you don't think it will fit.

we have tons of items at work for surgeries that are huge. Most OB, some of the ladies at work shudder when they pull them.

At the same time I shudder when I see a prostate vaporization, So I suppose I kind of understand.

Well that was not bad at all...

Took a percoset when I left the house and when I got there they gave me a spray of afrin and two sprays of lidocaine. One of the stents had a stitch holding it in place. She snipped the stitch and pulled it out. Wasn't too bad. She pulled the other and it wasn't bad either. She did go back in and suctioned a HUGE glob of mucus and blood clots that seemed more of a relief than anything else.

She tried to get some of the dissolvable packing and that was pretty uncomfortable.

She said to keep using the saline spray very often through the day and a saline rinse in the morning and evening to help break up the clots and remove what's left of the packing.

I can breathe so much better now. Out if both nostrils at the same time. Imagine the first time you used afrin during a cold or allergy and how opened up you feel. That's how I feel. I should have done this years ago.

Here is wishing the OP a continued comfortable recovery.

Whenever we do this medical crap here (vasectomy, colonascopy, sinus, wisdom tooth or whatever I am amazed at the varied responses.

How much of it is ham fisted medical folks who slam things around and how much of it is folks who perceive pain and discomfort in different ways?

I have had a colonoscopy that wasn't bad , several wisdom teeth that were different but still not too bad , shoulder surgery to repair some damage from a car crash and a chest cracking to do heart bypass and while none of this stuff was pleasant none of it was really too bad when
I consider the results .

I have to believe I have had some great doctors and maybe some good luck but I also have to think the way I tolerate pain is kind of twisted.
Years ago I thought I was kind of a baby about pain but perhaps not.
I also think some folks mentally get themselves all wound up about how bad some procedure is going to be..

My Experience ... So Far

Reported to the hospital at 630AM yesterday. Put me in a gown, laid my on a gurney, started an IV line. The anesthesiologist gave me Versed Rx.

Don't remember anything except the ceiling tiles melting while I kissed my wife goodbye at 700AM. I was intubated.

The ENT told my wife I had a pretty broken nose and it was difficult to fix. I could not wake up from the anesthesia very well. They have given my Dilaudid which suppressed my respiratory system. I was in recovery till about 1200PM unitl I was awake enough to leave. They gave me a patch for behind my ear to prevent nausea, Scopolamine. The nurse said they used medical cocaine to stop the hemorrhage. I said 'what did you use'?

I was given a prescription for Bacitracin, Percocet, and Amoxicilion.

The ENT used two splints in my nose and stitched them into position. He also used dis-solvable packing which will make things go easier.

I was given a nose guard to help stop blooding from my nose. The throat is painful/hoarse.

Got out of the hospital at 1200PM.

Once I got home yesterday, I slept sititng up right and had bleeding - not much. I tried to sleep for an hour at a time but I have to keep pissing every hour. One of the drugs has been making me feel like my bladder is full.

Awoke this AM, not to much blood, but 98% nasal congestion and some facial pain. Apparently, they did a 3 procedures. The septum, the turbinates, and cauterization of my adenoids.

It's hard to eat because my mouth is so dry from sleeping with my mouth open.

So far, it has not been that big of a deal and I look forward to breathing better once these splints get taken out next week.

Yup, you'd be surprised at how much coke is used in a hospital. They just keep better tabs on it than a police evidence locker.

Chapstick and throat lozenges will help when going to bed. Whatever they told you about nose spray do it religiously. Can you do Afrin at night?

About 25-30 minutes to fix the septum

about 20-25 minutes on the right and 15-20 on the left

10 to tidy up and call it a day.

Had the surgery in 06.. helped for about a yr.. my right nostril now "scabs" over and i have to "pick" the scab to open it up to breathe... need to have another one just no money..

I am now 24 hours post surgery and here are my problems.

1) Draining blood tinged serous fluid from both nostrils.
2) Can't sleep longer than 1 hour.
3) Have urinary urgency and frequency. I figure out where all the piss is coming from. There is more urine than what I drank in water.

4) My eyes are dropping tears all day because the tear ducts are backed up.
5) The pain is not too bad.
6) Can't bend at the waist without light blood coming out of my nose.
7) Double vision from all the tears draining.
8) I have so much fluid in my sinuses I sound like a goose.

Hopefully, it will be better tomorrow. Did a saline solution irrigation.

I too had balloon sinuplasty last year with polyps removed. Little to no pain,sleep better,breath better. No sinus infections since.

Went twice to the get my sinus checked.

The first exam they found three polyps.

My last exam two weeks ago included a hearing exam

My outer ear drums are ok.

My left inner ear drum is ok.

But

My right inner ear drum I lost part of my hearing on the high range or tones. High pitch sounds.

I was told it was do to the environment. She could not figure out why it only happened in the right.

It dawned on me yesterday. There is always a warning bell ringing on my right hand at work and these are very loud.

It also means that all the other people that do the same job for as long or longer than me, may have the same problem.

1) Worst night of sleep was last night.
2) Off the pain meds. Did not even need to take Motrin.
3) Bleeding has pretty much stopped.
4) Worst part is not being able to breathe through the nose yet. 100% congestion. Nothing relieves it. It's like a solidly blocked wall between my nose and lungs.
7) Saline irrigation did not help. Decongestant does not help. My nose literally makes honking noises due to all the fluid backed up.

I guess the ENT did a really good job with the packing as nothing gets through. I can feel the stitches in my nose now. Exterior noses is straighter and still swollen.

Follow Up: Day 5

1) Afrin does not help.
2) Still at 100% congestion. Actually have mucous bubbles coming out of my nostrils.
3) My problem is that I have zero air flow throw my nose. Irrigation goes nowhere but back out my nostrils.
4) Sleep is still very difficult. I am lucky to sleep a 2 hours continuously. I reached the exhaustion phase.
5) Looking forward to Tuesday when the silicone splints are to come out of my nose.
6) 100% mouth breathing.
7) No pain. Just taking the antibiotic.

This is the splint they used on me in both nostrils.

Apparently, they are clogged.

Early in the post-operative period, the hemi-tubes promptly and irrevocably clog with blood and mucus. The deep-interior location effectively prohibits the patient or caretaker from gaining access to these anterior openings to keep the tubes from blocking. The air passage is now defunct.

Day 6

1) Accidentally sneezed, this resulted in two things happening. A huge blood clot came out of my nose about 1 inch long and when I coughed, a mucous plug about 3 inches long dropped into my throat which I spit out. Yuck.

2) Sleep is increasingly difficult, could not fall asleep until 3 AM slept until 6AM.

3) Eating is difficult because I can not breath and eat at the same time due to the mouth breathing.

4) Only have until Tuesday morning to have the splints taken out. I hope the surgery was worth it, because this is rough.

Update Day 8

1) Was instructed to take two Percocet 1 hour before 9AM apt.
2) ENT with my wife assisting removed the suture through my nasal cartilage.
3) Next he removed the two silicone splints from my sinus cavity. They were completely occluded with hardened blood.
4) ENT sprays Lidocaine into my sinus and vacuums out my sinus.
5) Follow up in 3 months.

Impression: I am able to breath much better. ENT states he removed alot of tissue and bone spur from my nose during the procedure. I have sharp nasal pain and a headache since this AM. This is probably from the area being disturbed removing the splints. I was instructed that I should pass some more scabbing from my turbinates as they heal and I can't swim for another week. I am advised to avoid heavy activity as it may cause bleeding in my sinus.

Hopefully, tonight will be my first night of sleep since last week.

I had a bad headache when they removed the sutures from my nose, took some pain meds, went to bed, woke up good.

LOTS of scabbing and bloody boogers to come out! Keep up the saline spray up there to prevent it from drying out.

My face hurt all day after taking out the splints to the point of a migraine. It was mostly sharp bone pain. Today, I feel better but the nose is still pretty sensitive. My wife said she could see the scabs on the turbinates when looking with a light source.

When they pulled my sutures out there was a NASTY blood spurt! Wouldn't stop bleeding for a while, it was the worst nose bleed I've ever had x 10.
