Quoted: I don't think guys holding the line were going to have a fun time in those opening minutes of WW3 View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: My old nemesis, the Soviet T72 This was our main enemy during the cold war even though the T80 was in full service and was a better tank (and the same technological generation as the Abrams). We were definitely going to meet the T80 but there were a zillion times more T72s built and they were used by far more countries. The Abrams completely overmatched all versions of the T72 back then The base tank was easy to identify, but so many versions had explosive reactive armor that eventually it became really hard to tell what model you were looking at https://21stcenturyasianarmsrace.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/russian-t-72-v4.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/3281/5858243975_3586168360_b.jpg There was even a version called the Dolly Parton, because of those two tig ol bitties on the front of the turret face https://img.ifunny.co/images/eb1c040d76972d091cc0d3e8a09c1f19c4b504e7e7eac796dbe3916fe5e969a2_1.jpg https://www.overtdefense.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/T-72B1-Modernized-Nicaragua-17-1.jpg Add in modernization programs and changes in ERA design, and sometimes you had no fucking idea what you were looking at other than you knew it was Russian https://phototass2.cdnvideo.ru/width/1200_4ce85301/tass/m2/en/uploads/i/20210301/1304695.jpg https://nationalinterest.org/sites/default/files/styles/desktop__1260_/public/main_images/army2016demo-038_1.jpg?itok=gkO0RU5l Turret would still pop off if you hit it, export models were crap, doubt the "real" versions were much better. The Soviets figured that the T72 was heavily armored enough that its peers could not penetrate the armor from the front, and the advantages of the autoloader were worth the trade off to crew safety. That all changed for the worse when the T72 was capable of being penetrated by our next generation of MBTs. The T64 was the more complicated and advanced precursor to the T72 and so the T72 interited the same problem because it used the T64 style autoloader. You can easily google how many T64s lost their turrets in the Ukrainian war and T72s in the Gulf War I look at it more from the Chieftain and Challenger perspective then the M60 and M1 perspective but either way armor on armor in the 70's/80's the commies would have been fucked long distance in a fulda gap scenario but raw numbers would have carried them forward and IMO it would have gone chemical first then theater nuclear. Hey! My man knows the Fulda Gap (and all it's problems for NATO) Back in the day the FM100 series on Soviet doctrine stated that 25% of their artillery rounds were expected to be chemical . I used to be the NBC NCO for my platoon, and did a ton of tactics traning and VID training for my platoon and my company. IIRC the prepatory bombardment against a NATO tank company defensive position in the Fulda was 1000 rounds...before any of their tanks even showed up to start shooting Agreed on the distance gunnery advantage the West had over them overall, but our typical engagement range was expected to be short and sweet in Germany...500 fucking yards On top of that the Sovs really liked the rolling artillery HE+Smoke barrage right in front of their armored spearhead which basically meant you couldn't effectively shoot until the smoke cleared, so whoever was getting the most attention from them during the initial assault was going to have a bad day. I also read we were expected to be outnumbered 14 to 1 in the Fulda Gap...so I mostly didn't want to be there and was glad that my unit would have been part of ReForGer and probably not seen the initial opening shots Sorry, but it looks like AJ was going to have to hold the line til we got there I was never stationed in one of those areas, however, one of my favorite sergeants was in Korea. His battalion was tasked with holding one intersection for 5 minutes if the Norks every came across the DMZ. FIVE MINUTES 100 lost per minute. I don't think guys holding the line were going to have a fun time in those opening minutes of WW3 Nope It really opened my eyes to the possibilities for being nothing more than a speed bump to advancing armor |

I wasn't using it anyway though since I've moved over to the modbuttons for my go to rifles, so I figured why not The A3 was my first laser and it's been whored out on so many rifles I've lost track, but it's really useful as a tempory laser for new setups til I decide what I want to do |

Quoted: Page 80, Soviet T80 MBT https://preview.redd.it/tdvlwqusow821.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=579f3f5b5f8a1673004b4b582a666c895f107d1d So the Soviets studied the Abrams and the Lycoming ATG1500 turbine engine quite extensively and decided to follow our lead and use a jet engine as their new tanks powerplant as well. You may recognize the AGT1500 from the famous Huey helicopter, a reliable and proven engine. Some guy decided to cram it into a tank...and that dude was right. It worked amazingly well, but when the Russians tried it they fucked up miserably Yes, that Huey https://coffeeordie.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/UH-1D_helicopters_in_Vietnam_1966-scaled.jpg We had quietly reorganized a large part of our LogPac around the insatiable fuel consumption of the Abrams and that Huey engine, but the Soviets had not. When they deployed the T80 in the first Chechan war they got caught with their pants down as tanks ran out of fuel in overwatch positions and were unable to be resupplied due to Red Dawn guerilla warfare conducted by the rebels (Remember that Merkava that has a fuel efficient diesel and a large ass rear compartment that let it sit on overwatch for extended time? Yeah, no...the T80 can't do that ). In many instances they got massacred despite the overwhelming technical superiority of the T80 (insert Nelson=HaHa) They got bit so bad they swore off the turbine forever. Like forever and ever Kind of a shame, but also a good thing for us. The T80 was no joke and was a credible threat to the Abrams after they developed their own depleted uranium ammo. I never looked forward to locking horns with it. The Operational Manuever Group was an 'elite' set of units that had the best of the best that the Soviets could offer, kind of like our Cav units. We would have probably had our work cut out for us tangling with the T80 back in the day Still one of my all time favorite looking tanks https://www.armyrecognition.com/images/stories/east_europe/russia/main_battle_tank/t-80bv/T-80BV_main_battle_tank_Russia_Russian_army_defense_industry_military_equipment_640_001.jpg https://www.army-technology.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2000/04/Image-2-T-80U-Main-Battle-Tank.jpg View Quote I enjoy these nuggets of tank info. |
