I lived in Vermont for about a year, in 1975 or almost 50 years ago. Small town outside of Bennington called shaftsbury . Very primitive up in there, hard winters and decent people. I was up in the green mountain national forest. I liked it quite a bit.
Now? I've only traveled through a few times and it always reminds me of Austin or Boulder CO……it seems to have become a liberal mecca and tons of LGBTQ shit going on….for whatever that's worth. |

The wife does travel nursing and was in Middlebury from February until end of July of this year. I went about once a month to see her on the week's when she wasn't flying home.
Vermont is really nice. Super friendly people. The area she stayed at was really rural. We talked a few times about possibly retiring there. One thing that struck me was all the Marijuana dispensaries. And there were quite a few people we came into contact with that absolutely reeked of weed. Vermont is a beautiful state. |

gorgeous country. Very liberal. Historically in a "you do you" kind of way but recently has become more "you do as I say" recently passed some gun/mag bans after years of being one of the most gun friendly states

It was very high on my list of places to move to when I retire. My brother lives in the state now, and it is gorgeous. Mountains, creeks and streams, lots of things too do outdoors. Burlington used to be a super cool City to visit (until it became overrun with homeless people and other assorted human trash).
I completely lost all respect for Vermont during covid, when they went even more crazy than New York State did. At that point I decided that Vermont was off the list. Right now New Hampshire is at the top of the list, as it is very similar to Vermont but not nearly as far left. I think this photo does a good job of explaining what I mean. This is from the 2016 Trump/Clinton election. You can see that New York is a very red state, but that it is ruled by a few cancerous tumors like New York, Buffalo, Ithaca, etc. But for Vermont is actually a blue state. Almost every election Precinct in the state went for Hillary.  |

I have lived in VT since 1985. A lot has changed over the years. As far as focus on firearms we have lost some ground...bumpfire stocks are prohibited, mag limits in certain cases (simple is 10 rds rifle and 15 rds pistol, but there are some exceptions with a grandfather), 72 hour waiting period (even if you already own guns), and mandatory background checks for firearms transfers. There area pending court cases for some of these issues.
Once you get past those taxes took a hell of hike this year. We went up about $1800.00 and are now over $10k. Housing and land is not cheap. I have not taken a look outside of the area as I am not in a position to think about moving. Maybe take a look at NH. Unfortunately, many are coming to the area, and they bring change that isn't needed. Otherwise Vermont is a beautiful state and there is a lot here. Mike |

Was born there and have lots of family there. Visit several times a year.
COVID ruined the state as tons moved to there to work remotely. All liberal assholes from NY, Massachusetts, Connecticut, etc. Housing market is ridiculous. Way more violent now than I ever remember. Burlington used to be safe but quirky, now there’s tons of violent homeless, hard drugs, break-ins, etc. Perfect example of how Liberals ruin everything. |

Vermont is a beautiful state with a rich history, outdoor activities that'd fill a lifetime, genuinely kind helpful neighbors and low crime.
However, the politics are left of the left and that isn't going to change. It's the state that had gay marriage before it was cool and there isn't an office they wouldn't elect Bernie Sanders to. If you have fuck you money or a remote job you can buy a nice house in the absolute middle of no where and never interact with anyone outside of the occasional run to a general store while enjoying some of the most beautiful country Earth and never hearing or seeing another soul. Otherwise, just go with NH. It's basically the same but with lower taxes, more freedom and cheaper booze. You can open carry without a seat belt on as you drive through a liquor store helpfully placed at an interstate rest stop. It's like the other 49 states aren't even trying to keep up. |

I lived in Vermont from 2003-2014, it isn't what it used to be. Gun laws are crap now, they're trying hard to be worse than California as far as taxes and government. It has always been liberal, but back when liberal was more "libertarian" not commie socialist.

It was in my list of places to explore for retirement. Was.
1. Mag capacity limits set at 15 for handgun and 10 for rifle. 2. Red flag laws. 3. 72 hour waiting period for all firearms purchases. 4. No private sales. 5. While I’m not into them, I look sideways at bump stock bans… Including Vermont’s ban. 6. It appears they haven’t met a tax they don’t like, especially when it comes to property taxes. 7. They went beyond fill retard during Covid. New Hampshire looks like a better option for me. It’s on the list of the girlfriend ends up working in Boston. |

The cities are almost completely separate from rural VT. The majority or folks outside of the cities are as laid back as can be and no different than other rural areas. Sure you see a rainbow flag or sticker on a car here and there but they certainly aren't that prevalent atleast in my area (Western VT between Rutland and Bennington. You are just as likely to see a rebel flag as a rainbow flag lol
Same with hippies there is a striking difference between stupid hemp wearing college kids and the couple down the road that we would consider "crunchy" (like granola crunchy) but they farm, hunt, fish, shoot guns and drive pickups. |

Born there, lived the first 43 years of my life there, and my family goes back in the state at least 6 generations. Absolutely beautiful state with a rich history but it's turned into a cesspool of liberalism and political correctness. Taxes are though the roof, housing is outrageous due to transplants and vacation homes, and good paying jobs are few and far between. I moved in 2015 and will go back occasionally to visit friends and family, but I'll never live in the state again.
It's due to what I refer to as the Ben & Jerry's Effect. Vermont has always been kind of a "You do you're thing, I'll do my thing and as long as the two don't interfere with each other, everything is good" The problem is that attitude, post 1960's, attracted a bunch of trust fund hippies, like Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield, from New York and Connecticut, who brought their mindsets with them. Keep in mind, Vermont was a solidly red state until Bill Clinton. |
