Yeah the new grille is ridiculous. Don't know WTF they're thinking.
|
|
Yeah I've seen it. It's odd to me too, and I've owned BMWs for over 25 years

I like it. The kidneys are a throw back to the older BMWs with the vertical kidney grills.

Based on a comment made this week by the lead BMW designer - they know its falling flat. His statement was that they are trying to:
1. Differentiate from a crowded Euro design market 2. Bungled a partial denial that it was made to appeal to the Chinese market I think its a bold feeler for a new brand direction, but they've had more pushback than they expected. They assume that buyers don't approve of change initially owing to brand current-design loyalists, but eventually like the newer direction and see it as progressive. I think they went too far and believe they are starting to wonder. |

The trick is - that BMW has repeatedly taken what was seen as edgy and risky design changes - and succeeded. The (Chris) "Bangle Butt" trunk design that flowed to most cars. People derided it at first. The accepted it and then it was seen a normative.
Flame surfacing. I think Bangle had a hand in that two. Cheesed off a LOT of the faithful. Hated it - especially after the successful E46. People roasted BMW for it. Then people accepted it. There are more examples. BMW is not design-deaf and I'm 1,000% certain they trialed the design past focus groups in major markets. Probably a lot. If you stand still - you will lose new buyer market share. Its tough when your buyers don't want you to leave your design DNA - that other competitors are less constrained by. Porsche however does not make radical departures - other than SUVs. |

Did BMW collaborate with the Chevy Silverado design team on that crap?

BMW owners when new models come out: This is hideous. What happened to my favorite car.
BMW owners after they still buy it: This is the best BMW ever made. BMW owners after 3 years of ownership: Well the engine blew up after 50k miles and every single electronic in the cabin failed twice, but it was such a great car. Better go look at the new one so I can get my money's worth again. Repeat cycle. |

I was blessed to have a beautiful E46 way back, and never had any issues, but I recall reading about lots of folks commenting on too many plastic parts in the cooling system. Not sure what the actual issues were, if any. |

The Lexus "Predator" grill would actually look good compared to that.

I'm going to hold out my final judgement for when I see one in person, but it's not looking good. I'm sure it'll be a blast to drive, but I think the designers went overboard with trying to be bold.

Dont think it looks horrible,
but the question I have, is are they still making engines that over heat, burn oil, kill gaskets and turbo? I always like seeing 100k vehicles coming of lease being sold for around 20 grand, almost as must as financed 100k vehicles coming to market for sub 10k. |

I'll be in the market again later this year, was intending to go for the '21 M3. But then the rumint on the new M3/4 and 4 series grilles started. I was hoping it wouldn't be so bad once revealed, but it's fucking horrible.

I would not own a car without a dip stick to confirm oil level and see how dark the oil is, unless it was a pure electric vehicle.

It looks like a bmw and a mustang had a baby that was subsequently kidnapped by a pair of Lexus’s and brainwashed into having grill reassignment surgery

Super ugly. For a time all the car manufacturers were trying to have the grills "smile". I hated that, and this is worse.
