Actually just caught part of it.....the climatic battle with the Ewoks and their quaint forest technology.
Sweet Lord! It’s bad. I don’t know where to start. Special effects are bad. The tiny aborigines are bad yet they can beat up Storm Troopers. The acting is bad. It’s, it’s, what’s the word........terrible. |

I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when they pitched ewoks. I feel like they had to have been shoehorned in very near or after the script was written and there was some Hasbro or mattel executive sitting in the meetings, trying his damnedest to think up a mascot or cute character he could sell a billion of.

Now watch the throne room scene again. It's film perfection.
Everything that happened on the surface of the moon, except Luke turning himself in, should have been cut. Leia should never have been Luke's sister, that was stupid. |
|
Sexy Twi'lek and metal bikini Leiah... ROTJ's sins have long been forgiven.
|
|
The space battle and the throne room fight are amazing though.
Palpatine hamming it up is the best thing in Star Wars. |
|
The dialogue between Luke and Vader before Luke was handed over to the emperor is powerful stuff. One of my favorite scenes in the entire trilogy.
Throne room scene at the end is another. |

Compared to A New Hope and Empire, yeah, it's a shite cash grab.

You should watch the battle for endor if you want some cringe worthy tv. Bonus points is it has Wilford Brimley in it. The guy has looked 70 for the last 50 years.

I ignored the ewoks. If you ignore the ewoks the story is pretty good. The special effects have struggled with time, by the time they put it to digital the film had faded in the copy they used was faded in areas and the matting got BAD.
It was not as bad as Jar Jar or Peggy Sue, or the purple dress bitch. Empire is Best Star Wars and we all know it. Followed by Rouge One. |

Op's not wrong. The ewok battle scenes are dumb and full of plot holes.
Like the >just< happened to have piles of logs ready to trip the walkers? Or on vines to smash them? Or that armored troopers could be taken down by thrown stones and swung sticks? And do these preps close to the back entrance without being noticed. Cause they sure as hell didn't set them up in minutes. Rest of movie was decent. |
|
AFAIAC, there are three movies: star wars, empire strikes back, return of the jedi. Numbers 1,2,3. About a year ago I called family video looking for one of the three. The girl said part 1, 2 or 3? I probably said part 2 and she rattled off the name of one of the later movies.
Took us a bit to figure out I assumed the movies went in order but #1 became 4 and 2 became 5. |
|
The space battle scenes are still among the best though. They took the models against bluescreen to the limit in that movie.

The baby Yoda seems cool, but not cool enough to get me to watch.

You can't watch just one part, you gotta watch the whole thing man. It was a great movie, far better than today's crap...

Remember that stupid gopher from the last Indiana Jones movie? Yup, that was George again. |

The movies are Fun. Perfect, no. Fun, yes.
They are meant to be enjoyed by children. They are enjoyed by children and those of us with imagination. You want John Wick, change the channel. Do not fear the joy that Return brings to people. "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." - Yoda |

Yeah, worst of the original movies.
Especially as a sequel to Empire. |
|
Until Rogue One, RotJ had the best space battle. The fighters dueling above the Death Star and the run through the tunnels was amazing.

Darth Vader murders millions, then saves his kid, so all is forgiven and he gets to be a cool force ghost.

1 is great
2 is a masterpiece 3 is eh I know that's not the true episode order and I dont care. |

Supposedly the ewoks were originally supposed to be Wookees (ewoks ..... wookees ... get it).
But, a planet full of Wookees would have cost more in the costume budget and Lucas thought adorable little ewok action figures would sell better at Christmas time. Merchandising! A planet full of Wookees certainly sounds a lot more badass. |
|
It's uneven.
Jabba's Palace/barge has good and bad parts. Averages out to okay. Yoda dying was fine. The briefing was fine. Landing on the moon was good. The speeder chase was awesome. Ewok capture, C3PO as a god, and storytime are horrible. Luke and Leia talking was okay. Luke talking to Vader was very good. Everything in the Emperor's throne room was very good to excellent. The fight on the moon was good in parts but dumb in others. The space battle was excellent. Vader's redemption was excellent. Vader's funeral was excellent (original, not the special edition). Yub Nub was cringeworthy. |
|
It was pretty goofy but when Vader chucked the Emperor down the chute and saved Luke it made it all worth it. The theater went apeshit

It's not terrible, but it's a very uneven film. I think Lucas insisted on some elements (Ewoks, the sister thing, the weak comedy, Luke emoting like a wooden Indian) and those turned out badly. The throne room scenes are really good and the Emperor's performance is great. The space battle is epic. Unfortunately, Lucas just isn't very good at directing and his ego got the best of him.
Star Wars (the original) would have sucked badly but for Marcia Lucas' editing. |

My favorite is the Star Wars Christmas Special.
Wookie porn, Bea Arthur and Jefferson Starship. Happy Life Day, gang. |

Quoted: 1 is great 2 is a masterpiece 3 is eh I know that's not the true episode order and I dont care. View Quote That's not far from the mark. ROTJ could have been so much better, but the ewoks really kinda took a shit all over the movie. Lucas built up the final battle (including on the moon of Endor) to something that looked like it was going to be epic...and then made the Empire troops look like a middle-school paintball team. So much potential for that movie was wasted. |
|
Quoted: The space battle scenes are still among the best though. They took the models against bluescreen to the limit in that movie. View Quote The use of models, when done very well, and maybe with some high-quality CGI to touch things up, just blows away pure CGI-fests, IMO. So much better, but I suspect also comparatively very difficult and expensive. Pure CGI still in most cases makes it look like I'm watching a cartoon. |
