Chickens are fed and watered, dog is walked for the morning, laundry is done, meds are taken.

Only thing left on the plate today is getting my ears lowered. Will probably also stop by the grandparents, considering their Monday, and take care of them for a bit.

Currently? Only six. We've had as many as 20, but 2018 was a rough year, specifically May. Predators got in one night and killed five birds. The heat that year took another three. The coldsnap in January had already taken two.

Yeah. There's debate if we want to restock the flock of normal-sized birds or just stick with game hens. The state fair being closed to anyone not competing this year really put a damper on getting more chickens.

Don't you have a feed store that sells chicks?

Yeah, in April.

And not really. Don't buy the prize birds, and you can get three birds for ten, easily, if you buy a rooster with them. Most people don't want one because they don't want to deal with an aggressive roo when collecting eggs.

Fuck, I'll make a deal for five or six birds for $20 and take the roo. You hold him upside-down by his feet once and he gets the picture of who is boss

And with being close to the river, I've had now-passed roosters kill snakes and fuck up other critters what have tried to fuck with their hens, including one game rooster winning a fight with a juvenile cottonmouth. There was a fresh apple in their pen every day for a week for that one.

Definitely don't have the predator problem with snakes.  That's pretty cool they protect the flock that well.

Hens will lay no matter what, fertilized eggs need the rooster.

Get you some ameracaunas. They lay pastel blue and green eggs. Rhode Island Reds are your old reliables as far as egg production, and Buff Orpingtons are pretty good, too.

For a rooster, get yourself a little Cochin Bantam

He'll be smaller than the hens, and have fluffy feet, but the one we had, he was a fucking riot bossing these hens bigger than him around

Little more concerned with the coyotes right now.

They drug my deer carcass from the woods and it's currently in my back yard.
