The only thing I can think happened was the hammer caught on the seat as I was getting in the truck and pulled part way back and let go before it caught the lock and wham bam thank ya mam. I carry 1 in the pipe with the hammer shut and the primer was very clearly struck so its the only thing that I can assume happened. 1911 if anyone has any other ideas?

Don't feel bad, they've happened to me a few times

Why do you carry with hammer down? It’s designed for the opposite, and now you know why.
So did you clean up the brown stains before you took the picture......or cut up another pair of paints (might have been shorts)....
Was the truck okay? Any injures besides your pride occur? |
Whoa, that sucks. How's the truck seat look?
Dig out the bullet? |

1911 with hammer down on a loaded chamber?
Now you know why not to |

1911 one in the chamber with the hammer down? So, thumb safety off?
This is why you carry a 1911 cocked & locked.
Glad (hopefully) no one was hurt. |
Not super familiar with the 1911A1 design but will the primer be struck if the trigger isn't pulled. And is there a grip safety?
IWB carry? Weird there's not a lot more scoring from the muzzle blast. Did you get hurt? Where did the round go?

Firing pin spring in place?
Half cock notch functional? Grip safety functional? Normally 1911 is cocked and locked, why was it not being carried this way? |

One in the tube with hammer down? Just get a glock, the 1911 is too much for you
Do you have a trigger stop screw that limits overtravel ? Is it set too deep?
Seen a lot of people crank down and it keeps the half cock notch from engaging. So it could have been pull past the safety notch but not to full cock and had enough steam to set off a primer. I wont get into cocked and locked or empty chamber is the only safe wat to carry a 1911 |

+1 ETA: Maybe it is possible... just seems unlikely. |
A 1911 is meant to be carried cocked and locked. I've been carrying a 1911 for about 30 years. That's the way JMB, hallowed be his name, meant for it to be.
My brother carried a 1911 with a round chambered and hammer down until he had a ND. Now he's a believer of Condition 1. |
Gonna have to echo the hammer down on a round confusion. It seems like you weren't hurt, very happy to hear that.

I didn't know hammer down with a round in the chamber was a thing until today
Why in the world would you carry a 1911 hammer down on a hot pipe? It has a manual safety, and a grip safety. It was designed that way for a reason. Go ahead and carry a SA revolver (on an empty chamber) if you want to carry hammer down.

Gun was designed for cocked and locked carry.
But you know better than JMB. Completely avoidable. |
