For that price you are going to get a 15 year old v6 4x4 Ford Explorer with a bad transmission.
Good news is a rebuild on those isn't terribly expensive. |

After a brief nationwide search, at 6k and your requirements…..
you’re in the 1999-2001 range for jeep cherokees with 150,000-230,000 miles. Probably similar range for other vehicle that meet your requirements. Not sure on the reliability one at that age and miles. I’d guess you should plan on some routine fixes. Attached File |

WK grand cherokee with AWD... mine did 202k without issues.
Late model XJ cherokee $6k might get you one that hasnt been messed around too much. |

One of my coworkers just bought a 90s Cherokee for $3k. That will leave you with plenty of money to fix all the broken stuff with your budget.

Last July I bought a 96 K3500 for $1900.
I’ve put about $500 in it. I’ll be putting another $500 in it this winter ( FPR and injectors to fix the 7.4 vortec hot start issues). After all that I still won’t hardly leave the county in it. At 150,000-200,000 miles, you are in the range for anything to start to go catastrophically bad, tranny and or motor rebuilds, brake lines fails( fixed one on aforementioned truck last month) suspension gone to shit, etc. Be realistic with what you mean by reliable. Do you need it to start everytime so you can drive 5 miles to work? Beater with a heater might be an ok option if you’re ok with fixing your own shit. If you’re putting 25+ miles daily on a vehicle then yeah, as has already been said, you will have to increase your budget up to about 15k in my opinion. |

2000-2006 full-size GM SUV with the 5.3 V8. Tahoe/Suburban /Yukon/Yukon XL
My 2001 Suburban has 289k miles, is rusting to shit, but still has the original powertrain and runs just like it should. |

While reliable and 6k don't go together well, reliable and 6k Jeep Cherokee
A Toyota pickup fails in cab room, you can get 4 people in one, not 4 adult people. You probably could get 4 in a quad cab, but that would be a Tacoma. You will have a decently hard time finding a 4x4 Tacoma for 6k. |

6K does not buy much these days. I'm looking for a car for my daughter and it seems like 11k minimum to buy something decent.

You can fix almost everything yourself. I’m working on a ‘96 Suburban right now. I’m going to sell it to someone like you, as soon as I can get it running right. 95-2010 trucks are pretty simple to work on, but anything of that vintage is going to be a constant labor of love. |

My Z71 has 248K miles on it and just will not quit. I keep trying to get it to be unreliable so I can buy something new but it's so damn stubborn.
Here's one for literally $6K: https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/d/liberty-hill-2004-chevrolet-silverado/7374679108.html Buy a crew cab. Add a tool box. Get A/C serviced. /thread |

As someone else already explained, Any $6000 4x4, is going to be in the perfect range for catastrophic-expensive failures; and more importantly, constant legions of smaller issues. Doesn’t mean it can’t be done. It just takes dedication. |

look at Ford Expedition, I found a few 4x4 that seem to be priced well

Cherokee
Yukon Tahoe 20 years old or newer as long as the frame is still good. Just bought a 01 Yukon XL with a billion miles on it for $3500 It was for sale one day. Has rust and a few scrapes. All around a decent truck. |

Up your budget.
I have noticed the 2003-2006/7 Ford Expeditions going for around 4K with 150ish thousand miles. I was going to sell my 2003 Eddie Bauer figuring with the crazy car market I would do okay. Best offer I got was from CarMax for 2k. The thing is in excellent condition with low miles for it’s age. Mine has the two valve 5.4 that doesn’t have the severe spark plug problems. |

I know many have suggested a Jeep Cherokee, but let me offer another option:
Jeep XJ. |

In a related topic, I have $300 and I'm looking for a nice Rolex

Get a new base model bronco. Some people might find it a little bit small

I too miss the 90's, OP.
2021 says add 20K or more to your used vehicle price range. |

looking for car
needs to be roomy and comfortable good gas mileage $2K budget will be used to break Nürburgring track records. |
