Honestly nothing out there is going to beat the modularity or parts availability of a AR10 pattern rifle. Pick your manufacturer and enjoy.

In saying that I wish CZ would hurry up and release the Bren 2 in 7.62

Would love a FAL for nostalgia.

SCAR 17 is it's younger, lighter, more adaptable brother.

Can't go wrong with SR25 OR MWS, but to me, those are more DMR and less "battle rifle."

There is something to be said for magazines that hold more than 8 rounds...or magazines that are actually magazines.

thats' why I choose the mws because I can swap the barrel if needed.  it's standard 16" barrel if fine for a 'battle rifle' but if needed, I can swap out the barrel and turn it into a precision oriented platform

The MWS isnt really a 'quick change' barrel. You wont be swapping barrels in the field. Might as well have a different upper with dedicated optic to suit the need.

I have owned the following

M1A socom
M1a scout squad
M1a standard
Dsa stg58
Ptr91 a3s
Ptr91 gi-r
Windham 308
Lmt mws cqb 13.5

I currently own the M1a standard and lmt mws

Neither rifle has given me any issues, if I could only keep one it would be the LMT

ALL the M1A’s I have owned have been 100% the ptr 91 gi-r was 100% as well as the dsa fal. The windham and ptr a3s has occasional issues.

M1A's. Either with wood, or snythetic. Love 'em. I've had just about everything else. SCAR's are great too, but, I just love the M1A's action.

all you need is the barrel and correct key, takes less than 60 seconds but I get your point fully

Virtually any AR10 pattern rifle on the market is vastly superior to FALs, M14s, G3s, etc. in almost every way possible. And a lot cheaper usually, if you're comparing quality to quality.

If you absolutely must have something besides an AR pattern, I guess a SCAR, though it's going to be thousands more and it won't do anything the AR can't. For what the base SCAR costs, you could build one hell of a nice AR10, and probably still have quite a bit left over to put towards some really nice glass.

The inherent accuracy, excellent iron sights, robustness, simplicity, and abundant supply and availability of USGI spare parts, inexpensive quality magazines, and accessories makes the M14 the obvious choice for me.

Find a used one with the 1913 rails, and they can sometimes be had for $1600-$1800. It's no precision DMR, but it's a damn fine battle rifle with an ACOG or LPVO.

I EBR’d my SOCOM16. Love it but can’t lift it LOL. I’ll still never part with it though.
For a rock solid affordable and accurate rifle I recommend  DPMS.
My GAP10 is more accurate than I will ever be.
I won’t shoot my Colt 901 because it is a lettered numbed 6#.

So my hillbilly answer is to buy the rifle that you will shoot the most
configuration (ergonomics for different folks)
and the rifle you won’t worry about shooting prone from a gravel pile.

SCARs suck ass.   They are a solution looking for a problem.  I would have sold it for scrap if it was mine to sell.
But what's a Navy SEAL's opinion on one?
"They're heavier than an M4 and they break, and the armorer never has any spare parts, and you can't fit your hair gel in the goddamn ugg boot stock!"

Breakage issues are worse than the M4's, but that's to be expected with a 308. Bolts last about as long as an M4's, which isn't bad considering it's a bigger cartridge in an undersized bolt, with a reduced firing schedule. The polymer bits tend to break more easily than they should, along with some of the hardware in the receiver, IIRC. Tradeoff for being an 8 pound battle rifle, IMO. Mags suck compared to 308 Pmags. As the MK20, they're reliable, light, and fairly accurate, but nowhere near as much so as a proper SR25 that isn't fucked by specs set by 'tarded Army brass. The M110 could have been so much more...

I want:

CZ BR

Some kind of 16” DMR’ish AR-10.

Budget is blown for this year though.

I like that patch.  Where'd you get it?

And I hope that 12lbs includes accessories and a loaded mag.  My shorter FAL with empty mag, light, and mount weighs under 10 lbs and it's definitely not a lightweight version (although one day my hiduminium lowers will turn into complete rifles; I'm hoping to get down to around 8lbs with mag before including accessories, at least for a rifle built on the fixed-stock lower).

Ammo is very common all over the place and can still be had at lower prices.  Surplus ammo is an option and its continued military use ensures that will continue to be the case.  It's not like it's a problem to use 7.62X51 for this sort of thing.  It'll do the job this class of rifle will ask of it.

None.

Unless you're a millionaire, the cost will be prohibitive if it's assumed you are going to train hard with it to develop real proficiency across a wide array of shooting scenarios and distances.

Everyone says they'll shoot thousands, but this quickly turns into barely a few hundred, and that gets reluctantly spread out over years.

Even handloading in these calibers can't come close to the trigger time you'll get with 5.56 or 7.6 TUBA 39 for the same ammunition layout.

And then you add on the higher cost of the gun.

I went through it, and decided I didn't need one anymore.  You might reach the same conclusion.

If you are collecting for historical purposes or want a keeper not a shooter, that's a totally different story.
View Quote
You don't need to be a millionaire to shot a decent amount with .308.  Get real.  Some of you guys act like this stuff is several bucks a round.  It's not as cheap as it used to be when surplus came at an awesome price, but you can still get ammo for a decent price if you buy surplus in bulk.  I think I paid 35 cents a round the last time I bought it in bulk.  43-44 cents last time I bought it in somewhat smaller quantities.  Not awesome, but far from terrible or "need to be a millionare" status.
