[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What Is The Strangest / Most Unexplainable Thing You've Seen or Heard In The Woods? (Page 4 of 6)

Does this count....reforger, outside of Mannheim FRG, I escorted a female MP on a desolate traffic control point into the woods, in the dead of a winter night so she could take a dump, I stepped away to give her some privacy and I swear I thought it was my dad taking a bad beer shit, of course these were the days when the army still issued c-rations |

It took me two years to discover that the noise I heard was a vixen scream. An hour after sunset as I was walking out of the woods, it howled at me and set my hair on end. Goto 1:37, and imagine that clear as a bell, ten feet off the trail and pointed at you in the black of night: |
| I was bear hunting in Potter County PA about 7/8 years ago. I didn't have time to do any scouting so I walked/still hunted all day. I was at the bottom of what we refer to as "the middle hill" and was very tired. I started hearing "wood knocks" just like on the bigfoot tv shows. I don't believe in bigfoot but I definitely head the noise. I was too tired to hike up the hill to see what was making the noise. I would love to know what makes that noise in nature. |

A buddy and I used to bowhunt a spot that was about an hour walk in the woods. I always liked that spot, about a 3 acre clearing with thick woods all around it, had hunted it several times over the years. It was one of those spots that was just so peaceful and as the sun would come up all sorts of critters would get out and about. Our stands were set up about 75yds apart.
That morning as light started coming on I immediately noticed oddly there wasn’t any noise.....no squirrels rustling, no birds, nothing but silence. As it started getting a bit lighter the silence started really getting to me, the feeling something was off started to set in. By the time it was daybreak the feeling we should not be there came over me, just a strong feeling that we should go. Shortly after that feeling set in I heard a rustling and saw my buddy heading for my stand at a pretty good stride. He looked about panicked when he made it to my stand. All he said was “I think we need to go”. That was good enough for me. We headed out and were about halfway back when about 75 yards behind us something big started crashing through the woods. Now these woods were thick and we couldn’t see shit, but whatever was tromping ass through the woods was breaking the hell out of branches, making no attempt of being sneaky, and moving directly towards us. We took off at a dead sprint and the whatever it was kept up staying far enough behind us we never could see it. We finally made it out of the woods into an open field and whatever was chasing behind us stopped and stayed just far enough in the woods we could see something big moving, but couldn’t see well enough to tell what it was. I couldn’t be paid enough to ever return to that spot. And that is my story of how I almost got eaten by an evil soul sucking demonic woods monster. |

Been alone a lot in woods generally I like it up to couple weeks.
About 12 years ago spending night in old cabin with 3 walls on naknek creek woke to brown bear tracks about 6 feet from my head. But 3 months ago I'm in the middle of nowhere. 2 hours after sunset I saw a light about half mile away. A ball orangeish in color. Skim the pines slowly. Then stopped for awhile . 20 secs maybe more. Go back the way it came. Stop again then zip back the original direction. So fast that it was gone in 2 secs. Never told anyone. But it's true. It did freak me out. |

Not supernatural or particularly creepy, but definitely odd.
I'm a patrol sergeant in a small rural police department in VA, a couple hours from D.C. The county that my town is in is very rural, has a ton of National Forest, and generally is patrolled by few deputies. I was eating dinner with my guys one night when I heard the sheriff's office get a call from some turkey hunters scouting a campsite way way back in National Forest. The hunters reported 300+ Hispanic men at a remote campsite with machetes, and bonfires. The turkey hunters stated that they were approached by members of the group and chased off. Now we only have jurisdiction in the county when requested by the sheriff's office, and this sounded interesting. So I called a deputy buddy and let him know we wanted to play if he wanted to request us. He obliged and I took one of my officers and left the other two in town. The sheriff's office gave us a location to stage at the bottom of the mountain and it took us about a half hour running hard to get there. The boss of the deputies had us wait there until additional deputies and a Forest Service Officer got there. While we were waiting, a pickup truck came down the mountain. We stopped it and it was one of the few residents who lived back there, coming off the mountain to find cell service to call us. He said the same thing. He heard a commotion up the mountain and went up to check. He said there looked to be over 300 Hispanic men. He said they were burning what looked like scaffolding or crosses, a bunch of them were fighting, and he heard gunshots. He said he was spotted and several of them came down, armed with machetes and bandanas covering their faces, and with broken English told him to gtfo. Now, we were all assuming an MS13 meetup. We had heard of them having large get togethers in rural areas, and I knew there to be a large number of them in Northern Virginia, less than 2 hours away. We just couldn't think of any other reason why that many Hispanic men would be carrying on like that, so far back in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. We considered maybe a large family party, but both the caller and the resident said they all looked to be in young (under 40) and there were no women or children. And then there was the whole bandana and machete thing. We finally assembled 7-8 deputies, the FSO, and us two town cops. Our plan was to drive to the bottom of the last campsite and proceed on foot. We rolled in heavy and sure enough at the end of the road were two young Hispanic men who didnt speak English, with machetes and bandanas guarding the entrance of the camp. We quickly detained them and pushed on, leaving a deputy with them. We soon came across the main body gaggled along the path. All of them with bandanas either covering their faces or around their necks, and some with machetes, many wearing orange shirts. None spoke English. I was in the lead with a deputy who I knew to be a good guy to have with you in bad situations. We decided to push through the gaggle and attempt to clear to the other side and attempt some form of control of the group. One of the deputies spoke enough Spanish to have them move to the sides of the path and raise their hands. We pushed on, dumping a deputy periodically to secure those we had passed. It was absolutely surreal moving up the path with hundreds of guys on either side of the path with their hands up glaring at us, as we scanned and watched for weapons (besides the machetes). None of them made a peep. Finally, when we were almost at the end we ran into a group that spoke English. A guy introduced himself as a pastor and said it was a church group. He said they take troubled young men into to woods for a wilderness adventure retreat and fellowship. Kind of like a corporate retreat, but for young Hispanic men. While the boss came up to parlay with the pastor I struck a conversation with the cook, a nice enough guy who spoke perfect English. He said that some of the initial group we encountered were gangbangers, MS13 and the like. It was pretty obvious from the facial tattoos I saw on some of them. It turns out they did have a permit to have a campout at this site, but neglected to tell the Forest Service how many would be back there, or what they would be doing. They said the bonfires were part of the experience, and the "fighting" was team-building exercises, the machetes were used by the senior members of the group (second year participants of the retreat) for bear defense, and the bandanas were sort of like team colors for each subgroup. The boss was satisfied with what he heard, and we headed back down the mountain, apologizing to people who didnt understand us anyway, for interrupting their event. Kind of anticlimactic, but it was one of the most surreal experiences I have had as a cop, and it was unbelievably unsettling moving through hundreds of people with torches and machetes with only a handful of officers, in the middle of nowhere. If they had wanted to harm us, we would have been dead before additional backup was even halfway there. |

In high school I had my car loaded with people as we were headed to a cast party after the last performance of the spring musical.
We got a little turned around as none of us were familiar with the area the house was located. It wasn't way out in the boonies but was in a hilly and wooded area. While slowly driving down a pitch black road after making what turned out to be a wrong turn, we saw an article of clothing in the street. As we slowly continued on we saw a couple more followed by a shoe. The road was too narrow to turn my boat of a car around so we pressed on deeper into the heavily wooded area untill we reached a dead end that luckily had a half ass circle at the end. As I mentioned, it was pitch black out. While I was swinging the car around my brights wre illuminating the surrounding tree line. Just as I was about to complete the turn around we see it. A fairly decent size group of people standing in the tree line staring at us. No fire, no vehicles, just people and I swear to God one of them was holding an ax. We stopped for a second and then got the hell out of there. The freakiest thing I have ever seen in my life. We were all convinced we narrowly escaped being killed in some satanic ritual. |

Quoted: This would freak the hell out of anybody. Not really a scary story but scared the shit out of myself. I was up camping with some coworkers and had a Springfield XD Tactical in my shoulder rig. We are sitting around the campfire early in the evening bullshitting and sucking down some beers. One of the guys brought his dog and all of a sudden she alerts, starts barking in one direction. We lit the woods up with every light available but saw nothing. We go back to sitting around the fire until pretty late, I had a pretty good beer buzz and head back to my tent. I set the Springy up by my head outside of my sleeping bag. A while later I was dead asleep and woken by something crunching and crashing in the trees. I roll over and my heart stops, just inches from my face are two bright green, glowing eyes. My heart rate hits about 10,000, my mouth goes dry and I am sure I'm going to die. For a moment I'm frozen in fear. Then I realize it's the rear night sights on my XD. Fuuuuuuuuck! In the morning we all had a good laugh at my expense. The crunching and crashing I heard in the middle of the night? A cow (we were on open rangeland) managed to slip and fall on the hill just outside of our camp. Probably what the dog had alerted on, funny thing though when it crashed down the hill the dog never made a sound. |

Back in the 90s I did a backpacking trip in Blodgett Canyon down in the Bitteroots. I had a fishing pole with me and on the second night when i settled in I just left it out by a tree. Around midnight or so, I heard the oddest sound, it didn't dawn on me at the time that it was a critter getting caught up in the fishing line and running about but thats what it was. It frankly scared the crap out of me. In the morning when I got up there was fishing line all over the place. |

I went for a walk in the woods late one morning behind my house sometime in the late 80s. The area was basically a rectangle, maybe 1x2 miles, and was encompassed by a road. It was not a usual direction for me for a hike, and not an area that I'd walked through before. I'd probably made it an hour in and decided to reverse direction and head back home. I came to a road, one that I had not crossed. Somehow, I was on the -OTHER- side of the road. I had to follow it around and back to my house. I still can't explain what happened. No drugs involved.

I don't believe the "pastor" for one second. I think your boss swallowed the story because you guys were too small a group to take on 300 MS13ers with machetes. He knew you guys could shoot plenty of them, but not all of them, and if it turned into a confrontation then you guys would not have survived. |

About 20 years ago I went camping alone up in the Cohutta Wilderness area something I used to do quite often. At the time of the release of the Blair Witch Project, people (me included) weren't 100% sure if it was fake until after the credits rolled after the movie ended. Still, it was good enough to make you not want to go camping for a while but I took this fear as an invitation. I put on my pack and head about 7 miles in from the parking area. I find a nice clearing and set up camp All I have for protection is a 10 round .22 revolver and a Buck knife. The first evening comes and goes like all the others but with that something extra, thinking there's going to be a few stacks of piled up rocks next to my tent. No such thing happened of course. Night 2. Everything is cool until about 0300. I get woken up by this noise that sounded just like 20-30 grade school kids milling around. No screaming, just taking but some with excitement in their voices. It wasn't adult voices, the range was too high. It sounded like they were no more than 60 feet from my camp but I couldn't see anything at all, just voices. It was dark out of course and my heart is going 90 miles to nothing. I don't remember picking up the pistol but I realized it was in my hand. "Who's there goddammit? Show your self!" Nothing, the talking continues. "I'm going to start shooting now because it's 3AM and aint nobody should be out here talking" Dumped 6 rounds in the direction of the talking keeping 4 just in case. It was as if I interrupted several conversation and the talking wound down completely after 10 minutes. I could have sworn I heard "what an asshole" from somebody but I didn't care. Yep, no more sleeping that night. I reloaded, made a fire, and drank the bourbon I brought. Won't be forgetting that in this lifetime I can assure you. |

| When we first moved to SE Ohio my wife and I were taking a walk down the country road we live on. We heard very loud roars from far away. I remarked to my wife that it sounded like a lion. I couldn't think of any creature native to the area that could make those sounds. Turn's out it was a lion. Somebody on the upper road had a high fenced facility where he kept a number of exotic species, including lions. Highway crews that picked up dead deer from the roads down here would drop them off up there and he'd feed them to the big cats he had. |

I've told this story on here before, but the last time I was kind of creeped out was when I was hiking the Ozark Trail through Mark Twain National Forrest. We weren't in the middle of no where, but we were a ways away from a trail head. As we're walking along a family of devout Muslims were coming the other way. The dad was wearing nice clothes that looked like Cleric clothes, the mom was in a full burka, and a daughter that was wearing dirty clothes. No backpacks, no canteens, nothing else. When we walked past them, the Dad looked at me like he was PISSED about something, but kept on walking. When my father and I rounded a curve my dad looked back at me like WTF? I mean, I guess they could have been out there on a day hike - that's what we were doing, after all. But they were certainly not dressed for a hike. It was weird. |

Last year, first day of rifle deer season. I get to the stand before sunup and I'm standing there catching my breath before I get in the stand, and I hear something running at full-speed right at me. As I'm facing dead ahead, it is at 1 o'clock and Wide-Open Throttle. I'd spooked a deer many times during bow season in the same area so I'm wondering if this is it.
I look in the direction of Mr. Leafcruncher, and this red fox who is hauling ace sees me at about ten feet out. He does the doggie 'plant both front feet straight down and splay both rear feet out in an attempt to drop anchor' maneuver and slides on the leaves to within six feet of me. Stops, we stare at each other for about ten seconds, and he turns and bolts back the way he came. Fully enamored with having seen that, I tied my rifle to the hangline and let go, and it promptly falls over onto it's scope, on a rock. So much for sighting that in...I'd tied the knot to a line that didn't run through the sling. Climb the tree anyway, freeze my butt off. After five hours in the stand and seeing NOTHING, I decide to get my earmuffs outta the bag. I turn, dig 'em out, put 'em on, and thnk, "Yeah, that's nice" and then I hear a deer chuff. I look up in time to see the biggest buck I've ever seen in the woods....twenty yards away at 2 o'clock, running away. I see deer ass, and antlers sticking WAY out. I'd looked around to see if anything was there before I got my earmuffs, including under the stand, and NOTHING. Thirty seconds later....BANG. After another thirty....BANG. And there goes the deer I wouldn't have been able to hit, anyway. Neighbor had shot, missed, got out of the stand and chased it on foot and nailed it. |

Nothing incredibly strange here but I've had some pretty fun experiences with animals not being aware. A lot of times while hunting and hiking I'll sit and rest where I can somewhat conceal myself and watch a trail or clearing. Standard stuff. I've had a coyote come down a trail I was sitting near and not even see me until he was about to run into me.. When I finally caught his eye he stopped right in his tracks, bounced backwards and flipped around like a cartoon character, and ran off the other way Had a rabbit come shuffling down a log I was sitting on, not seeing me at all until he was about to run into me.. he stopped dead cold and sat next to me on the log. I stayed motionless as well. I sat next to this rabbit for probably 10 minutes before I finally got tired of not moving, shifted a bit and he was gone Had a chipmunk run up my leg and sit on my knee, and proceed to eat his mouth full of seeds It's always surprising to me how much action is going on in the woods once you stop making noise and allow the animals to settle down I was walking down a trail on my property and out of the edge of my vision I caught sight of motion and looked up to see a squirrel about 50' away coming at me at a dead run. Fucker had eyes on me and was booking with his tail up over his back. All kinds of shit was running through my head, rabies, infected, vampire squirrel, but it was so surreal and happened so quick I didn't even react. Lil bugger ran up to me and ran up my pants leg right up to my thigh and stopped, panting for breath hugging my leg as flat to it as he could get. I remember feeling how warm he was and how I could feel his breathing. After a few seconds he grained his head up over his back and started looking into a tree about 100' or so away. At this point I'm thinking he's drunk on fermented fruit, pumpkins or apples or something. I looked back to the tree just in time to see something drop and it's wings open up, it was a Cooper's hawk wanting to make this lil guy his breakfast. The hawk swooped towards me and for a second I thought he was either going to land on me or attack the squirrel, but he pulled up and landed on a branch about 10' up about 20' away. The squirrel was chittering and growling and the hawk is bobbing his head around looking at me like, hey bro, can you spare that squirrel? I was just dumbfounded and in awe of what was happening and was going to just let things play out until my squirrel decided he would be better off under the tail of my jacket. I wasn't having none of that and swatted him off and watched that hawk chase him off through the woods. That squirrel was smart too and took to running under every vine, sticker bush branch and twig he could while trying to get away. |

Quoted: Everyone needs to experience that sound...in a safe way of course. Friends and I used to do long range shooting in an abandoned strip mine. We'd communicate by hand held cb radios--long time ago. There was this huge berm of dirt and rock way out there. We'd put the target next to and past the berm so the one down range could observe it with binoculars while safe. I go down range change the target and sit behind the berm. Called range hot. When I heard the bullet I didn't know what it was--then "BOOM"! Before that someone could have shot at me with a suppressed rifle and I probably wouldn't have know what was happening. I remember thinking Damn, that's nothing like the movies. |

So what went down took place over the course of two nights in the fall of 2012. I am a police officer for a small college in Virginia with a 4 lane highway to the front of the college, to the back of the college there is 85 wooded-brush covered land that the college owns, past that is a rural rout, and passed that is the Clinch Mountain, and some 27,000 acres of the Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Surrounding the management area is thousands upon thousands of undeveloped private land. Clinch Mountain is basically a tall ridge line that runs for miles and miles, I think all the way to Tennessee. I can look from campus at times in the spring and fall and see the snow capped mountain in the background while it is still green on campus...... Common out west, not so much in the east. Anyway.... One night after having made my nightly patrol of the campus, I had made my way back down to the lower end... The school is laid out in that there are two large buildings and the National Guard armory on the lower level on the highway side.... up top, there are five buildings that make up the "main campus" on top of the hill.... The road then circles around to a lower section on the back side... There is one brick building and a couple of ball fields, etc... Our office was in that brick building on the lower end/back side of campus... No dorms...No housing.... No person on campus after Midnight. Usually, at around 3:00am, I would come back down to the office and eat my lunch and rest my legs...... Place holder.... When you work midnight shift completely alone, your eyes tend to get heavy..... I have fallen asleep at work... On the first night after I had made my initial rounds and had lunch, I was sitting at the desk with my eyes crossing.... I honestly don't know if I actually fell asleep in the chair or I was just close to it, but at some point I heard way off in the distance this mournful wailing sound.... Think of hearing a train horn on a quite night, or more to the point an old air raid siren..... It was similar to that but it was an animal.... I remember smiling as I rose up out of the chair because I thought that I had dreamt it. I got in the patrol vehicle and drove all over campus, shining my spot light but never saw anything. The next night was the same situation... Sitting in the same office, only this time I was 100% wide awake.... I was reading something online when absolutely out of the blue this thing roared.... It started out very base, like thunder... Midway through there was a definite growl sound, and then it tapered to a much higher pitch at the end. It sounded like it was right outside the office but it had the same effect as if you were in a quite house and a sudden thunder boom occurred... The kind that jars you and shakes the house.... I didn't shake the building exactly, not like thunder would but I could feel the vibration from it. It had a stunning effect on me.. I drew up into the office chair out of pure instinct and that's where I stayed for several seconds... Think how a deer will sometimes drop down below the arrow that was fired at it... That's kinda what I did.... I guess the instinct was to make myself small..... It was absolutely clear that I could not fend it off. I had my pistol on me, we had a rifle and shotgun in the office and none of that entered my mind... I froze up completely. About 30 seconds to a minute later, I hear it off in the distance again, way off, like the night before, and just like the night before, it was the same mournful sound.... At that point I was able to move again... I patrolled campus again, but never saw it and never heard it again. It was not a bear, and I did not chase it in my pajamas. I've done a protection detail for the President and posted that here, I've been called up for the war but our orders were eventually cut after several months, I've caught a live copperhead, I've been on crazy police calls when I worked the road, hell, I've seen some things go down at the college. I've done a lot of things and had a lot of things happen in my 42 years, but this took the cake. I give all of you my word that it happened and it happened exactly how I said it did. |

Riiiiiiiggghhhhttttt... and that's why they had two guys armed with machetes as gate guards, and that's why they chased people away with machetes and threats of GTFO.... I don't believe the "pastor" for one second. I think your boss swallowed the story because you guys were too small a group to take on 300 MS13ers with machetes. He knew you guys could shoot plenty of them, but not all of them, and if it turned into a confrontation then you guys would not have survived. Quoted:
I don't believe the "pastor" for one second. I think your boss swallowed the story because you guys were too small a group to take on 300 MS13ers with machetes. He knew you guys could shoot plenty of them, but not all of them, and if it turned into a confrontation then you guys would not have survived. But it wasn't my rodeo. I was just along for the ride. |

Yep, wtf was he thinking going up against a group of 300+ armed and assumed hostile (they’d already chased away several groups) young men? And y’all had what maybe 12 people? If they had wanted to take issue with your presence there, there wouldn’t have been much y’all could have done about it. Quoted:

Weird but true story.
This happened on Hwy. 36 in S.E. Wisconsin. 8 or so years ago. The area is suburban and very well maintained. I had an opportunity to work some O.T. on a hot job on a Friday night. The rule was, you had to have 4 hours between the end of your end of your regular shift. Then you could work the overtime. It was summer and light out so I took my Suzuki. About a quarter of a mile was my exit ramp. I slowed down to about 45 mph, and 100 feet ahead the biggest blackest dog ran right in front of me and jumped the ditch to my right. As I passed the beast was staring at me crouched down like he was ready to pounce. BLACK EYES with a don't fuck with me look. It was no dog it was a large wolf ! The area was 10 miles from the center of Milwaukee. NOT an area for wolves. But oddly enough, there was a wolf sanctuary about 1 mile away from where I was. Dumb place for one, but it was there for years and years. I got to work and my co worker was a bear hunter ad an avid outdoorsman. I told him because I still couldn't believe it. His explanation... The sanctuary wolves would call in wild wolves when they howled at night. And it cold be as far away as 30 miles out. I guess, maybe. But I still don't know. |

Posted this one before but it's by far the creepiest experience I've had in the woods. From time to time my dad would tell a story about when he was out bowhunting on the public land that borders our land. We have 40acres but the public land next to us is 10k+ acres of county and federal land. You hardly ever see another soul up there, especially during bow season. Some areas immediately off the road get a little hunting pressure gun season but that's it. He was way, WAY back along the river creeping through the woods before daylight hours to find a spot to sit. As the sun started to come up he saw movement ahead. At the time he thought it was a deer moving its head back and forth. He sat still for quite some time watching it and quickly realized it couldn't be a deer as it was swaying back and forth for 15+ minutes. When it was finally light enough to see he realized it was something hanging from the tree. He walked over and found a black cat strung up in a perfect hangmans noose by it's neck. Touching it revealed the joints to still be somewhat limp. Needless to say he unassed the area immediately, completely bewildered as to what the fuck he just encountered as the nearest road or house was miles away though pretty thick woods and swamp. Many years later(15+) we were up bowhunting in the same area. Not having any luck all week long I decided I was going to try a new spot. I packed my little pack-n-stack ladder stand on my back and headed out along the river. After walking for quite some time I found a nice swampy clearing. Didn't see much for sign but I figured with how soggy the area was that wasn't much of a surprise, that and deer numbers by us were pretty low. After getting set up I settled in for the evening. One odd thing that stuck out was an old light blue colored chest freezer laying in the middle of the swamp. When I saw that I figured maybe I'd get lucky and bump into a trail nearby on my way out to make it easier to get back to camp. As it drew closer to dusk I realized that not only had I not seen any deer, I hadn't seen a single living creature all night. Our area is usually overrun with squirrels and other small game but I hadn't so much as heard one scurrying around the trees, or even watched a bird fly by for that matter. I realized that right around the same time a very eerie feeling started to creep in to the back of my brain. I tried to shake it off but as it grew darker it became more difficult to ignore. It quickly became overwhelming, this feeling, almost as if I was being physically pushed out of the woods by something. It almost seems silly and ridiculous even to articulate but I was completely overcome with dread, that something out in the woods was watching me and absolutely did not want me there. Now I'm no stranger to being alone in an unknown part of the woods in the dark. Hunting has been my biggest passion since I was 14-15 years old and our usual hunts back then involved walking in any given direction in uncharted forest until we found a good spot, then sitting tight till pitch dark, then making your way back to the closest road in the middle of the night. Not once have I ever felt nervous about it, even when my phone(which doubled as my only compass at the time) and only flashlight died 3 miles in in pitch black. Even the time I realized a young wolf was following behind me after an evening hunt and all I had was a bow and a knife. Nothing compared to this. I'll hunt through anything, freezing rain, blistering cold, unbearable mosquitos. Not this though. Before legal shooting time ended I decided it was time to leave. I half considered just abandoning my treestand and getting the fuck out but I figured I'd never live that down and I at least had to make some attempt to pack it up and bring it with. Never before or since then have I ever felt such a feeling of panic, as if everything around me was evil. I know I sound like a lunatic right now but I honest to god felt like the devil himself was standing beside me tapping his foot, as if at any moment I was going to run out of time. I didn't even break the treestand down and pack it out, I unhooked it from the tree and dragged it behind me, fully assembled, at a damn near sprint until I was well and far away from that swamp. Then I hastily broke it down and cinched it all together with the ratchet strap, didn't even bother to tie up the ropes or anything, just left them dragging behind me. After quite some time I finally bumped into my dad on a fire trail that leads back to the highway. His first comments were "Dude what the fuck happened to your treestand" seeing the tangled up mess behind me. Then he saw my face and asked what the fuck happened to me. I told him the whole story, prefacing it with "This is going to sound insane but..." I finished the story and he definitely had a look on his face that implied he thought I was insane until I said "And one more really weird thing, way back in that swamp, which best I can figure is way the fuck out in the middle of nowhere, there's a damn full size light blue chest freezer that looks like it got dumped back there years ago" His look of humor quickly faded to a look of concern, even fear. Took him a minute to get the words out but his only comment after that was "remember that story about the cat hung from the tree? Well unless there are two identical chest freezers dumped in the middle of the swamp back there, that spot you were in tonight is exactly the same spot where that cat was hung." |

I sat next to this rabbit for probably 10 minutes before I finally got tired of not moving, shifted a bit and he was gone Had a chipmunk run up my leg and sit on my knee, and proceed to eat his mouth full of seeds It's always surprising to me how much action is going on in the woods once you stop making noise and allow the animals to settle down |

I heard something strange about a month ago. I was walking up an old grass access road that’s in the middle of nowhere on state game land. The road is blocked off from traffic, it’s not totally abandoned because it gets mowed once or twice a year. It goes basically straight up a mountain at a very steep angle so almost no one ever walks up this thing, it’s about two miles long and literally goes to nowhere. So I decided to walk out this road one night after it gets dark. I walk all the way up, stopping every 50-100 yards to look around with my Scout TK. I’m not seeing or hearing anything the whole time, there is usually turkey, deer and other animals in the area but I’m also not use to walking in the woods after dark so I don’t think anything of it. I get to the top look around then start heading back down, I’m about 20 yards back down the road when I hear it. It’s hard to describe but it sounded like some steam powered equipment building up pressure and letting it out through a low pitch steam whistle. It would do a series of 3 or 4 in about ten seconds then nothing for 30 seconds. This went on for about 2 or 3 minutes and always sounded exactly the same. It was so close I was waiting for something to start rustling in the bushes from the direction it was coming from. I wasn’t scared in the moment because my only thought was to figure out what I was hearing. At first I thought someone in the valley had a steam powered saw or something but I realized this sounded like it was about ten yards away, just off the road in the trees. After it stopped and I was walking back down I started to get nervous because I’ve been up there dozens of times and I know there is NOTHING up there in any direction. |

Damn!!!
