This thread seems to be full of the mentality that keeps 2nd graders from drinking from the water fountain too close to the hallway door leading to the restroom. Its irrational. All fish root and eat shit to some extent. Believe it or not, the shit does not get into the meat! Really! See, there's this whole digestive process where nutrients and proteins are absorbed, where toxins are filtered and excreted, and where cells multiply and grow. Mercury is a real concern for certain fish, but I've read that the levels in Talipia are not bad. Fish is fish, and it makes for good fish tacos. I also like it glazed with soy, ginger, & rice wine over white rice. Begone with your sorcery. It eats shit therefore there is shit in the meat you stupid bastard. ![]() I understand, but I do have another question. How about the cannibal that dines on a homo? |

OK. I give up. Tilapia is indeed poop. It eats poop, and it's meat is made from poop. Dirty Jobs is the be-all-end-all authority on Tilapia Aquaculture. Obviously, the explosion in popularity here in the US is because people like to eat poop, and they truly enjoy eating fish that tastes like poop. All fish comes from China, and it's all polluted, and inspection of incoming meat by the FDA never happens. I will from now on eat only Beluga caviar, Maine lobster and wild-caught pacific salmon like the rest of the fine diners in GD. ![]() Can I come over for dinner?

You bring the lobster, I'll provide the beer. |

Quoted: Don't we have a bunch of delicate little flowers on here... I'd eat goat butthole if you soaked it in egg then drug it through cornmeal. I buy Tilapia from Costco on a weekly basis. I'm as manliest a specimen as you would hope to find. Take note. ![]() People are bitching about Omega-6 fatty acids in tilapia, yet they don't think twice about bacon or any of the other fatty things in their diet which are MUCH more detrimental than a small amount of Omega-6s in lean fish. Not to mention that people can't differentiate between the flesh of the animal and what the animal eats. Jeez... |

Depends on whether they scattered the afterbirth when the cannibal was born. |

seems like this fish is on menus be it grilled, fried, baked, poached, seeviche etc... is it gutter fish or what? I'm pretty sure that I saw a National Geographic film once that showed a school of Tilapia swimming around the the backside of a hippo and chowing down on the effluence coming out of the hippo. They were really grooving on it too. hahah! yes other fish are above such things as that! An proud american trout would never dream of such a thing! How dare! |

Not as many as there were before the Winter, I saw hundreds of dead Nile Perch in Lake Hollingsworth a few weeks ago. They froze to death. Its unreal. I saw a fish kill on the beach here that made Red Tide look like nothing. Every species in the Gulf, it seemed like. |

Fancy name for Chilean sea bass. Meh in my opinion, mainly because I don't eat a lot of fish. I heard that Chilean Sea Bass is actually a salt water variety of Carp. Sea Food is pretty deceptive - most of the names they give these fish are for marketing purposes and have nothing to do with the biology of the fish itself. Would anyone eat something called 'Salt Water Carp'?

Only in GD could a topic about such a bland and innocuous fish as Tilapia raise so much rancor.
Here's a big tip for all of you: Only buy fish from someone you trust. Otherwise, you don't know what you're getting. Tilapia is bland, so it doesn't offend anyone by being "too fishy". The other point that I haven't seen mentioned is that it is a fairly firm meat that doesn't fall completely apart when you try to serve it onto a plate, so that makes it nice for a restaurant. The only reason I don't buy it anymore is because it is boring. I would MUCH rather broil some salmon or bluefish or pretty much any other fish, as the flavor will simply be more interesting. |

Get a bunch of yuppies to dish out $35 a plate for, wait for it: "Patagonian toothfish" |

I have not been fishing in the last two years and had made my mind up to get back out this year. Now I have my doubts about it. |

Here's one good thing about them on Wiki: Tilapia have very low levels of mercury as they are a fast-growing and short-lived fish that mostly eats a vegetarian diet and therefore do not accumulate mercury found in prey.[ Too bad that doesn't apply to farm raised tilapia- they eat shit from other fish. +1 bottom feeding garbage fish from Asia. I can't believe they sell that stuff in the stores for $5.99 a pound. Pure garbage. They even sell grunts and call them flannel mouth snapper - geez. |

From Wiki: Rainbow trout are predators with a varied diet, and will eat nearly anything they can grab. Their image as a selective eater is only a legend. Rainbows are not quite as piscivorous or aggressive as brown trout or lake trout (char). Young rainbows survive on insects, fish eggs, smaller fish (up to 1/3 of their length), along with crayfish and other crustaceans. As they grow, though, the proportion of fish increases in most all populations. Some lake dwelling lines may become planktonic feeders. While in flowing waters populated with salmon, trout eat varied fish eggs, including salmon, cutthroat trout, as well as the eggs of other rainbow trout, alevin, fry, smolt and even salmon carcasses. I see nothing about trout feeding on shit. |

. Not to mention that people can't differentiate between the flesh of the animal and what the animal eats. Jeez... Animals tend to take on a flavor somewhat similar to what they eat. eats shit, tastes like shit. That's why farmed salmon is lousy. They eat fish food and that's what the flavor makes me think of. Eat 3 catfish-farm raised, wild lake caught and wild river caught. I'll eat American farmed catfish when I have to, lake caught when I catch it and will drive a long way to eat river catfish. Since the undesirable stuff tends to dgo with the current in a river, catfish by necessity are more predatory and less scavenger than lake catfish(at least in a clean river). They taste better. |
