What gun were you most excited to try or buy that turned out to be a big disappointment?
I think for me it was a Kimber Pro-Carry 9mm I bought in 2007. I thought I was going to love that thing, and it ended up being very unreliable. Sold it within a couple years. |
S&W model 39 I bought back around '84. Its best use would have been as a club.
Around 1997 or so, I bought a brand new Colt 1991A1 Stainless.
It was a completely unreliable piece of shit. It was unlikely to even get through a single magazine without a jam. Without a doubt the least reliable firearm I have ever owned. |
Glock. Specifically the Glock 22. One of the most uncomfortable pistols I've ever fired. It had all the ergonomics of a 2x4. I liked everything else about it; caliber, size, light rail, night sights, price. It had a lot going for it on paper, in hand it was a solid meh. Traded it off and never looked back.
Tavor SAR. Not a bad gun, really, but I had lusted after one for a while. When I finally bought one and put a few hundred rounds through it, I was totally "meh".
That was a decent chunk of change for "meh". |
It's a tie between an S&W-made Walther PPK or the Mossberg Shockwave. The PPK had horrible build quality and the Shockwave shoots like a foot high at 10 yards.
Glock 42, wasn't very reliable, failures to go into battery, short stroking, light strikes. Just a bummer.
S&W 638, gun was great, I should have done more research on light weight revolvers. Not a bad gun, but a disappointing experience. |
Older satin nickel Combat Commander. Even after work it would choke on ball. Sold it and bought a Star PD that was flawless.
I recently realized I did not like the extended mag in my FN 509c. Every shot the gap between the grip and the mag extension wanted to pinch my hand.
Kimber TLE II with the external extractor. After many calls to Kimber, who’s wanted to tell me how to fix it, instead of fixing it themselves and lots of internet research I got it running. Once I knew it was reliable I sold it.
KSG....it would not eject "low brass" ammunition reliably. Additionally, I overestimated the function/usefulness of the KSG. It was slow to load and switching tubes involved activating a small switch (not something I think I could do consistently under duress). I paid $800 for mine and was glad to see it go.

Number one biggest piece of shit gun I've ever had the displeasure of owning was a Masterpiece arms MPA380 defender (or some name like that). Supposed to be a more affordable seecamp. Wouldn't fore 2 rounds in a row without jamming. Spent more time in the mail going back and forth to get "fixed" (which it never was) than in my possession. I wouldn't take a masterpiece arms anything if you gave it to me for free.
Sig 226 Sao legion. I was so excited to get it and tried everything I could to like it, but when the hammer dropped it just wasn't for me. Traded it away later. All my buddies still bitch to this day about me getting rid of it (but they were too cheap to buy it!) HK P30 LSv3. The double action trigger pull was as expected, but I hated the amount of take up on single action. LCP (original). So bad I literally gave it away for free to my cousin. |
M1a.
Loved it before I shot it. Could not be more disappointed. Just an awkward heavy gun. |
There have been a number over the years.
Spas 12 maybe. It’s a shotgun and it’s heavy. HK 91. Just never fit me right or felt right no matter what. |
Glocks, terrible ergonomics. And a browning high power in .40, terribly inaccurate. Ruger mini thirty, just failed in every category. Grand, I know it's a classic favorite, but every one I ever tried to like, just couldn't.
Colt Gunsite Pistol. That gun couldn't make it through two consecutive mags without a stoppage.
Glocks don't count because they were never made for Americans with strong forearms
CETME was my most disappointing purchase. Speed |
A S&W 645 and a TEC-9.
The Smith was an OK gun, but I was really looking for a 1911 and I just never warmed up to it. The TEC-9 got through one magazine without any failures, and then every other round was a random fuckup. Took it to a gunsmith and he laughed at me, albeit kindly. ETA: Quoted: Sig Mosquito. View Quote Totally forgot about this one. Still in the back of the “unused” safe. Bought it for my daughter when she was thirteen and it was just a horrid jam-o-matic. Don’t think it’s been fired since…2009? |
Tie between the AR-7 and a NAA mini revolver.
I supposedly had one of the "good" AR-7s but it shot minute of barn door. I got the NAA for low-weight daypack carry. The NAA is beautifully crafted but pretty awkward for actual carry and a LCP or P3AT blow it out of the water for practical use. 3rd place, Beretta Nano. |
DSA SA58 FAL and Krebs Custom Saiga AK that were garbage from new. The DSA was returned for a 13+ pound trigger, frame lock kept popping loose while shooting, and unreliable feeding and extraction. DSA said the trigger pull weight was within spec and wouldn't fix it unless I paid them to do so. The Krebs wouldn't reliably feed and extract and was replaced with a new rifle.

I bought a Kimber Pro Carry II that would often fail to go into battery due to the type II safety. I sent it back to Kimber but they returned it saying there was no issue. I fixed it myself by polishing the firing pin block plunger and altering the spring. I traded it shortly thereafter.

1994 ish Marlin 357 lever action rifle. Beautiful gun, wood to metal fit and metal finish was absolutely spot on. Don't remember whether it had the Ballard or Micro-groove rifling at the moment.
Been handloading since 1980 so have I good background there. I tried around 30 different loads combos and never could get it to group worth a damn. Jacketed bullets, med/hard cast bullets with and without gas checks, fast powders, slow powders, all of it. Had several extensive logs on all that I tried. Those loads shot well in other guns. Best that rifle would do was 4-5 inches at 50 yards, from sandbags, with iron sights and a 4 power Weaver. Might have been ok for some but It was not acceptable to me. Sold it and moved on. Would love to have another one to go with my revolvers but not at the prices they seem to be going for. Maybe I'll stumble across one at a show, or maybe someone has one to trade............... off to the EE to see what I can find. |

H&K P7.
Way over rated, one of those that has a cool factor but really isn’t all that great. Squeeze cocking just didn’t do anything for me and in fact made it a hassle to shoot accurately. I guess if you normally have a death grip it’s fine. |
FNX Tactical 45
Purchased it and took it to the range the next day. 2-300 rounds. Just didn’t perform the way I’d hoped. Traded it back the following week. Well built, reliable, accurate.... just not for me. I can’t warm up to any traditional DA/SA guns anymore. |
Sig P220 - something I wanted to love, but it’s awful, huge and not accurate.

Finicky bitch and then crush block shattered. Only one supplier of parts in the US at that time... great....fts. Sig Mosquito too! Only ran in high dollar CCI... Love the 91's though... |

Mossberg 835. Plagued with light primer strikes.
I would get up at the ass crack of dawn and get set up where the turkeys were the evening before. Or maybe have to run three or four ridges over because they busted the night before and moved locations. Make my best ready to breed hen sounds which I'm convinced sounded like Bella Hadid and Margot Robbie getting it on to a tom turkey. Only to have this piece of shit go CLICK instead of BANG on a 3-1/2" Federal Premium full of whoop ass. In my disgust, I sold the hunk of junk and you would think this is where the story ends. No. This gun was given to me as a gift from my then girlfriend, who is now my beautiful wife of 22 years. Immediately after selling it I had pangs of guilt and remorse. So what did I do? I bought the victim, I mean the new owner, a brand new 835 Mossberg and offered him cash to trade me back for my old gun. He traded with no boot and I still have this blursed 835. The thing is, he was like me in that he couldn't miss clays with that 835. I swear this damned thing will bust clays like a fine O/U if it will fire. |

Their customer. service is also terrible. |
Kimber Eclipse ultra carry 2 back around 2005-2006. Jam-o-matic.....on standard ball ammo
Then a few years ago I bought a Smith 642. No malfunctions but couldn't hit the side of a barn with it |
Bought a new .32 acp interarms stainless PPK. Had issues feeding but no issue biting the web of my hand. Very heavy DA trigger as well. Traded it for a Glock 26 which I love.
Runner-up in this category is the SIG320.
I was the first kid on my block to get a 320 and she was mint. Compact frame, Full FDE with night sights from Buds. 800 rounds later I just couldn't work through the weird recoil impulse that seemed to make the gun jump straight up. So I traded it for another Gen4 Glock 19. Three months later I asked the guy how he liked it and he had already traded it for a Glock 19. |
Glock 44. Bought it for my son when he turned 9. We both hate it. Aftermarket mags are a bitch to load also.
Full Auto Kris’s Vectors.
Always run like dog shit in my experience. Also, that FCG is basically a clock. |
Masada. Newer guys wouldn't believe all the pants-jizzing that went on over that thing. Conversion AK lowers! $1,500 MSRP!
