I am not up to speed on how the Ghurka's Kukri's are "given" out, I'd refer this to my friend ANdy who is WAY more up to speed on British Military matters.

Obviously, if your a Gurkha you get an issue one… but for the rest of us, you can buy the real deal.

just a hunch.

If they were SAS, there faces would be blacked out.  There was Ghurka troop along with Harry's unit, he didn't need SAS.  There are no finer nor tougher mountain troops than Ghurka's, the Ghurka's probably pray every night that the Taliban would show their faces so they could lop off Hadji heads.

It's a myth as the Ghurkas use the Kukri as a camp ax and general cutting tool.

They always do compared to what the US .mil is used to.  They rarely if ever wear a cover when outdoors, they wear whatever they want when in the field, don't even have PT gear (maybe they do back in garrison, I've never seen any).  Our uniform standards (among other things) tend to be a heck of a lot tighter.  If you'd seen any of the many specials on them in Afghanistan (they are on a lot on Sky and BBC here) you'd really be shocked.  I guess it's results that matter and there is no doubting they are a good fighting force, but they do look sloppy (and their interpersonal relations are pretty undisciplined as well) when compared to US forces.

Which is the issued style? Or do the Gurkhas get to pick the particular style? The one listed on the site as "the official" (thanks for the link) doesn't appear to be the one in the earlier photo of the Gurkha sharpening his kukri.

The whole Gurkha/Kukri story is simply bad ass.

That's a pretty bold statement.

That man put his ass in harm's way when he could have spent the rest of his life in luxury, never lifting a finger to do anything productive.  He went in a few years from a screwup spoiled teenager to a commissioned officer in a front line combat unit, by choice.

Many others could learn from his example.

Right.  It is much more important to look the standard than it is to perform the standard.  The U.S. Army is very much behind the ball in this regard. I'm not saying you should have hair to your ass, but come on.  I once got asked why I was'nt clean shaven at a DEFAC at camp Speicher.  I replied that my squad just returned from an escort mission that lasted  29 hours,  and the ass replied that I should have shaved before entering the DEFAC.  Now mind you nobody in my squad got to shave, but I was singled out because I'm a hairy bastard.  My shit grows quick.    I could tell by the guys uniform that he was rarely if not ever outside the fence, but GODDAMN he sure LOOKED like a soldier.

Someone give me an Amen.

Shaving is important in the field because of the threat of chemical/biological attacks.  The gas masks need a tight seal against your face to prevent any of the gases from entering.  An unshaven face can prevent that, leaving small voids between the skin and the gas mask.  Thats why the Soldiers and Mariners were constantly shaving on the drive up to Baghdad, especially the closer they got.

Now, the threat is reduced, but there is a place for shaving on the battlefield.

Cool and casual in Helmand…

A member of Delta Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines, at Gibraltar Forward Operating Base in the heart of the 'Green Zone' in the Upper Gereshk Valley, Northern Helmand, uses the open air ablutions

Members of Delta Company provide security for a 'MEDCAP' Patrol around Northern Helmand giving locals medical and dental care as well as providing cold weather stores after some of the worst rainfall Helmand has seen in years

Royal Marine Armourer Corporal Denny Gildea, aged 35 from Halifax, hand washes his clothes in a minimal amount of water as there is no local water supply

Fuck!

Royal Marines from Mortar Troop fill sandbags at Inkerman Forward Operating Base in Northern Helmand, Afganistan

Members of Mortar and Recce Troops enjoy a game of poker at Kajaki, Northern Helmand during some time off

Members of Mortar Troop at Gibraltar Forward Operating Base spend their leisure time playing a game of cricket

Same shit happened to me all the time.

I was once escorted out of the PX by an O-2 because I smelled.

I hadn't seen the inside of the wire since the day before, but hey.

It didn't register with the O-2 that I was buying shampoo at the PX.

I've had two successful pulls on an M41 gas mask tester while wearing an M40 mask over a 3/4"+ beard.

I have gotten a good seal with a full beard.  What does every other nations force do in the event of a chemical or biological attack. Hurry up and Shave?  The no good seal is a myth.  Perhaps true with old relics, but not with todays material.

Since the day he was born, being commissioned as an officer was his path in life, baring medical disqualification.  Notice that his older brother William also holds a commission in the Army (its notable that he graduated Sandhurst 6mo behind Harry because he completed his bachelors degree before entering, Harry did not), and is currently attached to the RAF for pilot training, he'll soon be attached to the Royal Navy and serve aboard a destroyer or frigate.

You might get a good seal in lab conditions, but in the real world you cant be assured of it.  I sport a short beard as often as I can, but I'm still required to shave whenever I'm sent TDY to facilities that require promasks.

While reading the Wikipedia entry on Vito's mentioned pilot, I came across the following:

1 June - C-130 Hercules: Number 801 Squadron CAP (Lt. N. Ward and Lt. S. Thomas) destroyed an Argentine C-130 Hercules approximately 93 kilometers north of Pebble Island. Ward's first AIM-9L Sidewinder missile fell short of the C-130, but the second started a fire between the port engines. Ward then fired 240 rounds of 30mm, which broke off the wing of the enemy aircraft, sending it crashing into the sea and killing the 7 crew members. This particular C-130 is believed to have been trying to repeat a bombing attempt made by another C-130 the previous day, when an Argentine C-130 attacked a British tanker well north of the total exclusion zone. The Argentinians had simply pushed bombs out of the back of the aircraft as they over flew the ship. One bomb struck the ship, but bounced off to no effect.
Sounds like epic fail.

i hate that word, the "standard."

the Army uses it as a crutch. "standards" are to be used as GUIDES, they're not the gospel.
