I remember the road trips in the 1976 Lincoln Town Car being nice.
The road trips in the Celica sucked. |

1971 Dodge Dart in 1996. My first car.
Burned to the ground the first time I drove it. |

Last big car was a 77 fury like above . I've had four different Lincolns that were all very enjoyable to cruise , the 73 coupe was my favorite to cruise in

1973 Grand Prix - I got it from my mom in 1979 after my 69 Mustang Mach 1 fastback crackdd the inner subframe.

View Quote My sister had one in college (1980-84). May be a land yacht now but it wasn't back then. It was then considered a midsized car. Now two years ago I saw a true land yacht. Was at the gas station when a mid70's Buick Vista Cruiser in mint condition pulled up. A great big 9 passenger, full sized station wagon. Man was it huge. What a treat to see such a beast again. |

My parents 1977 Monte Carlo back around 2003-2004. I used to drive it to college every once in a while and would get some good comments from people on it. It had the perfect ride for a car that I've never known since.

Learned to drive with a 76 Cadillac sedan de ville.
Owned a 76 olds ninety eight when I was old enough. |

1977 Lincoln 4 door. Maroon paint and leather interior. 460 under the ridiculously long hood. Most comfortable car I ever owned, but also worst mpg of any car I ever owned. Had hydroboost brakes (power steering pump provided the boost for the brakes, instead of vacuum boost), and having to repeatedly replace parts on that was what finally caused me to junk it.
Around 18 years ago, I drove it down the Natchez Trace from Nashville to just inside Mississippi and back, and took a trip or two to Chattanooga. |

1970 Olds Cutlass.
Why was it my last cruse? Because that was the day that hulking piece of shit caught fire........For the fourth time. |
|
1970 Dodge Polara w/318
Drove from Paradise Ca. to Rawlins, Wy. then to Tucumcari, NM. This was in 1984 and was an absolute blast.

my mother and father chauffeured me to all my shooting competitions all over America in the late 70's and early 80's in a Malibu Classic Station Wagon. it was a beast. My dad coached baseball and a lot of the kids did have rides and in a small town back then it was an every day occurrence to have to go and pick up half the team for practice and games. That wagon got a workout every week.

My dad had a 1976 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon..........that thing was a land yacht extraordinare

Land yacht story for laughs.
1978 at Spring break from Northern Michigan University. I had been driving stick shift cars since I was 15. I hitched a ride downstate to Troll Land with a classmate who had a 1976 Monte Carlo. Auto, with the shifter in the center console and a big 10" wide POWER DISC BRAKE pedal. We just rolled out of Shingleton after a gas stop. He settled in to the passenger seat for some sleep as I drove to the Seney stretch. Got up to speed and unconsciously stomped on the "clutch" and reached for the shifter to shift into fourth. Damn near put us both through the windshield. Them GM cars could stop on a dime. |

Best friend in HS drove a 79 sedan de ville
Many a road trip back in the day. Thank God gas was cheap. |

But wow could it suck the gas down, thank goodness it was only .70 cents back then . I think on a good day it got 12mpg. Still it had a better ride than most luxury cars today. Mine had a towing package and was faster off the line than most of the common sports cars of the era. |

Two or three times a year I pull out my '77 Mercury Marquis, 2 door, yellow & gold.
Got it years ago for $200 before it got weird looks. Rated at a whopping 10.4 MPG, I don't go too far with it. One of a few good stories...some kids informed me I had a large car. Another time I pulled into a parking space and a lady in the next car almost broke her neck looking for the other end of it. I did upgrade it from an 8 track to casette. |

The thing had seating for like 9 people and was bigger than a Surburban. I remember when the tires were out of balance, you'd get a shimmy that would at times want to throw you off the road. never knew when it was going to happen. We had a few close ones |

The last land yaht road trip was in 1970. My dad moved us from Greenbrier, VA to Ft Leavenworth, KS in a 1967 impala. It was yellowish. The trunk was packed. My brother and I shared the back seat with our pillows and the hotly contested DMZ between us. My mom was buried in maps and spent the entire trip with our GSD we got in Germany. That dog was the best ever. She tried to eat every gas station attendant and toll booth operator. That was exciting. The best part of the car was laying on the back seat deck and looking up at the stars while driving.

Ask any Jeep owner That same friend I described above with the '72 LTD had a 73 Travelall also. He is a primo body/paint man with real skill. He did a custom job on his "irrational" as he called it. Beautiful cream & burgundy paint with custom interior. Modern fuel injection driveline with all the comforts. ETA: Probably the last ride in a land yacht was a summer afternoon and evening spent driving around in my friend's 1970s Cadillac. I was home from college and I got together with my buddy driving around, drinking beer, listening to music and . . . maybe . . . enjoying an alternative tobacco-like product. But that was a long time ago. So long ago, that we didn't even wear seat belts . . . . . . gas was probably 70 cents a gallon then. |

Chrysler stretched the K car into an "executive sedan". Ive only seen pictures but the concept and execution are so awful that the idea of doing a roadtrip across America in one is a dream of mine. The blue velour interior is like a rolling whorehouse of vulgarity.
