Jeep TJ or Toyota Tacoma?

Not necessarily with these exact set ups, just in general.  Considering vehicle size and abilities what is the better choice?

Of the two I'd go Tacoma, but I'd actually want a duramax swapped suburban.

The choices are between a TJ and a modern Tacoma.

Gladiator but that Taco is sexy AF in that setup.

Where am I overlanding?

US?  The Toyota is going to be a better vehicle for the thousands of highway miles I'll be doing before I ever leave pavement.

In general, the Toyota is going to be able to carry more useless shit that looks good on Instagram than the Jeep.

Look at what vehicles are used by people who do overlanding because they actually need to.  It's not SWB 2-door's with no storage capacity.

Overlanding implies "far away" to me, so Toyota, 100%.

Taco is probably more comfortable to sleep in as is. Surely there is bound to be a time when you aren't going to be able to or want to set up that tent on the TJ

Toyota for sure.

I'd rather take the TJ.
Its a Jeep thang ya know.

Location is Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  It would be a weekend warrior type of Overlanding.  Two nights max.

Between those two, definitely the Tacoma, and I own a jeep, lol. If I had my choice probably a Sportsmobile.

LJ is what you seek, not a run-of-the-mill TJ.

The seats recline and with them all the way back, you can sleep in them comfortably. BTDT. Helps to have a hardtop as well.

JMHO, YMMV.

That’s no kind of choice.   But, if one has to chose, then Tacoma.    Modern Jeeps were purposely designed to have terrible forward visibility and ergonomics, while achieving limited interior space in a midsize vehicle.
At least in the Tacoma, you have a bed to work with.

The pics you posted aren’t Overlanding rigs.   They’re just cars with tents on the roof, for people afraid to sleep on the ground.

Toyota for me.  The reliability is unsurpassed. We currently drive a 4R, Tacoma, and F150.  My brother has a jeep.  He enjoys working on his vehicles.  I do not.

The tacoma.

Jeeps are for going to the mall and hanging rubber duckies on.

I hate IFS, but id still have to bote Tacoma. It just gives you much more room. TJs are pretty damn compact.

Depends.

How do you define *overlanding*?

Can you live without a skottle?

Well, I own a 3rd gen Tacoma and I have owned a TJ, and while the TJ was fun and surprisingly reliable, it was not anything I wanted to spend any amount of time in outside of the actual fun stuff off road.  I doubt there's much that TJ could have gotten through that this Tacoma could not, unless it just required a tighter turn radius, and the Tacoma handles better on the road, is far more comfortable and has far more cargo room.

I really considered the TJ a street legal side by side UTV.

ETA: I loathe all things Dodge, because with only one exception, every Dodge product I've ever owned or that my friends/family have owned has been a steaming pile of shit.  The TJ was the exception.  If it hadn't rusted away I would still have it.  But still choose the Tacoma for this.

I camp out of a Jeep LJ and I would vote Tacoma. Even with the extra room it is really cramped in the LJ...

Tacoma. Our oldest has a newer Jeep, and it's fun off road, but on the highway rides worse and is noisier than my 1990 Toyota pickup.

Based on the information, I vote for Tacoma.  My gen3 Tacoma does well offroad, but a TJ is better for pure 4wheeling, as long as it is dependable.

But, it really depends on what type of adventures you want to do.
