My grandma always used to feed them to us. Havent had them in a long time. I think i should get a pack next time at the store for me and the kids...

I like the fresh figs I pick off my tree but they put too much sugar in the newtons and ruin the flavor for me.

One of my favorites. Even though they have sugar in them they are still high in fiber, minerals, and vitamins. They even come in a whole wheat version. For D2 folk you can eat them, just control the intake. They were originally made by a bakery in 1891 in Newton, Massachusetts.

I do like them, eaten them ever since I was a kid but I don't eat them more than once or twice a year now though.

I used to until diagnosed with Celiac. A good backpacking food.

In 1985 I was in Saudi Arabia. You could buy them fresh at the local markets. These were great fresh or dry them in the oven overnight at very low heat. In the morning they were done and so fantastic you couldn't believe the difference in flavor. I spoiled my tastebuds.

They're part of my shooting match ritual, going back 25 years or more.
Every year at Camp Perry my dad and I eat fig newtons and cheese/PB sandwich crackers. I very rarely will grab them during the rest of the year. I ate some 2 year old ones once...they were fine. |

I love them! Always a toss up between an Oreo dipped in whole milk, or the Newtons with a glass of milk....

View Quote @Skydivesnake IIRC the OG Fig Newtons that were posted earlier in the thread were the winner. Nabisco has changed the packaging size in the years since then. They are now smaller. Go figure. There were numerous members who shared a love for the strawberry, Blueberry, and Apple. I like the original. |

used to eat sweets and junk food like that 30lbs ago. Now I'm into grapes, apples, cherries, bananas to satisfy the sweet tooth

They 'arite once in a while. Kids are hit or miss. Only buy them in the boxes of pre-packed snack size. Will pretty much eat them so long as I have a tasty beverage nearby being so dry. If you don't and try to talk within 5 minutes of eating them crumbs will inevitably shoot out of your mouth
Personally would just rather bring dried figs in the lunchbox. |

Figs are great in almost every incarnation one might imagine - fresh off the tree, frozen (like little sherbet morsels when partially thawed), baked in pies, cakes, strudel, danishes, cookies, dried, candied, bottled / canned in syrup, as / in jam and preserves, in ice cream, and in all sorts of interesting main and side-dishes. Lived in southern Louisiana for many years - had 3 trees of different varieties. Canned many quarts for winter feed, made fig jam and fig chutney and fig "leather" and dried figs, used them in cakes, cookies, desserts, and in various middle-eastern and Greek dishes. Even made some fig wine and put some in beer brews... When I was a kid in Chicago, we had a fig tree.... Every late fall, we dug it up and buried it in a pile of mulch (figs cannot take real cold winters...) and pulled it out and replanted it in the spring. Got a few pints off it each July. Newtons and faux-Newtons are favs.

View Quote Agree, either I’ve changed or they’ve changed the recipe over the years, but don’t like them as much as I did when I was younger. The Kroger store brand was my go to over the name brand. |
