They have the industry in place to make cheap small arms, there is a big demand for cheap small arms. Why retool a factory when you already have a market for what you are producing?

They would rather be feared than respected? There is value in that, you know. And vodka. Then there's vodka.

Almost any Russian I have met/ worked with are huge ego-maniacs. They think they can do no wrong and are well liked.
When people think they can do anything but wrong... they do just that. Fucking annoying |

Their drinking habits would make the Sioux say, “Damn, Ivan, why don’t you sip your vodka instead?”

They're a country full of highly intelligent people View Quote Like much of the entire world, Russia is not a highly intelligent country. It is slightly below average due to the massive purges mid-20th century, WW2, and brain-drain communism. Smart people leave Russia for the USA or Europe. Smart people do not immigrate to Russia. |

The problem with Russia is basically anyone with power has a mafia organized crime type view towards the world. Until you remove these gangster oligarchs from power, it will never change.
|
|
You do know that Soros completely tanked their banking system right as the Federation was just getting started and called himself the “real communist” because of it?
Russia has never really evolved beyond feudalism despite Catherine the Great’s endeavors and now they’ve just got an organized crime syndicate posing as a government running things. |

Russia is normal. We're the exception. Russia is a winner-take-all society, like most societies in human history. Russians understand that there is always someone wanting to take everything you have, and that there really are no rules to govern that conflict. That's how Russian business is. That's how Russian society is. So Russians assume that's how international affairs work. And they're mostly right.
In the west, we've created a unique society where the rule of law is strong enough to moderate the winner-take-all mentality. This allows for more complex economies and more egalitarian societies, but it also creates blind spots when dealing with the 90% of the world that still lives in winner-take-all societies. Oh, and at the very top? We're still a winner-take-all society. That's why the billionaires spend so much on politics. They're all trying to fend each other off. |

Russians are a nation of drunken, sodomizing thieves.
Once a century they do seem to vomit up a genius though. |

People are under the false assumption that what Russia has done (and is doing) is somehow unusual. What is unusual (unique, actually, in all of human history) is what the Western world has done, largely through the efforts and influence of one country (the US) that controlled the rebuilding of world order in the West after WW2 killed off most of the European elite and allowed the US to essentially control the structure the new elite would operate within. Now Europe is slowly growing out of the post-war order and showing the old problems they have always had, but the US influence as the Western guaranteer of peace and the GNT (Great Nuclear Truce) ensures that the US's stabilizing influence will remain for quite some time. At the same time, our cultural influence and example of a functional free republic (even now better than most of the world, despite our current issues with Leftists and ongoing coup) to countries such as those in Eastern Europe and ever further abroad (like Georgia before Russia crushed their attempt at joining the free world).
People also forget that Russia is and has always been ruled by Dictators in the Asian fashion, and is not a Western (or European) country in terms of culture or history. The Czars, Stalin (new Czar, essentially), the later USSR leaders who just tried to keep Stalin's government going while removing the obvious inefficiencies they thought they could remove without destroying the whole mess, and now the ex-KGB kleptocracy that took over after the fall of the USSR (with Putin ruling as a new Czar with better PR). If you compare Russia to China instead of Europe their actions make far more sense. TLDR: The Russians are normal. We are the weird ones. |

What exactly is it about the Russian psyche and style of leadership that leads to them consistently and repeatedly refusing to "play nice" on the world stage? When the USSR collapsed, Russia had their chance to fully shed themselves of communism by joining in the world market. They were handed that leaf and refused to take it, instead choosing to continue to bolster their economy by large-scale arms trades and shady alliances with the gangsters of the world. ...Let it be clearly understood that the Russian is a delightful person till he tucks his shirt in. As an Oriental he is charming. It is only when he insists upon being treated as the most easterly of Western peoples, instead of the most westerly of Easterns, that he becomes a racial anomaly extremely difficult to handle. The host never knows which side of his nature is going to turn up next....

The Bolshevik Revolution either killed or displaced the best Russian stocks of people.
The White Russians went down fighting or fled Russia. The Reds took over the country and its never recovered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_movement Following the military defeat of the Whites, remnants and continuations of the movement remained in several organizations, some of which only had narrow support, enduring within the wider White émigré overseas community until after the fall of Communism in the Eastern European Revolutions of 1989 and the subsequent Dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990–1991. This community-in-exile of anti-communists often divided into liberal and the more conservative segments, with some still hoping for the restoration of the Romanov dynasty. Several claimants to the empty throne emerged, like Nicholas Romanov, Prince of Russia (1924–2014) living in Italy and Prince Andrew Romanov (b. 1923) in the United States. Some exiles still hope to form a true constitutional democratic republic in Russia View Quote |

Imperial and Soviet Russia always suffered from "short man syndrome", it's ingrained in them and there is no reason to think that that has changed at this date with the Russian Federation. One only has to look at how the Tsar thought it would be a fine idea to sail their Baltic Fleet around the world (Voyage of the Damned) to get at the Japanese and were slaughtered in The Battle of Tsushima. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Mdi_Fh9_Ag View Quote The admiral in charge of that fleet had a bad habit. When he got mad he threw his binoculars overboard. The staff on the flagship knew this and stocked a reserve of 50 binoculars. They were out of binoculars before they got to Dogger Bank. And then something really nucking futz happened. |

View Quote By which I don’t mean you both don’t have a point. But for all our cold warrior paranoia, they had their own cold warriors, and they were, if anything, more paranoid. The one former Soviet officer I knew made the tinfoil hat Alex Jones types look trusting and welcoming of the US government. Their indoctrination was really, really heavy handed and effective. And I lived through the 90s. For all the openings we made between the countries, people on both sides were wary. And from ‘93 to 2000, Bill Clinton ran things, hardly the revanchist cold warriors. But the Russians were still paranoid we were trying to take over. We worried their Imperial intentions weren’t gone. Then when former Soviet Bloc countries started to join the EU and NATO, they freaked out. They still wanted a sphere of influence, didn’t like what we were doing...except the countries joining up simply didn’t want to be subject to Russia again. I remember GW had pretty good relations with Putin...but not he with us. And this neglects the influence of others. I was in Germany on a student exchange trip when the Kursk disaster went down. I was watching the news with my host mother when a Russian Admiral came out to announce their version of events. Before his mouth opened up she spit out “he’s lying!”. And she was right. Mistrust runs deep. In another timeline, where people on both sides worked to integrate Russia into the world economy, absolutely. But I’m not sure the only problem was our cold warriors. Or that Russia is, even now, willing to let Eastern Europe live free and on their own. |

You're damn right we did, and we did that because they thought they were going to still have a sphere of influence, that's not allowed. As you can see they're right back to being stupid and still exporting leftist BS, they never stopped, and they're going to keep paying until they get it. Look at how long it took the countries around them to abandon socialism, most of them still have strong socialist parties.
