Unnecessary to go with this caliber in the TC platrorm unless you really want this round. I can't imagine an extra tenth inch of case length making a big difference. .357 Max barrels can be had lightly used for $200 or less.

MGM is listing 350 Legend barrels now. Available to ship in April if you have a contender or encore. $510 after I spec'd it out (16", threaded with pic rail).
I really wish there was a company that built similar barrel and had as many options for less money. I really want a 357 or maybe 9mm barrel for my encore but they are so spendy. It's hard to spend as much as a whole gun on the barrel.

A 350 legend AR barrel should cost no more than the equivalent 9mm AR barrel. Give it some time and prices will come down.

Even with a different extension and the need for a gas port? Seems a tall order.

There was one on the EE some time back. A guy local to me sells used barrels at gnshows for 200ish for  handgun lengths. 45-70 and .444 Marlin run a bit higher. .357 Max is usually on the lower end of that here due to difficulty getting brass.

Lots of barrels on ebay too.

ETA looks like ebay prices have come up quite a hit since I looked last.

Semi's appreciate rimless. Single shots like rims just fine. No need of a TC barrel unless you already are invested in the caliber.  $500, damn prices have gone up.  I had them do a custom wildcat for me a few years ago for $225 iirc.

GunBroker usually has a good selection. Any of the oddball stuff is usually pretty cheap. Mike Bellm will rechamber a 357 to Max for $90, so that's another option.

I guess I was just thinking of the availability of a wide variety of factory ammo with the new cartridge. I had thought about getting a Max and shooting 38/357 loaded with ultra heavies, but I hear they don't like that much.

lol finding a 357 barrel is next to impossible so the rechamber option doesn’t really help. I don’t really care about the Max anyway. I haven’t seen a 357 barrel on gunbroker in a long time. Need to renew my auto searches. If you have a contender you can find them no problem.

With the straight wall cartridge law changes for deer hunting everything dried right up. We would have straight wall lever guns that sat for months before selling now sell in days.
I'm surprised TC hasn't stepped up offerings for the .357/.44 sales happening right now.

This is what I would do. Contender appropriate cartridge? Contender frame and cheaper barrels. Whole gun for 450 in my area.

I do want a 15 inch Encore in .30-06 or .308 though.

.350 Legend seems to be the answer for those who want .35 rem(ish) performance from an AR platform or small bolt action.

They have a couple of very promising cartridges at MDWS in the works right now.

The 6.5 Wolverine they are working on is .260 / 6.5 CM performance in a small frame AR.

The problem with the AR is we are hamstrung by the length of the magazine.

Apparently CMMG is listing their Barrels for $200 and the 5 or 10 round mags they're making for the cartridge will be $18.  I'm guessing this is subject to change initially.  I'm fairly new to the AR platform but this round is what got me really excited about it.

Thank God CMMG decided to thread the barrels in a "normal" thread and not 1/2-32 or 1/2-36 9mm threads. Makes getting or modifying existing muzzle devices much easier.

I'll just need another Griffin Minimalist taper mount brake for 5.56 in 1/2-28 and bore it out for 9mm like I did with my first AR-9 pistol. Not sure if their 1/2-28 9mm Hammer Comp taper mount would fit in my Form 1 can's blast baffle, but that would be even easier.

Their barrel is even nitrided

For $200, I'm in on the first batch.

Depends on bullet weight & length. Winchester will offer a 265 grain subsonic round.  300 grains is not unreasonable for a 357/358 bullet weight if running subs.
A 1:12 would be ok for the 265, a 1:10 would be what I would look for if I go for this cartridge.

It remains to be seen if 1:16 is fast enough for the Winchester factory 265gr subs.

But, I doubt Winchester dun goofed on it's recommended twist. 265gr subsonic ammo was announced at launch, and 1:16 is the recommended OEM twist (https://winchester.com/350-legend/faq).

With the subs being a 75-100 yard round max, 1:16 may provide enough stability. I played around with Bergers twist stability calculator using 1.2-1.35 as reasonable mix/max length bookends, they all qualified as "marginal stability" but not "unstable". So maybe it will be fine.

I agree 1:12 would be better, or at least 1:14 - maybe I'll wait for X-Caliber to have 350 Legend as an option so I can spec that on a custom barrel.

UPDATE - I reached out to X-Caliber barrels and asked. They will be offering 350 Legend in their custom barrel configurator, they will be offering both 1:10 (WINNAR!) and 1:16 twist, and expect to have it available within about a month.

FYI - X-Caliber has added 350 Legend to their custom AR barrel ordering page.

I'm holding off to determine optimum short barrel length for super and subsonic loads with common powders and accompanying ideal gas system length - might do some reading over on the MDWS forums to see how they faired with the 357AR.

Unless @MDWS wants to chime in and make it easy?

Aerodynamic stability at range is not what determines what happens a few inches from the muzzle. Excessive spin is probably more likely to create a baffle strike than inadequate twist rate.

Read through this thread and the links within, and you'll understand why.

https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/-ARCHIVED-THREAD-Bullets-accurate-at-600yd-but-not-100yd-/5-1578254/?page=1

Chamber and throat design and concentricity has a much greater impact on the potential for a baffle strike than twist rate. Excessive twist does nothing good for yaw or nutation less than 12 inches from the muzzle.

Still calling BS.
I shoot 55 grain 223 thru my silencer from a 1:7 twist no baffle strikes, way over stabilized. Same for my 300 BLK, 110grain bullets in a 1:7 twist at over 2300 f/s no problems. The only time I have had a baffle hit was shooting 220 grain subs in a 1:12 twist 308, too slow of a twist.

Well X-Caliber made the gas system length discussion easy - they are only offering the 1:10 twist barrel in pistol-length gas and have the caveat that the 350 Legend requires an adjustable gas block .

X-Caliber stated they don't have any ammo for testing, so they are currently sizing the gas port large enough that it is 100% certain to function with subsonic loads (my read: overgassed) and you'll have to tune from there with the usual methods. According to their customer service - they don't disclose gas port size.

It's mostly a moot point anyways - my Quickload subsonic 350 Legend models I made up last night (using the 275gr Woodleigh Weldcore bullet as a stand-in) indicated that pistol gas was going to be required for any of the short barrels (10.3" - 12.5") to satisfy my back-of-napkin requirements of at least 12ksi at the gas port and 2-4ksi at the muzzle.

Like 300BO, designing a gas system to reliably function subsonic/unsuppressed is guaranteed to be overgassed when running supersonic/suppressed.

Have a 350 Legend reamer and gauges on the way now to find a barrel .....
